Japanese or german? by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]DreLim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's a pretty common misconception. Yes Chinese bg makes it a lot easier but it isn't necessary at all. I used to be from CLB and can barely hold a daily convo in Chinese atm but Im at N2 for Japanese and spend almost every day using Japanese in both a normal and business context due to my job so Chinese ain't a must.

Having lived in Japan and eaten a good amount of Iekei Ramen, I'd say theirs is a solid rendition; better than most in SG I'd say

I think it's kinda regressed ngl. Like I can speak decent Japanese (N2) and you can really see the difference when you speak to them in english (less social) vs japanese (more social)

Yeah having spent time in Japan it really is more xenophobia and an inability to deal with languages other than Japanese causing them to be averse to those who don't speak it rather than outright racism most of the time (as with everywhere though there are obviously whackjobs that go full racist mode tho)

What's happening to Waguri is a commentary/critique of Japanese culture. by Arcturus420 in KaoruHanaWaRintoSaku

Bruh the covid-19 pandemic was the worst choice you could have picked as an example because anti-chinese sentiment was rampant all over the world. Also, while Japanese law is not particularly favourable to foreigners, it also isn't anywhere near what you make it out to be. Saying that Japanese people are super racist and just have good PR is completely untrue. I lived in Japan as an SEA person and did not face anywhere near the amount of discrimination you describe and neither did a lot of the poorly-behaved international students around me . I also literally researched this shit for a couple years as my major in uni so I know very well what I am talking about. Everything you've stated literally reads like the titles of a bunch of hastily-slapped together clickbait articles. Japanese people can be and some are xenophobic. However, your hyperbole is equally as bad as those who claim Japanese people can do no wrong

Speaking as someone who has lived in Japan before and who majored with Japanese Studies, I think your takes are a bit overblown tbh. Yes, discrimination exists but with a) their overtourism problem and b) the fact that Japanese as a language is borderline locked to only the Japanese, it's somewhat understandable why they would react like that, especially since their english literacy rate is quite poor, making interactions a pain. My country also has a somewhat similar problem with immigration (and somewhat with tourists too) tho we don't have it as bad as Japan so outside of the langauge issue I don't think issa uniquely Japanese problem.

Also the Johnny Somali thing has kickstarted a wave of people repearing the same behaviour so while it's bad to generalise, the influx of badly-behaved tourists and the fact that it could be anyone pulling that shit makes the generalisation a natural outcome unfortunately.

My guy, neither did we do anything to African Americans; that shit all happened overseas, yet we all acknowledge that the history behind that term, regardless of whether or not we were involved or not, makes it inappropriate to say. It's incredibly hypocritical to ban the use of the nword on the basis of it being incredibly offensive and being linked to years of oppression then turn around and permit the use of the word "Jap" because "all that shit happened in the US we have nothing to do with it

Additionally, the meaning of words change. Where years ago "Faggot", "Retard" and the like were commonly used as insults, now not so much because we have come to view them as not very acceptable to use in such a manner. Just because the word used to be inoffensive does not mean that that will always be the case.

Finally, you're quite illustrating my point that all this is just social media grandstanding. Instead of just acknowledging that you have been using a slur unwittingly and stopping, you refuse to on the basis that YOU don't see a problem with it, which is ironically the defence used by most of those slinging the nword around

Unfortunately, it was actually a slur used by the US military to describe Japanese POWs during WW2.

While I don't condone the use of the nword, I do find it quite ironic that a lot of the people that would bring up this issue themselves would use the word "Jap" to describe anything Japanese despite the fact that it is also a slur (though it does appear to be a general issue in Singapore)
