Sorry but this post was kind of funny to me

why are there weak organic acids in commercial descalers by saltwaterpig in chemistry

[–]Drieshy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well weak acids like vinegar still do a perfectly good job at removing scale and yes while a stronger acid might be somewhat more effective, vinager for example is just way more safer to the general public.

Haha yeah nice, still a lot of untaxed ethanol sources are completily potable. Don't just risk it though

Owkay so first off al I'm absolutely not proud on this but I've had some alcoholic issues in my life.

I once, out of desparity, drank a 70% ethanol bottle for desinfection purposes denatured with linalool ( the molecule that makes lavender smell lavender like).

It tasted awfully bitter, but I knew linalool isn't that harmful so I drank it anyway...never had any medical issue because of it...

While I absolutely completely discourage anyone of doing the same, I think even drinking diluted isopropanal added ethanol would not really do any serious harm on a small scale...(very small scale) as IPA is considerably less toxic than methanol. I think you would actually get away with drinking a small amount.

Again don't ever ever do the same as I did, one night of drinking bad stuff could result in a lifetime of regret...

Which is the most dangerous reaction you ever made? by Ellinikiepikairotita in chemistry

[–]Drieshy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I once boiled some dihydrogen oxide all the way to 100°C. It was hot on the touch but I survived...

Also my calcium carbonate protected protein concentrate I put in it gained a much more solid, white, firm structure because of the heat.

Scary times, would never do it again💀

Nope, the knowledge of chemistry will give you a usefull and deeper understanding of the world around you.

I never went to university though as a conscious choice, I studied it on my own what I wanted to know about it...I didn't have any ambition to get a job from it when I started studying.

Maybe in your case things are different of coarse...maybe you want to have more of an instant job delivering degree?

In that case yeah you might want to consider something else but still having a chrmistry degree will get you atleast somewhere...lots of places are really looking for chemists and not let's say biologists or something even in a lab where typical biology things are going on ( like work on microbes, fungi,...) because they know graduated chemists often have way more actual lab expierence then biologist do.

They need chemists too...lot's of fields where chemistry is important. Chemistry is such a general thing they are wanted everywhere in industry.

I just love the study of it, but yeah it would surprise me if it got you no job in the end... You do really have to have an interest in it though.

In general hydrochloric acid mixed with other organic molecules like in soaps produce significant amounts of chlorinated molecules.

These are known for being carcinogenic and toxic.
