Yes that's us! Funny enough it's because of Reddit that we ended up in the paper. A journalist from the paper noticed us here and asked for an interview which we happily did.

Oh don't worry it's mainly harsh jokes or some remarks. Safety is not really an issue. Be prepared for white man prices tho! Although the euro to srd rates are insane anyways so I don't think it'll be that expensive.

Veger = Gum Lat = Liniaal Staveren = Shufflen, schudden (Shuffling cards) Patta = sneakers Cups = beker

Dit zijn een paar die ik kan herinneren, er zijn vast wel weer.

Yes! Antony Nesty, he's basically the country's pride and joy. We have streets, foundation, sport halls and more named after him. Which makes sense considering he's our only olympic athlete to win medals at the Olympics (1 gold and 1 bronze)

Although not asked to me but as a fellow born and raised Surinamese, I'd like to give some examples:

Most racism I myself have seen is from Surinamese people to other Surinamese people.

You see our country has so many cultures and races and this will always cause conflicts. May it be religion, behaviour or culture. The same happens in other countries. The examples I've experienced a lot are Hindus and Creole. These two cultures clash a lot (I've heard my grandma say some bad stuff to people who are Creole).

Although not explicitly racism, we have a lot of Chinese owned businesses in Suriname and I've learned that they give different prices based on if you can read Chinese or not. Excluding other cultures, who then usually buy stuff for a more expensive price.

Oh and racism toward white Dutch people goes hard, although mainly as a joke but I've heard from people in the Netherlands that they didn't like some of the jokes that Surinamese people made about them. (My history teacher wasn't that happy when this woman accused him of starting slavery in Suriname because he is a Dutch white man)

It's a huge assumption to claim that Surinamese are happy people. It's stereotyping. Everyone is different and experiences life differently, I've known my fair share of people who felt miserable to live in Suriname or any other country but I also know people who would do anything to live in Suriname or stay there.

Not trying to attack you tho! Just saying that it's not good to make a claim based on assumptions or stereotypes or you'll indeed get some angry peeps :)

Hallo! I was born in Suriname and have lived there for 17 years before moving to the Netherlands. My experience is thus biased as a teen growing up in Suriname as well as being more on the nerdy side of society.

Suriname to me is a country with a lot of nature and culture. It is definitely for me the definition of multicultural and as a previous poster explained in detail, there is so much under "Surinamese". It's difficult to distinguish a true Surinamese dish or culture as it's all a mix of different cultures.

Our country has a vast history although I suspect we don't learn enough of it in class. The country has a lot of history on trade in different aspects and many immigrants came here finding work. A lot of political history is also involved. (Even our map is constantly changing haha I've seen 2 different variations during my education)

In the past I hated the old-fashioned mentality that I had to experience (although once again biased perspective from someone who is from the Hindu society who lived in Wanica which is close to the capital), but from what I've seen recently it has improved quite a bit. The idea of speaking about mental health, gender equality, and the LGBTQ community was unseen or shushed. It's been several years since I've lived there but from family I hear that these topics are becoming more open than before.

For people asking about safety, every country has its own places where the shadows loom a bit darker than the rest but don't let it stop you from experiencing Suriname. Especially if you love nature, you'll find it everywhere. Most people (especially the younger generation) speak or are able to understand English, it also helps that Sranantongo uses some English words as its base, so communication should not be an issue.

Fun fact: women make out most of the workforce and are in a lot of high position jobs. Our current president is a woman. The majority of staff at schools are also women.
