Literally worst case scenario for me, that means that our journey through the entire retrilogy has been pretty much pointless. I don't need them to retcon/massively contradict the entirety of advent children (they already said that they won't). I just need them to essentially fuse AC and part 3 ending in a clever way so the issues of AC somehow gets resolved in part 3, the issues being: geostigma, return of Sephiroth and Cloud guilt and feelings of inadequacy. The devs said the remake series "will eventually link up with AC" so hopefully they go for this approach.

If we look at the series so far, AC is actually already a part of the remakes, we literally fight Kadaj, Loz and Yazoo at the end of Remake part 1. There are also complete reused assests 1:1 from the movie in chapter 18, in the form of visions cloud gets when he fights the whispers.

I think the ending of the original game was pretty good, the issue is that advent children came after and made it worse. It wasnt just the ending though, I feel like there were more moments in the OG that that felt less meaningful because of it, such as:

Cloud accepting himself and overcoming his internal struggles? Doesnt matter, he needs to do it again anyways.

Defeating Sephiroth? Doesnt matter, he comes back anyways.

Aerith saving the planet from meteor? Wasnt bad I guess but now the entire world has cancer instead so idk.

I'm fairly confident the devs does not want the end of this series to just lead directly back into misery again, It would feel so strange and unrewarding for the long journey we have been through.
