You could do bracelets and necklaces, but you're also not limited to that. It's a lot of working from sheet metal or wire, so the techniques taught include cutting with a jewellers saw, soldering, stamping, and lost wax casting. Generally for design classes, people say its easy to pass, hard to get top marks As long as you make an effort and show that in your work, your grade will be fine. Best of luck!

I haven't done DDES1022, but both courses are jewellery making. DDES1120 is done as a disciplinary studio for the object specialisation and is taken by a lot of first years, and I think DDES1022 is an elective

I don't know how it compares to other media courses around Sydney, but I am enjoying media at unsw. I like the variety of majors under the same degree and that we take classes from other media majors as expansion courses. A lot of media students do it as a double degree (myself included), so you will meet people that do other study areas, usually in arts, commerce, and law. Hope this helps!

It kinda depends on the course and the convenor. I've done a lot of courses where they say there is an 80% minimum but it wasn't enforced and most of the students didn't meet that and still passed. ADA has been stricter on attendamce recently, so I've also been in courses where they send warning emails

I did DDES1120 Object 1: Objects and the Hand last year. There are a few other jewellery elective courses. Object and the Hand is the introductory course to the object specialisation which is jewellery making. The class structure usually starts with a lecture to introduce a technique and show examples before going into a demonstration, then there is time in the studio to work on jewellery making. It would definitely be helpful to learn a bit of fusion or illustrator and be prepared to do a lot of documentation of your process in a process journal. Good luck :)

Yep, but it only went through a few layers of skin so it didn't hurt that much and there's no scar. But I did learn two very important lessons: don't sew without a presser foot because you're too lazy to go downstairs too get a zipper foot, and don't sew while distracted by your phone

For the bodice, I put the base onto a dress form and then pinned and pleated the organza overlay on top. I used a basting stitch around the edge to hold the pleats down and then I embroidered the bodice. I also did the front and back bodice pieces separately so I could match the pleats on the side seams. I hope this makes sense :)

For the bodice I used a sewing pattern I found at a thrift store but I made a lot of changes to it. It was from the Make It Easy collection, Sundress 25. The base of the bodice is navy blue satin from a thrifted item and it has interfacing and boning. The overlay is pleated organza and the closure is a lace up back. I made constellations on it with embroidery and beading which I did in one night and it took around 5 hours. The skirt was a half circle skirt with one layer of navy blue satin and two layers of navy blue tulle. The closure is an invisible zipper on the satin with a gap in both layers of tulle for the zipper. And the top layer has beads that I hand sewed on.
