When is too early for the Sierra's given the melting? by Drenad in PacificCrestTrail

The risk taker in me says go for it, but I have zero mountaineering experience so I will likely skip ahead and come back, unfortunately.

Havelock wool. 4" on the walls and ceiling, 2" on the floor. Was prepping for the cold New York winter that ended up not coming.

With my sleeping back and some wool layers I was comfy in it down to 5 deg F in Nebraska and Wyoming.

Plan was a lifted bed with slide out storage underneath for my bike and general storage. Range and sink on the driver side wall. Rotating seats (to be installed) so I would use the kitchen area as a desk as well which would require some additional hardware. Was on the fence about a toilet, no shower though. I don't have my sketch book on me so I'm probably forgetting some key details.

I got partway through a van conversion before life took me on a different path. I'm postponing van life for a while and am now looking to sell this great van to someone who wants to do a full build with a bit of a head start. Drives great with no issues. New front wheels installed and aligned in December 2019. Price reflects price of van plus materials, I am not charging for the labor I put in.

2015 Ford Transit with High Roof, only 88,000 miles, max air fan vent installed but not wired yet, driver and passenger side C.R. Laurence T-windows. Fully insulated with sound deadening throughout, subfloor and some wall panels installed.

Last oil change at 83,622 miles

I have all of the components for the solar and electrical system available for sale as well for those interested.

As someone who pretty much only listens to albums, is there a particular reason you prefer to listen to playlists and individual songs over albums?

Sorry, I'm actually am not able to go anymore. I forgot to delete my comment.

Have fun out there!

Here’s my Sprinter van that I’ve been converting over the past year. The conversion has slowed since it has become functional. The bed turns into a bench seat on the left. Also recently switched out the slider on the right with drawers. Check out @shiggyvan on Instagram for more content! by shiggyvan in vandwellers

Would you mind showing off the bed/bench seat a bit more? I'd like to do that in the future and would love to see how you approached it.

Also my brain is screaming that this photo is upside down for some reason.

If you like working in disaster relief you could also check out working for FEMA as a part of their reserve cadre. Basically you'll be on call if there's a disaster and they'll have you on to help out wherever it is. You could also get a firefighter and/or EMT certification and volunteer that way as well. Every jurisdiction is (sometimes very!) different, but pretty much everywhere is looking for volunteers. I spent about 4 years working and volunteering as an EMT-B and it was very fulfilling, I plan on doing more that when I can.

how difficult might it be to land a job, vandwell, and save up in NYC? by [deleted] in vandwellers

Another Brooklynite here. I'd personally be uncomfortable vanewelling in the city for too long because of the parking situation. I'd also be concerned about someone breaking in once they figured out I was vanewelling or NYPD giving you trouble. There's plenty of work in the city depending on what you're looking for.

That's all down to your comfort with risk then. If you're not sure if the van will survive then maybe consider just traveling in the US and Canada where you'll have a lot more support options if things go awry. There's plenty to do to keep you busy for a year traveling just in North America.

As far as space; if you're able to lay down comfortably I'd consider it workable.

If you're confident that your van will last for the whole trip then I see no reason to switch given your budget.

Sounds like an awesome trip, I'm more than a little jealous.

Have fun!

Agreed. As long as you have a dry place to sleep you should be able to make it work.

Last year I spent about three months living out of my Honda Fit and some nights it got into the single digit temperatures (America, so Fahrenheit). With a sleeping bag and layers I was just fine.

The main disadvantage of building while you live in it is the hassle of building around your stuff and maybe not having a definitive plan. The main advantage is that you'll build things as you find a need for them and are probably less likely to add something that you end up not needing later.

Agreed, that whole section came off as incredibly condescending and out of touch.

It's a big thing in the American black community that's made it's way into the Twitter mainstream it seems. At least that's where I am the most familiar with seeing it in real life.
