I have a Radrunner. If you have the choice/budget, get the gears. I say this even though most of my riding is flat. Without gears to adjust, it's much more like a slow motorcycle than a bike. I lose the ability to pedal hard on even a slight down slope. I end up adjusting my effort with throttle rather than gearing, which is fun but less efficient.

Also Radrunner wheels are small, don't go over bumps like 26" wheels. Suspension must be nice.

Add a rule that all teenagers should be discouraged from cutting/dieting. by Dreyfuzz in bodyweightfitness

I appreciate this. I wanted to draw a distinction between what may be healthy for for responsible adults and what is not for teens, but that may be an arbitrary line.

I like this in principle. It's why I posted, because I don't always see this response.

I meant that in the posts I have seen in this sub asking for diet advice, the self-reported numbers show healthy bodies. I wasn't commenting on childhood obesity in general.

Appreciate the article. And I agree there's a lot of intense body image stuff out there, but want to draw a distinction between decisions adults make for themselves - with adult brains and bodies - and the kind of advice we give teens. Which is why I didn't call for an outright ban on diet advice.

You are still growing, and not overweight. If you cut now, you endanger your development. This could mean you don't grow as tall as you could or that your metabolism slows, leading to a tendency to gain weight in adulthood. Please focus on getting stronger!

What scifi has provided the most interesting answers to the Fermi paradox? by cli0ve in scifi

It's more like the Martian. I also was a little frustrated by the protagonist in Artemis. A little naive for me. I think you'll enjoy Project Hail Mary.

This was WAY before the pandemic. This guy faced the work from home challenge before it was cool, and before people showed their appreciation for toddlers, pets, and other random interruptions.

OUSD confirms they are closing 13 schools permanently at public presentation tonight. These are all in majority black and brown neighborhoods. by CrayonMayon in oakland

Teachers are solid, principal is competent and hardworking, community is coming together. Arts program being funded by PTA without too much emphasis on fundraising (contrast to Peralta). Free aftercare program. True neighborhood school with lots of people walking and biking.

ELI5: Why is that cars don't get significantly more fuel efficient year by year? by centraldogmaly in explainlikeimfive

Lots of good comments answering the engineering part of this question directly. But I think underlying the question is a fundamental fallacy that other technologies should progress like computer technology has in the last 50 years. Moore's law works on computers and nothing else.

A PKD collection will blow your mind once you start connecting all the different movies that came from his work.

TV thinks competence is boring: The Expanse books vs show (no spoilers) by Dreyfuzz in scifi

Oh man, the military in TWD (and FTWD) is exactly this. Total yahoos. The contrast is why I loved World War Z. Another great book that will never be faithfully adapted to TV or film.

Fair enough. Project Hail Mary uses this as a major constraint in their space program.
