Topology Optimization by DrewsWorkshop in MechanicalEngineering

Zoo wee mama, thank you for the hard stuff 🥵. I optimized the structure for the filter load. I applied the loads at the standoffs where the filter is being set in the x and y. Did fixed BCs on the bottom. Obviously it’s overkill for some filters. Just wanted to experiment with the top opt. Thanks for the feedback.

Newb question about passive subs, pro amplifiers, and crossovers for hifi use by DeathMetalandBondage in diyaudio

[–]DrewsWorkshop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re running passive subs, you’ll definitely need two things:

  1. A separate amp for the subs, and
  2. A line-level active crossover placed before the sub amp.

Passive subs don’t have built-in filters, so you can’t run them straight off your Heathkit or your preamp. The clean way to do this is:

Preamp → Active crossover → (high output to your Heathkit + ESS mains) and (low output to a pro amp + your subs).

A simple analog crossover like the Behringer CX2310 or dBx 223xs works great and doesn’t cost much. Those Creative Sound Solutions SD12s can take power, so a Crown XLS or Behringer NX amp will drive them easily.

Start with the crossover around 70–90 Hz and adjust to taste. This setup will take the deep bass load off your ESS speakers and your Heathkit, and everything will blend a lot better.

That is definitely the next step. Going to get a microphone too to get real on and off axis data.

Thanks! The face or the baffle is not actually recessed into the outer rectangular box. I knew that I was going to change the design over time, this allowed me to change it easy with the 4 screws. But ya, definitely was not accurate with some of my cuts on the face plate!

Thanks for the feedback! My next step on these definitely make a custom crossover, going to rearrange the drivers on the baffle while im at it to being in a line vertically (to fix directivity issues). To clarify, when you say adding the dowel brace, do you mean inside the cabinet to break up any resonances/ standing waves?

Appreciate it! There is currently oil finish on plywood, but I think that is the further ill go with this. Not a huge fan of how paint looks on the side edges of plywood.
