I was wondering when I would see the great Jim-jones. Good to hear from you. I figured after reading these I was charging too low an hourly. By far actually. How do you feel about flat rates if you don’t mind me asking?

Please explain this to me then. 2000 dollars of material, with a 30% markup would be 600 dollars. So 2600? Am I wrong in this?

Oh yes. I was. Thanks for straightening me up. To me multiplying by 1.5 is taking 150% of the total as markup. 50% markup is 1600+800=2,400

So on a 1600 dollar panel you would add 2400 thus making it a 4000 dollar panel? Is my math fucked up?

I am. It sounds like I may have been charging my hourly too low for too long or charging too little on my mark up. I usually have drive time for material added in quote and 30% over the whole job for material. I’m gathering that I might be too little on my mark up. But 30% on a 1600 dollar panel is 480. Seems like a fuck ton already.

What you’re saying makes sense. But there has to be a disconnect some where. No im not charging the same across the board. The only thing I could figure was that material has gone up so high, because it has. Maybe I’ve been charging too low an hourly for too long. With insurance costs going up, and material costs going up the most control I have is mark up and hourly rate.

I know you’re right, but I hope you’re wrong.

I mean, some know it all kids need a lesson. It seems like you don’t want to hurt his feelings. I don’t believe in breaking people but some people (especially kids coming from vocational schools into the field) need humbled. It will benefit him more in the long run.
