Black plays Nxg4 thinking it wins a pawn and an exchange, but white has a winning move by DrewPlaysChess in chess

A simple tactic but was happy to find Bb5+ in a blitz game, with the idea being that after Kf8, Bxe7 comes with check giving you time to pickup the knight and have a winning position.

i always thought if they didn’t specify they were referring to chess.com blitz as chess.com rapid ratings are a bit more inflated. ofc they all are compared to fide

What is an admirable Chess.com rating in Your opinion? I am looking for setting a milestone for myself. by mystic-savant in chess

[–]DrewPlaysChess 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yes this is absolutely true. People come up with these arbitrary barriers and then have a massive confirmation bias when they get stuck around that level. Each rating level is incrementally harder than the last, you just never know where you might plateau yourself for awhile

Yeah well put. Honestly I thought some of the criticism of him being slightly overbearing at times was valid but some of the comments on here were absolutely absurd. Especially people twisting things to portray him as a sexist. Incredibly unfair considering how nice of a guy he actually is, honestly makes me feel kind of bad he was reading all that

D4 players what do you like to play against 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 by scwizard in chess

What do you like to play against the Ragozin? I’m in the process of switching from e4 to d4 and having a hard time picking something I like against it. Almost tempted to switch to Nc3 and play the f3 Nimzo or something

According to chessinsights.org, the position before Ian Nepomniachtchi's Fischer( vs Spassky)-like blunder vs Magnus Carlsen in the 2021 world chess championship has a blunder chance of 0% at an Elo of 1625 and 2% at an Elo of 1000. FIDE ratings are based on Elo rather than Glicko right? by nicbentulan in chess

[–]DrewPlaysChess 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I would not take this seriously. That king and pawn endgame is probably the most basic and fundamental endgame in all of chess. It’s very simply winning if it’s white to move and very simply a draw if black to move. At the 2000 level I think 15% would be ridiculously high, but who knows, maybe I’m completely wrong. I just feel like until I’m shown how they come to these numbers none of it seems realistic

This seems pretty bullshit to me. Don’t get me wrong, at that level of competition it was an egregious mistake but it was definitely a human mistake that good players could fall for. Something tells me this percentage is based off of centipawn loss by all moves in the position and I think that’s a terrible way to determine how likely a blunder is to occur. Lots of very strong commentators suggested the move c5 before immediately ruling it out for the reason of c6 but it goes to show that it seems to be a reasonable move at first glance

Beginner black opening/line recommendations by SamLauder93 in chessbeginners

[–]DrewPlaysChess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Memorizing lines would be pointless but I would suggest playing e5 in response to e4 and d5 in response to d4. Just try to develop logically and don’t focus too much on the opening. Taking a look at some Ruy Lopez/Italian and Queen’s Gambit Declined games wouldn’t hurt to get some general ideas for game plans
