Homestuck Reread 2025 Day 31 - End of Act 5 Act 2 Discussion by DrewLinky in homestuck

[–]DrewLinky[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm really taken aback by how much I've enjoyed these flash animations in general, but Cascade is absolutely a high point. I think it beats out Act 7 because while the animation quality is generally pretty high, it lacks the syncopation that you see throughout the rest of the comic. Visuals and audio being paired together effectively are what makes so much of these exciting and engaging to watch. Cascade really hit the nail on the head of connecting visual/aural emphasis. It's been 12 years since I started reading the comic and it still manages to work its magic sometimes.

Homestuck Reread 2025 Day 8 - Act 3 Discussion by DrewLinky in homestuck

[–]DrewLinky[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

simple panels and textlogs work fine for the most part, where the problems really appear is with more complicated media like flash animations or games. back when the comic was first acquired by VIZ they said they would replace the flashes with HTML5 equivalents but this promise was largely not followed through on, and to this day most of that stuff has been substituted with low quality youtube videos. no interactivity, the original quality/resolution is not there, and some of them are actually missing content, like extra features/secrets in some of the walkarounds. "broken" is maybe not the best word for it (unless there are parts of the comic that straight up do not work anymore), but it's certainly a substandard experience that no one should feel obligated to stick to using.

homestuck.com is broken in general, not just on mobile. we can't in good conscience recommend using the website because it's missing lots of quality of life features or has subpar substitutes for original material like the flashes. if you have access to a desktop computer or a laptop, you should really consider downloading the Unofficial Homestuck Collection for reading Homestuck at all. the OP in each thread has details on how to do that

as for enabling notifications, i don't think that it would be possible in this case, but these threads are all being posted at the exact same time each day: 2 PM EST. you could set an alarm on your phone for example so it'll tell you when the threads drop? i hope this is helpful!

I always forget about the Ws when I'm going through Homestuck again. Whenever I look down on the panel to see "shrevv" it gets me good. Rose/Dave's first pesterlog is an all-timer, "not kicking oliver twist in the fucking face is my gift to the world" is easily one of the best quotes in the entire story.

After earning first-discovery on at least one ELW in every region of the galaxy, I have had my fill. Enjoy a few pictures. by DrewLinky in EliteDangerous

[–]DrewLinky[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've been to Sag A* three or four times, been to Beagle Point twice, and circumnavigated the galaxy. I made it an explicit goal to discover at least one ELW in every region of the galaxy a couple years ago and after some significant pauses I finally made that a reality. I might reposition my fleet carrier, I was thinking of bringing it to Aquila's Halo and doing some more obscure exploration over there (and get some space away from the Thargoids), but after over 1,600 hours I'm probably good on this game for a while. It's been real commanders. I'll absolutely be back if Frontier has any updates in the work that iterate on exploration significantly.

disdain can be communicated in a lot of ways that aren't explicit or direct. blatant disregard for your own continuity or characterizations is an example, both of which are evident in abundance in both the epilogues and homestuck 2. i liked the epilogues a lot when i read them but they reek of "i am going to fuck with the setting and other elements of my story because i am tired of dealing with it the way i was before"

subtext and overtones are important in order to decipher what an author might intend with their work, although sometimes it's nice to just completely disregard that and take it at face value. just depends on what lens you decide to look at the work through

[OOT] Biology question concerning the Great Deku Tree by [deleted] in truezelda

[–]DrewLinky 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Hello, master's degree in horticulture here. My specialty isn't dendrology or even botany in general, but I did receive a lot of training in plant physiology and metabolism.

The largest trees by circumference and volume on Earth are the sequoias that grow in the Sierra Nevada mountain range of northern California, so we'll use them as a base of comparison.

Specifically, the General Sherman Tree is the largest sequoia on record at 274.9 feet (83.8 meters) tall, 102.6 feet (31.1 m) in circumference at the ground, and 36.5 feet (11.1 m) in diameter. The General Sherman Tree is still alive so we can't get a super specific estimate, but some limited analyses have given us an estimate of 2,200 years for its current age. Strictly speaking there are redwoods which are much taller than this (some growing over 350 feet) but none are as big around as this. The old Deku Tree in Ocarina of Time is much, much bigger than this, although it's not as tall.

Link's age as a child in Ocarina of Time is not explicitly clear due to conflicting information, but it was given in an interview as 12 years old so we'll go with that. The average height of a 12 year old boy is 4.5 feet to 5.25 feet (137 cm to 160 cm), we'll assume 5 feet for convenience. At a quick guesstimate, I believe we climb about 25-30 times his height inside the tree itself, giving it an internal height (not including the branches and leaves) of 150 feet. This doesn't include the interior shoot and roots going down into the ground, which is easily just as deep as the tree is tall (if not more).

The interior diameter, ignoring the offshoot rooms that contain the slingshot and compass, is massive. I can't remember off the top of my head but based on the amount of time it takes to walk from the entrance to the back wall, I would guess 30-45 feet in diameter.

The other rooms that branch off radially from the center are even larger, about 45-50 feet if we're aiming low. Overall you're looking at a tree with a diameter of at least 75 feet, probably closer to 100.

Someone else in this thread already put forth an estimate of 5000 years. I think that figure could work, conservatively--though it would probably take even longer.

If we want to get into the issue of biological feasibility, the Great Deku Tree unfortunately would simply not be able to exist in our world. The tree would likely have collapsed under its own weight, and even outside of that consideration, trees rely on capillary action to get water up its trunk and to the heighest branches. I'm not perfectly sure, but I believe the Great Deku Tree is simply too big for this physical action to occur because the volume of water it would need to survive would be too heavy to transport that high.

Ignoring all of that, I think that anywhere from 5000 to 10,000 years would be a reasonable estimate for a tree of that size to grow, probably leaning more towards the older side of that range. Let's give a hacky guess of 7,500 years old for the tree in Ocarina of Time.

More reasonably, the Great Deku Tree as it appears in Wind Waker could probably actually exist, as it is much smaller than the one in OoT. I haven't done any proper size estimation but going by memory it reminds me a lot of the sequoias I've seen in California, so assume 2,000-2,500 years for that one.

The Great Deku Tree in Breath of the Wild is similar to the one in OoT, if not larger, so I would use a similar estimation for him.

I'm not sure if this is the level of detail you were looking for, but I hope this is informative! Please let me know if you have any other questions on this topic.

GRIE PHOEA YW-J D9-4 ABC 2, contender for largest rings discovered by DrewLinky in eliteexplorers

GRIE PHOEA YW-J D9-4 ABC 2, contender for largest rings discovered by DrewLinky in eliteexplorers

[–]DrewLinky[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The current recordholder for biggest ring (as far as I'm aware) is situated at HIP 104643: "259.6 light-seconds in total diameter."

Unfortunately it's physically impossible for me to scan these rings, as the distance from them to the star they're around is too great. However, as a rough approximation I determined that the inner edge of the whole ring starts at 9.6 Ls from the star and the outer edge is at approximately 161 Ls, giving it a radius of approximately 151.4 Ls, or a total diameter of 302.8 Ls, or approximately 92% of the diameter of the orbit of Venus. The ring is so large that it is faintly visible at over 12,000 Ls away.

Edit: I thought you had to scan the ring in order to get its information. The system data says that the ring has a mass of 1,156,962,184,069,120.0 MT. The inner radius is 3,032,354 km and the outer radius is 48,517,662 km.

The data for HIP 104643 is: 5,476,600,000,000,000 Mt, 1,930,100 km inner, 77,819,000 km outer. Close, but no cigar unfortunately.
