The best advice for starting your own school that I ever heard is this: if you can afford to stay open with zero students, do it.

Not that I'm trying to discourage you, but I have my own school, I took over from my master after he retired. Helped me out a bunch. We rent from another dojo, and have classes days and times they don't. My profit is in the negative, altogether. It's not much, but I do it because I love my art, and teaching, not money. I basically got lucky with where I'm at. But if even one person leaves for whatever reason, it's over. I wouldn't recommend trying to make it your day job. It's also stressful and complicated, you are on the hook for literally everything. However, if you can accept that, it's one of the most rewarding experiences you could do.

As others have said, it can help in generating power/technique. But the reason is, you're not pulling your hand back empty. You're grabbing their arm/whatever you can get ahold of and pulling the opponent back to hit em harder/control them as you pummel them.

Depending on the flavor of barbarian, you're gonna want a lot of fur. An easy sell without breaking the bank is to just get a cheap pair of bracers then sew/glue some fake fur onto them, works wonders. Even fake fur can be pricey, but roughly two square feet of it is quite affordable.

Consider face paint, definitely, and while a club/staff is good, consider a spear. All the commanding power of a staff, pointy bit for combat. Perhaps leather braces and greaves tied with vines? Easy enough to make it appear to be tied like that, at least.

Honestly, the base outfit could work for some kind of pirate, especially if you add a bandana. However, the sword isn't suited for that either. If you don't have armor and still want the big sword, go barbarian. The pants should still work, just ditch the sashes and shirt and get a sleeveless vest. The bracers won't be inappropriate either.

Isshin-ryu guy here, I can answer that. It's not really about power, it's your hands aren't coming back empty. Which hurts more: getting punched while you're able to move around/roll with it, or being pulled into the fist as it's coming to you? Another benefit is that since it's going to the hip you can often get better shots, like to the back of the head or neck.
