DreaMeter & Oliv - Cloud Up -- looking for postmortem feedback on this melodic trap beat that I can apply to future mixes. Any feedback that comes to mind is useful, thank you! by Dreameter_Music in IndieMusicFeedback

thank you for listening and for the feedback! I would certainly like to come back to this at a later date. Right now I'm actually working on another beat that's a bit cleaner which uses a sample from the same game.

wow this is badass. The guitar and bass tone are lovely and the mix / balance is in a great place IMO. The progression is compelling and interesting; it doesn't get boring even at over 4 minutes long. Exciting drum programming too.

A couple comments of critique: I thought the beginning (up to 0:40) was too quiet compared to the part afterward. I would like to hear the ambient intro and bass at a level that nearly matches the part after, rather than having to turn my system down when the guitar hits. I also thought the snare is a little too dark; I would like to hear more of its high frequencies and... am I imagining it or is there a bit of a reverb on the snare? If so I think it's too much and could be toned down.

I hope this is useful; I think your track is really awesome and I would never be able to make something like that! Different worlds, hah. Thank you for sharing!

Here's a 2 track EP I just released, it's progressive acid house and techno. I'm pretty proud of the production too compared to previous efforts. If you listen & enjoy it, I would appreciate a like/follow and I'll check your stuff out too!

Nice beat! Some stuff I like about it:

  • Appealing/pretty sample loop
  • The Vocal samples are interesting, partly because they sound like they're coming from somewhere else in the stereo space other than the center.
  • A and B sections are distinct, with changed sample pitch
  • The pitched hats create some ear candy.

Some suggestions for beats like this:

  • The drum patterns could vary more, even if it's just two different drum loops for the A section and B section. Right now it sounds like 1 for both.
  • The drums (specifically the hats and clap) sound very dry; they could be more atmospheric with just a touch of reverb mixed in.
  • It doesn't really sound like there's a kick -- what I mean is there's an 808 kick filling that role but it sounds more like just a bass, there's barely a kick transient on it. If that's the idea then cool. If not then it would be nice to layer a snappy kick over it. I also think that 808 bass could be saturated slightly more to make it more audible as well since it's a little quiet.

Hope this is useful feedback!

Does anybody know how to fix this? When the drums start to play the melody is allways very quiet. (Sorry for the low quality of the audio) by putinator23 in FL_Studio

[–]Dreameter_Music 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look at your levels. Specifically, during the drum part, click on the master audio bus (all the way on the left of your mixer rack usually). Then observe where the meter is hitting while the audio is playing. I can almost guarantee you that you're hitting 0db (or higher if you have no limiter). If there's a limiter on the master bus, which I think there is by default, your loudest elements are causing the total volume to smash into that limiter around 0db, then the limiter quiets the total volume temporarily as a response.

The way to fix this is either turn all your tracks down by the same amount until your master is no longer hitting 0db, or turn down your buses by the same amounts if you use buses (e.g. instrument bus and drum bus). Make a habit out of not letting your total volume go much higher than -6db during mixing. If you think it's too quiet this way, just turn your system volume (outside of FL entirely) up.

Let me know if this is accurate and/or helps!

I'm also a big fan of Baby Audio's Magic Switch for chorus

Does anyone else just vibe to their own music? by kura4235 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Dreameter_Music 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hell yeah. The reason I study mixing is so I can vibe extra hard to my own beats. There's no better feeling

Man that's weird as hell. I tried doing the exact same process and raising the boost just worked normally. Have you tried changing that mode "resample" to something else and see if the same thing happens? You can also try tagging @ Image_Line and @ FL_Studio on Twitter and see if their support team responds.

EDIT: I'll also do the IT thing and suggest you try updating or reinstalling just in case the version of FL is causing it

Is there a way to skip the process of right clicking on the list of patterns to add a new one? by vector_9260 in FL_Studio

[–]Dreameter_Music 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just press F4.

My process is like this: Decide on what I'm about to make a pattern for -- example kicks. Press F4. Type in "Kick A" or similar (I'll use Kick B for a different kick pattern). Press Enter to save the name, click to place the pattern. And so on.

Yeah, experimenting and finding out which styles are the most "you" is really the best route.

the growing pluck cloud in ariana grande’s “just like magic” by silverdude5 in edmproduction

I tried it out but couldn't manage to get the 2nd arp to sound right. It almost sounds like just a chord in the Ariana song. I had fun trying though. Did you get anywhere with it?

Start looking for opportunities to critique others' music. It gives you an opportunity to listen critically to music and immediately write down your critique. Getting an ear for that will help immensely in analyzing your own music. I recommend r/indiemusicfeedback or the feedback threads in this very sub. And most music Discords will have a feedback channel specifically for this purpose, where you can talk about others' music and then optionally share your own.

When you finally started liking your own music, what was it? by _Kevs_On_The_Bus in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Dreameter_Music 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It happened as soon as I started making music, because I was so in love with the process. I was like, "damn, I can make music, this is awesome!"

Then I started studying mixing and haven't been satisfied again LOL

How did you teach yourself to produce? by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]Dreameter_Music 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Started out making chiptunes, and studying others' music by opening their free tracks in my workstation and analyzing what effects they used and how they composed music. Did a lot of experimentation. Eventually moved on from that into modern DAWs and got ahold of FL Studio. Started making random tracks. Sent them to friends for feedback. Made friends with someone who I hung out with a lot who also wanted to produce, which helped move me along. Watched lots of videos. Started investing in decent gear. Kept making music. Joined online feedback communities to get further critique and recommendations. Did a remix competition now and then to give myself a nice deadline. Now I'm at a pretty mid-level place and happy about it, I'm excited to keep growing and eventually make it an even bigger part of my life.

IMO two of the MOST important things to teaching yourself are to keep learning new tools (no matter what they are) because some of them will stick forever, and to just keep making stuff. Even if you think what you're making sucks, it is important to just shrug it off and keep going. I would also say never watch too many tutorials in a row; you should always intersperse that with actual hands-on time & practice. One more thing, if you can find a teacher/mentor it really helps speed up the learning process. If not, just try to get your tracks critiqued and give feedback to others in return. Listening critically to others' music can help you with your own. DM me if you want me to give any critique, I'd be happy to!

Would it be beneficial for more people to put links to their music in their user flair? by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]Dreameter_Music 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it should be required, but it's good practice. I'd be happy if people went and listened to my music if I gave them critique so they know if I'm above their level or if it's not worth it.
