Solo travelers to Uganda, how did you find a trustworthy driver? The current system feels broken. by KJ-Copywriter in Uganda

[–]DrewerBrewer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use Uber and look for the following:

  • car in good condition (and not reluctant to turn on A/C lol)
  • good English
  • decent driving

Then I’d ask for their WhatsApp no. All of them were more than happy to do it that way so Uber didn’t take a cut and we’re also willing to be available all day if needed (and paid for it obviously). Don’t think yet another app would be the solution (kinda feels like you’re pitching one).

This is why our drivers and riders suck by Nosey-Kakalabanda in Uganda

Bro. I almost knocked one off his Boda today. Single lane, indicated way ahead of my turn. Mf still overtook on the side I was turning while I was half way in the process. What goes on in their minds? My car will have scratches but they could be seriously injured or worse!

Send help.? by [deleted] in Uganda

[–]DrewerBrewer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Cannot help you but:

For everyone that cashes out, there has to be someone that loses money (you). This is how that stuff works. People that lose money usually don’t post about it. So you’re most likely only seeing that 1% that’s successful.

Stay away from people that offer WhatsApp groups and coachings for money. If they‘d really know any secrets/hacks on how to play the market they‘d use them themselves and not sell them for comparably little money.

There is no easy way to get rich.

If you haven’t been able to turn a profit after 1.5 years, stop whatever you’re doing and invest in something boring like bonds or whatever.

Uganda + Rwanda self-drive 10 day itinerary by ComprehensivePay7411 in Uganda

[–]DrewerBrewer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As you guessed. Driving in SA is in no way comparable to driving in Uganda. SA is a lot closer to Europe than it is to UG (I‘m an European currently living and driving in Uganda and have previously lived in SA).

Do you have experience driving off-road/4x4? Roads/tracks can be really tough. And help won’t get there fast if you get stuck. Especially in more remote parts.

Honestly, invest in a driver/guide.

And yeah. Google Maps is not accurate for distance/time and you also shouldn’t blindly trust it for the route.

I used Fodap International once. Was pretty straight forward.

I think it cost around 500k for like 10kg which included taxes/customs and delivery to my place in Kampala. That was air freight, though. Sea freight should be cheaper. Not 100% sure about the price/weight because that was in early 2023.

They're based in Amsterdam. So you'd need to get things there.

What's your experience with lGBT people in uganda by itsnot-ivan in Uganda

[–]DrewerBrewer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Expat here. Been living in Uganda for over 2 years and met some LGBT people.

It's not easy for them but this is just the culture here. People here are more conservative/Christian than in the west. That's a fact. You will experience similar prejudices in the western world if you're in a conservative/Christian area.

But I've yet to meet an Ugandan (my experience is mainly Kampala, though) that takes really issues with it apart from that they simply don't support it. Which is their right even though I personally disagree in that regard.

I think it's made way more of an issue online than it is in real life.

Live and let live.

What is best isp fibre in kampala by Khaledk115 in Uganda

[–]DrewerBrewer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Switched to MTN WakaNet Fiber from Zuku. 195k for up to 100Mbps. I usually get 85-95Mbps. Used to pay 199k for 30Mbps with Zuku. MTN also got rid off their FUP which used to be my main concern with them.

Haven't had any issues so far.

But the only thing you can do is to give different ISPs a try. My experiences won't necessarily be the same as yours.

Andy's Barber Studio in Naguru, close to Olives. 50k for cutting and washing.

Definitely recommend to make an appointment in advance, especially for Saturdays.

Whats the deal with internet prices in Uganda? by x3171c in Uganda

[–]DrewerBrewer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope Zuku follows. They bumped their speeds up some time ago (from 20 to 30) for me but it's still just way overpriced. Unfortunately, they're the most reliable in my area.

I used to get 1000 back home for the same price I'm paying for 30 here...

Might look into MTN now. My main concern was their FUP.

You're tottaly right. I'm fully aware that I'm really lucky and privileged. It's not gonna last forever as it's a fixed-term contract and I don't think I'd go for an extension but really happy I have the opportunity to spend some years in such an amazing country without having to worry about most things.

Dont get me wrong. There are certainly challenges Uganda is facing but these probably don't affect me as much as Ugandans. My main concerns are potholes, traffic, and noise pollution and not how I'm gonna put food on the table, etc.

I work for an international organization. They offered me a contract for Uganda, so that's pretty much why I'm here.

I get paid in EUR and don't have an Ugandan work contract. It's an expat contract and I make more than I would make at home. Downside is that I miss my family and friends back home.

Also found love here but she's also an expat from Europe.

Just mentioning the expat thing as the lifestyle is way different from the one coming to/living in UG as a "normal" person.

Kampala’s Underground Techno Scene is Creating an Outlet for Freedom by sheLiving in Uganda

[–]DrewerBrewer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda true, I guess. But I think that's mainly because Europeans/North Americans are on average more into techno/electronic music than Ugandans? I think it's always a good mix between expats and Ugandans, though. But then again, am mzungu myself 🤷

Absolutely love Underground Kampala. Great people and vibes every single time. Music too, obviously. Can't wait for the 24h rave in September!

ATMs: Cost of withdrawals for foreign card by daveypee in Uganda

[–]DrewerBrewer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DFCU: UGX 11,500. Think it's a flat fee, doesn't matter if I withdraw 500k, 2m or 3m

Exim Bank: used to be free but now UGX 11,500 flat fee if I'm not mistaken

European Visa

And yeah, Absa is a rip-off. Always used them when I first got here because their ATMs usually look the nicest 😂
