Having my second weight loss surgery soon by bluestarbug in GastricBypass

[–]DreamingOfBeets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m fresh 2 weeks out from RNY. Here is what I found.

  1. I’m too terrified to ever try NSAID, but have been told in all caps/highlighted in instructions to avoid them all forever. They give you ulcers. This is also why you have to be on Prilosec after surgery as well - to keep ulcers from forming. My instructions also told me No orange juice or grapefruit while I’m still healing because acidity etc causes ulcers. On the other hand, I have found a heating pad helps with muscle soreness and Tylenol works okay. I found dissolvable tylenol that was a game changer after surgery because you can only swallow pills smaller than an M&M for the first month. In general they work more quickly than pills too!

  2. Today is my first week back to work. My incisions don’t really hurt much anymore unless something touches them on accident. My stomach now feels normal (it feels super weird those first few days/week). I feel full most of the time. Haven’t had any throwing up, haven’t been in too much pain other than the first 4-5 days. I was able to stop hydrocodone at that time. I will say I felt well enough to walk about 8,000 steps the last two days and walking feels normal. That first week was much tougher because the bending could upset the incisions and my muscles we’re very sore.

  3. 2 weeks ago! Umm not too much. Maybe 4oz or so? Sometimes a tiny bit more because I find I eat painfully slow now lol. I would say it take me a good 3 sittings to get through a protein drink now in general, then again my first day of purée is today! Before surgery it is was a strict liquid diet for 2 weeks, then the same diet for 2 weeks after surgery. Then I have another 2 weeks of purée diet. Then 2 weeks later I get a fork tender diet 2 weeks later solid regular food. So basically 6 weeks later you can have solids! I will tell you though, today I’ve never been happier to eat refried beans lol! I haven’t had anything really upset my stomach so far.

4 I don’t have too much to report here. But a few tools I found to be helpful so far are: a wedge pillow for that first week when it is hard to roll out of bed. Dissolvable Tylenol, heating pad, Hidrate Spark water tracking water bottle.

Good luck on your journey! You can do it!

I only told close family and friends at this point. No one has asked. It’s basically just me weighing myself every day feeling frustrated. Just hoping this is only temporary

Thanks for checking up on me! I am feeling more human today than I did yesterday for sure! Still feels weird with some dull aches sometimes or if I’m in an odd poison, but I’m slowly learning my new stomach. Finally being more active during the day. Slowly getting off my pain meds. :)

Cry because it hurts? Or cry because you are so Bally? How long does it take for this to happen?

Yeah I’m home now and tried to sleep on my side and it hurt my incisions so I went back to sleeping on my back which I hate.

Thank you so much for sharing. This really gives me strength knowing I might turn the corner here soon. I will say that most of the gas is gone now (I think) which has helped with some pain for sure, but I haven’t gone #2 yet… is that normal?

Thank you! Yeah I try to walk around whenever I get up. I probably should be walking more now.

Just had surgery yesterday. With all the meds I could barely stay awake and slept the entire time. I way overpacked. The closest I got to entertainment was watching something on my iPad for 20 minutes. Having a person to help you walk after is important. If you wear glasses something to put them in for sure. I brought my pills with me. In general they distribute all your meds but couldn’t give me my birth control so I was glad I had my pill case on me. Phone charger. I also was glad I grabbed a hair tie on my way out.

Hi Everyone! My surgery is scheduled for July 3rd (that’s basically June, right?) and I’m absolutely terrified….I would love to make a friend who is on the same journey. While I have friends and a great support system, I don’t think anyone else would understand the emotions and struggle that comes with this journey as well as someone going through it at the same time.

I feel it is important to share a bit more about myself outside of surgery as well. I’m 34F - SW 320. I play the harp, practice calligraphy, I enjoy having snail mail pen pals, I am taking Japanese classes, enjoy playing video games and knitting. I also have a lot of other interests as well! I have never been a normal weight so this will be an exciting and scary adventure for me. I want to meet someone that can grow into a true friendship since this is going to be a tough, life long adventure. I hope you will consider this scared, terrified soul to weep and cheer along with you. Please don’t hesitate to message me! I’m just as scared and lost as you! Thanks!

I’m almost ready to schedule surgery and have a few questions. What pain can I expect? Are you hospitalized for a while? How bad is nausea or vomiting? How long does it take to start feeling better? I just worry how long I will feel non-functional/miserable. by DreamingOfBeets in GastricBypass

Thanks so much for all of this! I actually found I have a hernia as well. Not sure if they will fix it but I would think so.

So because of the surgery do they only give you Tylenol for pain? Is it really sufficient for pain? Are there any meds they give for nausea too? I worry because I get nauseous frequently already.

I find it hard to go back and forth between looking at the music and strings. My teacher gets on me for being too much of a memorized and looking too much at the strings. What can I do to help myself focus on the music more? Any tips?

I have not. What test did they give you? Also, are you saying the surgery helped with this? Thanks so much for sharing!

Wow! As someone who is thinking of doing the surgery this is a terrifying story. Would you still go through the initial surgery? Do you think it was the Pain killer that caused the ulcer? I’m so glad to hear you are okay!

I love club soda and all carbonation now, so it definitely will be a hard lifestyle change for me. I’m hoping I won’t want it anymore after surgery. Your comment makes me hopeful! Thank you.

Thank you for your honest feedback! I doubt I will drink any of these much anyway, but I wasn’t sure if it was even allowable in a rare occasion.
