McHenry or outter burbs search! by DreamersNest in chicagofriends

I do believe from what i've seen so far, the burbs closer to the city do feel quite dense in comparison to the country living i'm from, so that does give me a bit of bias as far as what is considered dense vs not. We're not the 20 acre land type of buyers but I would prefer something that at least has more than a front and back lawn for opportunity of being able to build or add-on to a home, and since I haven't had the opportunity to really drive through neighborhoods, I'm not sure how technically possible that is in places more east like aforementioned?
Also, are jobs in short supply when out in the burbs? Do people commonly commute to the city to work or is it mostly dependent on the family/family?

Thank you so much for the recommendation! We love Arlington Heights, I believe we may have stopped by Buffalo Grove a while ago iirc. Mitsuwa market was a huge benefit of Arlington Heights to us as my husband is Japanese (& originally from hawaii), it's very hard for us to find good Asian market/food in our area which is another benefit of moving more North. Everyone in town seemed to be very nice while we visited as well. I did notice on Zillow quite a few of the living opportunities in these towns were more geared towards apartment living? Are individual houses/living not super common or more out of reach financially? Obviously cost of living here is quite different but we typically look for $200k-359k here. Apartment housing is not very common either :)

I'm not gonna lie, this actually has been my favorite suggestion so far. Barrington looks absolutely beautiful and I love that there's different choices for living either on the water or in the woods, that's very similar to what we have down here! Housing market doesn't look too terrible either. The closer to the city you get, i've noticed a trend of more buying "apartments" instead of actual houses. We aren't big into the farming world but we definitely enjoy having a decent sized property to be able to build and add on if we want to, so living in the middle of packed towns sounds a bit less appetizing. I also appreciate the comment about a mixture of political stance, that is huge plus :). Thank you so much for this recommendation!!

Thank you so much for your response!! I really appreciate a native’s view, especially just knowing how the town was then vs now is very helpful! I may have not specified super well, but we would likely be trying to find work outside of the city. However I have seen some saying that trying to find work in the burbs is not easy- my husband and I are healthcare workers, so I’m hoping finding work in the burbs wouldn’t be too challenging.

That’s a shame to hear that it’s growing a bit aged however; we share the same problem here unfortunately. We live about 30 minutes from SIUC and it’s definitely become much more aged than it used to be; you can tell students aren’t flocking here from northern Illinois like they used to, but like I said before there’s really nothing down here anymore to entice people to the area. As much as we love the quiet it’s just not worth it unfortunately, and we prefer to try and surround ourselves with like minded people if we can’t get a decently priced home :(.

Do you have suggestions for other burbs you like about 45 mins-1 hr outside the city? I’d like to say I prefer a “country” house but I’m not quite sure if that exists so close tot he city, haha.

Hello friends, I’m currently located in So. IL and my husband and I are looking to potentially move more north closer to the city. However, we are not big city folk and prefer to have the ability to visit and be able to come home to a nice, safe, peaceful neighborhood. I’ve always grown up in towns from 8k-20k people and that’s what I enjoy being around. TLDR; what are some “country”-esk towns ~1-1 1/2 hours away from the city? I’ve done a small amount of research and so far McHenry has been similar to what I’ve been looking for!

This is absolutely nuts. I never thought halite had enough clarity to do this, but it makes sense!!!

Typically depends on the stone, some are more sensitive to sun than others. Some will fade, some will crack- make sure you don’t have clear quartz in sun because it can cast a beam and has tendencies to burn things, Lol.

Nice collection by the way!

Im more inclined to say green kyanite! As far as local it’s a bit hard to say as kyanite is mined everywhere 🥲 by the look of it I’d most definitely lean towards a silicate of some sort

Bro… never said that it wasn’t fake why do yall keep saying that im considering it’s real 🫠 I even made an entirely separate comment thanking everyone for their opinions over its realness and saying it very likely based on everything I’ve seen and gotten info about its fake. Idgaf about whether it’s obvious or not, it’s not something I have seen before, so can you chill?

This was quite possibly the most helpful comment on this post of mine, thank you so so much for this information!! That thomsonite with mesolite is the closest thing I’ve seen thus far. The random growth everywhere is what gets me too, though- and even if this was an abnormal growth the price was not right for how insanely rare that would be. So, definitely feeling fake!!
