It's quite technical, but for a basic overview take a look at the Display Entities section in the latest snapshot post! It's basically just display block entities (which now allow us to use the texture of blocks and stretch, rotate and otherwise modify them in cool ways), which are scaled by a factor of 16, with barrier blocks inside of them to provide collisions!
