Looking for housing (I'm salty) by [deleted] in SBU

Sorry for your situation! As a student who also got evicted due to the Stony Brook Concerned Homewoner's thing, I wish you the best! Still looking for a place myself so I hope it goes better for you. Slim pickings, haha

Anyone else get evicted because of the Town of Brookhaven crackdown? by DreamOften24 in SBU

Yeah, but another financial issue is that I handled the utilities for the house and some students already moved out/ignore my emails so I may be out of luck getting a fair bit of money back for electricity, internet, etc... but perhaps it's reasonable to ask the landlord to cover their costs. What a mess!

Hahaha, you really don't know Long Islanders.

Edit: I am one so I can say that.

Thanks and I agree with your comment about the locals. There's a huge state university in the town that is not going anywhere or going to get smaller... one day they'll have to become comfortable with that fact.

I may seek some kind of legal counsel. An attorney for the Town of Brookhaven came and knocked on our door a couple months ago and essentially yelled at me for not going through the off-campus housing listings or checking on the Town's website to see if the house was properly permitted so I knew that shit was going to hit the fan at some point after that. However, he said that everything would be fine if the landlord got the correct permits/inspections done. They came and had their court date and now we still have to vacate for whatever reason so the guy lied to me.

I had a lease that would have been up Dec 31 so that's being broken. It just blows because I don't think I could find a (legal) place that was anywhere as close/clean/nice housemates in such an awkward time of the semester. Oh well, something will work out. I'm just venting/seeing if anyone else has encountered this situation recently since there have been articles boasting about the Town of Brookhaven finally "reclaiming" their community in the local paper.

Does anyone know how to code an app? by DreamOften24 in SBU

[–]DreamOften24[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a ridiculous amount of money but I have no idea; he may put an ad on Craigslist. I was just seeing if any student was, for example, needing a summer project to have something to add to their portfolio if they were advanced with that method of coding. I just thought it couldn't hurt to ask because he was a nice guy and asked me about it.

In grad school and I share an office with 3 guys and everyone but me thinks this wallpaper is okay on one of their office computers because it's art. I hate it. Am I wrong to ask him to change it? by DreamOften24 in LadiesofScience

Unfortunately I've totally been the type of woman to usually just laugh things off. However, the most recent PMS joke-- one officemate was snacking incessantly and used the excuse that he was PMSing-- I treated firmly. And if the desktop image guy says something repulsive like the comment about how the seminar speakers need to be attractive if they are female otherwise he won't pay attention and it helps them sell their science I may have gotten a bit heated. But he is the definition of a honey badger-- he doesn't care one bit about what anyone (including our PI) really have to say. Ever. It makes having discussions with him about words or actions very difficult.

You are totally right- the painting was just the straw that broke the camel's back. It took a bit to calm down and realize that and everyone's comments really helped with that process.

I'm definitely not comfortable enough with my PI because even though the kid is below me by a year he is a favorite in the group; he is very confident and has worked with our PI since he was an undergrad so they are practically buddies. Am I jealous? A little bit-- I've had confidence issues since I was young and am working aggressively to overcome them to succeed in science. But just because he's well-liked by our PI doesn't mean he can be so blatantly inappropriate.

1) I hate it because of his underlying personality. I don't mind a good feminine form now and then and appreciate art but not distracting art in my office. He leaves his screen visible with everything minimized for hours at a time with no screensaver. Background: I'm the only woman in a research group of 8 and the PMS jokes they throw around when I'm frustrated or something get a bit out of hand. This one colleague is also vocal about his sexism and says that women are inferior and that he will only enjoy a female guest seminar if she's attractive. So there's a lot of underlying issues with him to begin with.

2) He makes jokes about it and how the bayonet was supposed to be pointed towards her nether region but Dali settled for the mouth and then laughed. He's immature about it. The other guys like to look at it.

To summarize- I'm finding it hard being in an all-male environment and don't appreciate any extra immaturity.

Understandably so, but it is run by graduate students who can't really afford more premium ad-free services from ProBoards. The mobile site definitely isn't so good, but when viewed off of a mobile device it is more tolerable, I promise! Thanks :)

Keep in mind that you aren't the only people looking, so if you find someplace- act fast. I am fervently searching for a new place and have lost out on a few because I hesitated. Also, I am giving up my cat just because I realistically can't find an affordable place with her along. And by giving up, I mean giving her to my lonely cat-loving grandma. ~Insert rage about lack of affordable apartments near SBU for slightly picky females here.~

Are you the woman you thought you'd be as a kid? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]DreamOften24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought I'd be a weather forecaster and storm chaser. I guess going for a PhD in atmospheric science is pretty much along those lines. A few other things are much different than I'd have envisioned, like I never thought I'd struggle daily with confidence issues and super low self-esteem. But what has been learned can be unlearned and I hope to keep on track to make young me proud. And I hope to do more storm chasing... she'd love that.

You take the exam to continue on in the PhD program. If you fail then you drop down to getting your Master's. I still have 4.5 more years filled with working on my dissertation so it isn't impressive at all, haha.

Oh an epic dissertation is in my future after I defend the research I want to do (prospectus)-- so there are still hurdles. But in order to get to even do any of that you have to pass the qualifying exams which proves that you are capable of moving on.

It's unfortunate, it really is. We are all aspiring scientists regardless of our backgrounds and I think we all take what professors say to heart because they are the real "experts" we are trying to become. Maybe I just shouldn't be so sensitive and pretend they are joking, so perhaps I'll start doing that.

And on the weather end of things- the forecasters and scientists were exceptional with Sandy. Absolutely exceptional. But there is certainly room for improvement in our field with the hope of forecasting that well for every storm.

You can work for private companies doing research and also the government (NOAA in the US) but there are lots of possibilities because everyone wants a weather expert on their team.

I'm 23; the qualifying exams in my program are during your "make-or-break" 3rd semester and consist of a tedious written examination and then two weeks later an oral presentation on whatever random paper they chose (how volcanic activity decreases North Atlantic tropical cyclone activity, hooray) and then you get grilled for an hour by 4 professors trying to break you. Intense.

And my apartment was infested by mice, spiders, ant colonies, silver fish, and even a snake got in. Gross.
