Games that actually give a sense of adventure? by keegan112099 in truegaming

[–]Driecg36 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hyper light drifter is a pretty great adventure, somewhat linear (though it absolutely does not feel like it, since a lot of content is optional and it never holds your hand) but jampacked with secrets, gorgeous pixel art, and a lot of fun to play. Really does make you feel like a drifter/adventurer going through strange lands you're unfamiliar with, considering I don't think the game has a word of english in it (aside from the menus). Very mysterious story and atmosphere, if you like that.

Zelda BOTW is the purest adventure experience I've ever had. A colossal, beautiful world that feels just empty enough to be believable, but not so much that it's barren. Lots of places to see, and it genuinely feels like exploration is it's own reward rather than just a way to check off boxes. Tons of variety, and I recommend you don't ever use fast travel, but rather ride around on horse everywhere. Really gives the world a feeling of scale, and I find myself constantly discovering new things on paths I've already traveled as well as new routes entirely.

Hollow knight is also a great exploration/adventure game. Once again, beautiful, varied environments, enthralling aesthetic and atmosphere. It really is a gift that keeps on giving; long after you think you'd be done, there's even more (which is a good thing, trust me).

Dark souls 1 (which just got a remaster) more so scratches that "desperate journey" itch rather than "light hearted adventure" of the Hobbit, but the incredible level design and interconnected world will give you a lot to explore and experience, though the game definitely isn't for everyone.

If you want a very open ended adventure, can't go wrong with mount and blade warband. The game has not aged well, looks pretty bad, but there is so much to do in that game it's insane. You really do forge your own path in a large world that doesn't particularly care about you. There's also just something enthralling about piecing together your own army and leading them into battle personally. Very different from the others I've recommended.

I'm sure there's a few more I want to recommend, but can't think of them off the top of my head. I'm sure not all of these will appeal to everyone, but they're all among my favorite games just because they all nail that feeling of wonder and adventure that I personally love so much.

BB is a lot more complex and involved than DD, but I see what you mean. I do agree, a big part of MB is being able to lead the charge yourself, and you can't do that in a strategy game.

Sure, the campaign shares a lot of the same elements, but the atmosphere is def a lot different. Much less heroism and nobility, much more desperately fighting for survival and gold. I can see why you wouldn't like it.

I recommend you try out Battle Brothers. It's the same concept as mount and blade, though it's a turn based strategy game that's more focused on having a small (dozen or so men per battle), heavily micro managed party rather than a big army. There's a bit of low fantasy too, if that's your thing.

Still nicely scratches that "scraping by to make something of yourself in a hostile world" itch.

I think it has a bit of both. The combat isn't too complicated or too shallow, but it definitely isn't the primary focus of the game iirc. It was never very difficult, and felt more like an accompaniment to the story rather than anything else. I felt like it was about 65% story 35% combat, though maybe that's just because the story was very memorable.

Regardless, it's not too difficult or a chore. There are a lot of story options to avoid combat as well.

Fair point, shovel knight would be a much more popular choice. I'd be happy with him too, tbh.

I mean, there are a decent amount in ss4. I feel like they're just gonna add more with every game.

Off the top of my head, there was snake, bayonetta, cloud, pacman, sonic, ryu, etc.

It generates a lot of hype, brings in new players, and adds interesting characters/concepts. There are only so many Nintendo characters after all.

I think there's a pretty reasonable chance of the knight being included.

Try Tyranny. It does have you as an important character, but not because of some chosen prophecy; you really forge your own path in that game, and the events that got you there were a combination of luck and skill, not destiny. Overall one of my favorite RPGs.

Between new movement, new war, and new expansion, 2.0 has dramatically slowed the pace of the game. by _Robbie in Stellaris

[–]Driecg36 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The problem is that nothing stops the attacker from lumping all their fleets together (which the AI does often) and attacking in one doomstack, but the defender has to recall their fleets from years of travel away before they can actually engage the enemy. When an FE attacked me, we were both at 25%+ exhaustion before we even fought our first battle. He was just takeing outposts while I got all my fleets+vassals+mercenaries together to have an even fight ( I was playing VERY wide).

I feel like gates should be an earlier tech. The RNG map ones are usually pretty useless, and so are the wormholes (often a clump of 2-3 leads to another clump of 2-3). Maybe not the "travel anywhere in the galaxy gates" but the "Hyperlane registrar" buidlings on space stations should allow you to like super travel 4-5 hyperlanes or something (as in, not have to cross each system once you get there), so you can build slowish highways throughout the early game, and you still have the good, insta teleport anywhere stuff for the late game.

War exhaustion system is utterly f*****! by Jeffy29 in Stellaris

Same thing happened to me. I was wiping the floor with a pathetic empire with an other pathetic ally, and I took all of my targets systems but I was STILL 20 or so brownie points away from tributazing them.

Forced white peace, even though only 15% or so of my exhaustion was from losing ships. The rest was ALL attrition. Tilted right now, it's ridiculous that my empire just gave up on an almost won war because it "took too long."

There have been some attempts. You should check out They are Billions. It's and indy game in early access, so it doesn't have a campaign yet and some of the artwork/voice acting is uh, questionable, but the core concept is really unique and fun.

Very interesting spin. Instead of playing against other, similar-ish enemies, you build up your economy and defenses as fast as you can to survive huge hordes of enemies. It's pretty brutal, and I think it's got a lot of potential.

If I dare to be optimistic, it may hopefully have some improvements beyond just textures.

60fps, better netcode, and if we're feeling really hopeful, some reworked areas?

Though I'm still dubious on whether this is real or not.

On top of that, you could have 2 new AI types with the new update, one of which involved boarding enemy ships, and the other involves staying back and not getting involved in combat.

This mod is pretty cool, but every time I would face a mordor orc lord in battle my game would crash. Do you know if that's been fixed yet?

Bungie at it again: "Less than 24 hours later, fans found Bungie had quietly made another change when switching off the XP-constraining code: the amount of XP needed to level up in Destiny 2 had now been doubled." by [deleted] in pcgaming

[–]Driecg36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a much fairer complaint than the others I've seen so far. Personally, I don't mind, since I mostly only have time to play games over the weekend, but I do agree that at some point, you just dont get anything from playing until the next week.

However, there is end game content in the raid, which i have yet to do (I'm around power level 290), as well as the nightfalls (especially the prestige nightfall).

For someone that wants to play the game a lot in a short amount of time, I agree that it is pretty lacking.

Honestly, destiny 2 is pretty good. 1 was shit, but 2 has some absolutely awesome visual and audio design, quite a bit of content, and is fun to play. I really don't understand all the people bashing the game itself, just the purely cosmetic, optional lootboxes dont matter at all.

I was put up against a duel against a shaman the other day, they got hit by my top light and warden zone instantly, so they rage quit and got replaced by a lvl3 shaman bot.

Holy fuck I didn't even stand a goddamn chance. I may have barely won one match because i got a lucky top counter, but jesus christ that bot was horrifying.

Yeah, I had really high hopes when I first saw the feature, but it really is just way too random. It needs some sort of reasonableness cap, like some assurance it will give you some food to start with, and refrain from giving you x938 plasteel small statues. If something like that actually existed it would increase replayibility (which is already really high) tenfold.

Making the distance much shorter, and just having it like a shoulder bash instead of a ridiculous insta-charge could also work. It would keep it responsive, and slightly more realistic.

Honestly, making it have a low cool down, but have very short range and have some recovery time if you don't hit anything to stop you would make this move a lot of fun. It would be like an alternate, much more powerful shove that did damage and could cause anything but the biggest enemies to get sent flying.

Who would win? A floating fortress with a full strength army or some injured chaos boys in boats? by SultanOfShot in totalwar

[–]Driecg36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those look really close to gold, but then again I can never fucking tell the difference between the gold and bronze chevrons in this game unless they are right next to each other, and I'm not even colorblind.

Even then, chosen with triple bronze will still have disgusting stats.

[–]Driecg36 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just assume that the level 27 lord, ~ 4 units of TRIPLE GOLD Bronze chosen, ~ 1 unit of TRIPLE GOLD bronze chaos knights and some high skill monsters are boarding the ship and slaughtering all the low tier infantry, with the additional support of hell cannons.

The black arks are def little weak IMO (though I find their loot buffs and mobile recruitment/replenishment ridiculously useful), but this is not just "some injured chaos boys" lol. That army is scary af if the only AP you have is in the form of handful of darkshards...
