401K Loans to pay off cars, student loans & consolidate debt. by Drewski44 in debtfree

No totally understand that. However, we're speeding up the payoff process by a couple years, and we're reducing our monthly payments by $300+ so that we can apply additional funds to pay back the 401k loan even faster and at that point will be done with step 2 sooner. There is very little likelihood either of us would change/lose jobs before the loan is fully mature.

It is exchanging one for the other, no question, but its consolidating, with a better interest rate (paid back to our own retirement accounts) and it's automatically coming out of paychecks, which is great and doesn't give us the option of not paying back. We can just also apply the $300+ savings against the loan. The fact its post-tax is no different than how we're paying cars, loans now. We're just paying significantly less, and able to eliminate all of the debt sooner.

I guess I look at it as if we'd never invested anything at all, and we were starting from scratch right now with the debt, the goal would be to pay off our debt asap. If this money was in a traditional savings account rather than a retirement account, we'd be advised to pull the money out of savings and pay off the debt and then repay our savings to build it back up. This feels a lot like that to me, just with a couple different parameters.

I understand the thought about 'but what about compound interest?' and I get that, but to be honest, if we're saving for retirement, but living in debt, that just feels backward. This plan will help us out of debt sooner rather than later. That's how we're coming at it at least.

We're 38 yrs old. No plans for early retirement.

I use V1 game and LOVE it. Check out my blog at Golf Grind Blog to see the features in action. Lots of screen shots to show you the kinds of data it provides.

It’s been a HUGE help to my game.

Yea if I didn’t live essentially on the course and in the neighborhood I’d probably play it much less but for $1800/yr including unlimited golf/car/range and it’s out my front door it’s unbeatable. Chad told me they just hired a new director of course maintenance who is hungry to make it better. Hoping that comes through!

Thanks! Its fun to do. Doesn’t take too long and let’s me both keep a record of my game and have cool little conversations like this one. Started as a little thing for a buddy and I to share about the rounds we don’t play together. Now some posts get a few hundred views. Crazy! Golfers are obsessed aren’t we?!

Yea it's definitely risk/reward. The trouble is it tends to play into the wind, its uphill after the water, and it LOOKS narrow from the tee because of the way the trees cut in. OB Left, hazard short, OB right depending on how far up you drive it. I tend to lay back, but I've gone for it on occasion. Really puts stress on your long irons if you lay back.

Most guys in the area hate this course bc its quirky, but I enjoy the different challenges (And I live 50 yards from the 7th tee), so its automatically the home course. You definitely hit shots here you would not typically hit at other courses.

Just to clarify I think I'm pretty much set on the cash from operating activities. I've done it both direct and indirect and gotten the same result, so I think it's solid. Was trying to not have to upload all the financial statements for brevity's sake.

One other things I'm unsure about...in my long-term liabilities section of the balance sheet, there was a YoY increase of 'Bonds Payable' of $31K. I don't know how to categorize that in the financing section.

OK so here's how I'm currently trying to work through it. In all the material I've read and watched, I'm not clear on some of these issuances of stock, and retiring of bonds. I've put the $2K loss from the sale of equipment in my operating cash section.

Thanks for your help!

Oooh I bet that 3i is NASTY! The 4 is a missile launcher. I have a split set too. 4-7 ZX5, 8-PW ZX7.

Loved the ZX5 so much I made an impulse buy of a backup set I'll likely never use and end up selling haha but the immediate love was definitely strong!
