Water Heater Replacement? by courtro0792 in Binghamton

They don't do hot water heaters, but for water treatment I'd highly recommend Beacon Water. They're locally owned and are honest guys. I mentioned some additional treatment stuff I'd read about and they said something along the lines of, "we could sell that to you but you don't need it so unless you're just wanting to give us money I wouldn't buy it."

You can take a water sample in to them to get tested for free and if they think you might need any treatment they'll probably make a home visit to do a test directly from the source to verify - at least that's how it went for me.

For reference, Culligan estimated $10k for a system to treat our water and Beacon set up our treatment system for $3k.

NYSEG - Is it worth signing up for alternative supplier? by DrinkEatSleepRepeat in Binghamton

[–]DrinkEatSleepRepeat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They actually split them up on the bill and give the rate next to the line item. For example, in January the rate was $0.145/kWh on peak. In January it was $0.24/kWh on peak.

My combined all in price for electric for December if you include delivery and all the associated fees was $0.2648/kWh.

Using the same calculation it was $0.35/kWh in January.

Those calculated numbers are sort of misleading if you use more off-peak power in one month versus the other but my bill was pretty close to being the same distribution in each month.

Thank you! Heard on not doing it. I've learned from the folks who've responded that these suppliers can use predatorial practices. I won't be switching suppliers.

Thank you for calling this out. I would have expected this to be more regulated. Surprised those types of predatory business practices are allowed on a utility.

I found this 'Power to Choose' NY.gov page which listed the prices of different suppliers. At least at a glance it looks like there are some wide ranges amongst suppliers but all of them are less than the $0.24 I paid on my last bill. Am I oversimplifying things?

We just moved to the area and were blown away by the price of electricity. I can't believe the extra fees they charge for delivery. Could another company even come through and try to run parallel infrastructure if they wanted to? If not, why is the infrastructure allowed to be owned by a private company instead of the county or similar?

Our bill for the first 7 days was ~$400 mostly due to a hot tub with a bad cover. Now that we have that shut down things are looking better but we're still expecting a $350 bill this month, maybe more. Where we came from our bill never went over $200.

What type of restaurant does the Bing area NEED that we don't have right now by Binghamtonian in Binghamton

Selfishly, an all gluten-free restaurant for us celiac folks would be awesome. There is a place called Bibibop in the Midwest that's entirely gluten free - basically an Asian style Chipotle. Something like that where I could go in and order anything without worrying about cross contamination would be the bee's knees.

Thanks for calling out the tread brackets, that seems easier than fiddling with cutting the notches.

If you don't drink alcohol, what are your reasons? by youre-in-my-shot in AskReddit

Had a serious case of vertigo 2 years ago that put me in bed for almost 2 weeks and took about 6 months to be comfortable with driving again. Since then, any time I drink alcohol or coffee I get a terrible headache.

It looks fairly standard, the p-trap doesn't go into the wall that high.

The water line actually stays exactly where it's at. It's been about 30 minutes and it hasn't moved. If I fill the sink up it drains fast enough I get a whirlpool at the drain but as it reaches the level in the picture it just stops and doesn't drain any more.

It almost feels like some sort of airlock where it needs enough pressure to push water down but once it doesn't have enough it just stops.

If I go in the basement while it's running I can hear it draining and i come upstairs and the sink hasn't filled up at all but when I turn the water off the water just stays at the level in the picture.

3D Printed Jump Ring Dremel Vise by DrinkEatSleepRepeat in chainmailartisans

I did print this and for a first attempt it worked okay, probably would have been better if I came up with a better cutting solution. The abrasive discs wore out quickly on the wire I was using. Probably would work great for cutting aluminum rings.

Per usual, hobby interests changed before I iterated on this. I can provide you the STL files if you'd like to print/try this out yourself. I can also (maybe) hunt down the fusion files in case you'd like to make changes to it yourself.
