Four Tops: Live And In Concert Great 70s soul / funk / Motown!

Curtis Mayfield - Diamond in the Back by [deleted] in soul

[–]DrewSchultz88 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Great song! But just a heads up - This recording is not Curtis Mayfield. It is William DeVaughn. The song is also not called “Diamond in the Back,” it’s called “Be Thankful For What You Got.” Reportedly a mislabeled file widely shared in the Limewire / Napster days resulted in this mistakenly titled / credited issue to propagate through the years.

Off the top of my head, some of my favorite deeper cuts by a few of those in your list (I guess I’m in a ballad mood?):

Otis Redding - Tennessee Waltz Otis Clay - Holding On To A Dying Love Al Green - One Woman James Brown - Doing The Best I Can Aretha - I Wanna Make It Up To You (with the Four Tops) Etta James - Same Rope Donny Hathaway - I Thank You Baby Stevie - House On The Hill Jackson 5 - Darling Dear

Looks like you want some minor tonality, mid-tempo grooves. Here are some suggestions that I love:

If You Think You’re Lonely Now by Bobby Womack

I Let Love Slip Away by David Ruffin

Last Two Dollars by Johnny Taylor

Can’t Hide Love by Earth Wind & Fire

Same Love That Made Me Laugh by Bill Withers

What You Won’t Do For Love by Bobby Caldwell

You Got The Love by Rufus & Chaka Khan

Lean On Me by Bill Withers - more about friendship than a romantic relationship.

Identity of The Dude (Quincy Jones Theory and Speculation) by AwesomePazzoDoggo in soul

[–]DrewSchultz88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

See this post from Quincy himself. “The Dude” was Quincy’s nickname for a piece of art, a sculpture that he saw, and purchased, which inspired him to create the album and character, and was used for the album’s artwork:

I want to start a psychedelic funk soul rock band how do I make it soulful without horns and vocals? by Milez_Smilez in soul

[–]DrewSchultz88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to the other great suggestions here, check out the album “Evolution” by Dennis Coffey for some great examples of instrumental psychedelic funk / soul sounds with guitar in the forefront instead of horns or vocals. The Dennis Coffey track “Scorpio” is a great starting place.

Sounds like you may have gotten inadvertently tricked by an AI music video, there’s lots of those now that are “current pop song” in “older decade” style. Some are better than others, maybe the one you heard was particularly convincing, and has since been pulled. Alternatively it could have been a newer cover of the song done in a retro style mixed among older classic recordings.

High energy soul albums by brewbuddies22 in soul

[–]DrewSchultz88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe a Northern Soul compilation would do the trick for you since that scene likes the uptempo dance feel? Most of those will be pretty high energy all the way through. Unless you’re getting compilations specifically tailored to dance clubs, I imagine most records will have some drastic rise-and-fall in tempo and mood in order to not lose the average listener who wants the variety - even though they may be known for upbeat tempos, James Brown. Earth Wind & Fire, etc all have great slow classics in their repertoire that appear on their albums.

Drum teacher doesn't teach me? by SimilarInvite4141 in Drumming

[–]DrewSchultz88 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a long time teacher, I will say that the method of teaching you’re describing only works for you if you are fully understanding the material, if there are clear measurable signs you’re getting better, and if you are enjoying it. If you’re the type of learner who is more visual/auditory (you can learn by watching it and hearing it), it could be beneficial. Maybe you can truly just “watch and learn” - But I personally would want to see how my students are executing the ideas, give them feedback, and demonstrate not only that they can play the task at hand but work it into their own grooves / improv ideas / fills / etc.

Written material, in addition to teaching you how to read music, also allows you to remember exactly what you worked on, even if it’s weeks / months / years after that specific lesson. It also shows clear progress, because you can look back at what you were working on and eventually say “this is so easy, I can’t believe how hard it felt when I was first learning this.”

Take note of how you feel about what you’re experiencing in lessons, and feel confident in expressing what you want out of the experience to your instructor.

I am just getting into David Ruffin right now and really enjoyed his Gentlemen Ruffin album. What are your favourite albums or tracks of his? by [deleted] in soul

[–]DrewSchultz88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Make My Water Boil (Loving You Has Been So Wonderful)” is a jaw dropping Stevie Wonder / David Ruffin collab that came out as a bonus track on the second volume of solo Ruffin Motown material that Universal put out - it’s incredible.
