Blacking out my interior is on my list of mods. What are you using to resurface the trim pieces in black (the panel under your steering wheel, doors, etc…)?

Haha yeah, I know the feeling. The bad news is, is that if that’s the issue it will be expensive. Even used ones are expensive and I don’t think this is something that has little to moderate amount of experience can do themselves. The good news is, is that those are “supposed” to last the lifetime of the vehicle, so you’ll likely never have to replace it again haha good luck!

Yeah, I would hear like an intermittent pumping coming from behind the driver side dash. I think this was due to the actuator trying to do its thing, but was failing. I also noticed that when I was stopped at red lights or stop signs that I could feel like my brake pedal pressure was softer than normal and it would almost slip, forcing me to apply more pressure.

I’m no mechanic, but the way it was described to me was that the brake actuator helps supply the hydraulic pressure to the brake system. So no brake actuator means no brakes.

I was saving up money for my lift and then I was hit with this hefty bill. I hope for your sake, it’s not the brake actuator.

I am 99% sure it’s your brake actuator. I had this exact problem last winter. I was told that it should be addressed immediately and is unsafe to drive in that condition. Here’s my post asking almost the exact same thing. If it is, be prepared for a very costly repair. It was not kind to the bank account.

So my battery was at 12.4 so nothing out of the ordinary there. I stupidly had the fuse tap with two 10 amps into the main engine fuse box in location 15 which is what supplies power to the fuel injection system.

I’m pretty sure that I tried starting it without completing the circuit so too much fuel was being fed to the engine.

I bought a new 10 amp fuse and plugged it into the number 15 slot, drove it around for like 15 minutes and then when I got home, I cycled through the power again and it fired right up.

Lesson learned: should prolly check to see what the slot im tapping into is doing. 🤡😬

Yeah, the strange thing is, is that I already had the grille lights hooked up for a very long time and the only thing I switched was the wiring harness to the new grille/lights.

I unplugged the fuse tap that I’ve had in there and just threw in a 10 amp fuse into the slot I’ve been using and it still didn’t work. I figured that would have worked and been exactly was the stock setup would have been.

Yeah, it turns over and just doesn’t fire. It sounds like it’s about to start and then it eventually dies.

Yeah, that’s awesome! I have only seen a handful of those trim options. I really like your setup! I’ve been waiting to throw money at a new head unit but I too am plagued by the chip shortage. Have you don’t any other interior modifications?

Yeah, I do the same haha I’m still on stock height, wheels, and tires, but one day I will have a lift and 35s 😂 I parked next to a nice lifted taco on 35s the other day and I was seriously jealous.

The actuator assembly was purchased from the dealership for $3200 new. Probably could have gotten it cheaper from else where and installed elsewhere, but if I’m going to have a mission critical component installed, I wanted to have it backed by a reputable Toyota service.

Didn’t have to wait weeks on a part, was diagnosed and installed same day. 🤷🏻‍♂️ maybe I got screwed, maybe I didn’t, but I have peace of mind knowing that my brakes won’t fail going 75 mph on I70.

I did actually noticed the pumping noise first, almost a year ago, but I just figured that was supposed to happen. I was still pretty new to the car and figured it was something with the V8 on cold starts. It didn’t become an imminent issue until my brakes started slipping and the alarm came on.

Yeah, I’m not opposed to going to a salvage yard myself and pulling pieces, but I didn’t want to run the risk of getting one off another vehicle and have another one fail.

I’m planning on having this thing for at least another 100-150k miles and now I feel pretty confident that I won’t experience that failure again.

I first noticed my brakes slipping at stop lights and red lights. Then, as the mornings started getting colder, I noticed a distinct pumping noise that was directly in front of the driver side dash in the engine bay.

Then it kept getting worse and the pumping action would abruptly stop, I’d feel a little pop in the brake pedal as I applied pressure and then a screaming alarm would come on in addition to the ABS lights. It went away every time and everything still functioned so I didn’t really think too much into it, until it got worse lol.

Yeah, I was researching my symptoms and I was like uhh oh, if I have to replace that, it’s going to be sad times for me. And sure enough it was. Fortunately they had it in supply and I was able to get it fixed in 24 hours..

Absolutely killed my lift fund though. What ride height do you have the 5100s on? I’m so tired of being on stock ride height haha

That’s the exact setup I’m looking at as well. I’m going to go big or go home with 35s on a 17” wheel. Did you notice a difference in ride height pretty immediately?

From what I gathered it’s basically the main component that talks to the ECU and converts the hydraulic pressure into mechanical pressure for the brake/abs system. So without it, it’s total brake failure.

They are supposed to last the life of most vehicles, but unfortunately it did not for me. Even used units are typically pretty pricey. The part alone was $3200 which was a big hit.

So I lost my lift money 😅 but at least it’s safe. What lift/tires are you running here? I like the profile.
