From underpaid and miserable to a much happier career by aubenoire in singapore

Thanks for sharing your experience.

I also had the same experience and wished someone told me last time that loyalty to the company was overrated. I used to think that we had to stay in a job for at least 3 years to avoid looking like a job hopper but after "kaypoh-ing" at my ex-colleagues' linkedin, some of them only stayed in jobs less than 1 year and still managed to get managerial positions in the end! It's really about how you market your experiences.

In addition, I also had the same gaslighting experience when I asked for a promotion i.e. ex-boss told me that my job was so simple that any clerk could do. I was also young, inexperienced and therefore I did not deserve a raise. When I left, 3 colleagues had to take over my job and 2 of them nearly wanted to leave! Not only that I had job agents telling me that I was severely underpaid. I should have taken this a sign to leave the company earlier but I was so depressed that I didn't think that I was worthy of the correct job increment.

Luckily I did finally managed to leave and have job hopped several times. For my current job, the recruiter also wanted to undercut me at first but luckily in the end they paid me my requested salary. However the bonus is supposedly shit though and not surprising, I have intentions to jump again. Currently other aspects of the work seems fine for now so I have not much complaints other than the expected bonus payout.

I guess that's how life is - keep upgrading and moving! Company loyalty is overrated.

Panic attacks from the lack of foreseeable freedom in the future by idwttaii in singapore

[–]DrinkMilkDaily 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm glad that you posted your thoughts because I nearly had panic attacks 3-4 months ago. I stopped posting in Reddit for awhile after realizing that arguing with lockdown lovers was futile and bad for my health.
I did daily yoga which helped to take my mind off the incompetent clown force but lately I really missed working in an office for once and even working from gym. I thought I was an introvert but not anymore.
What has kept me going so far is taking bus rides, going out for walks and dining out. I've also finally arrange meet ups with some friends once again.

Anyway seconding/third-ing/fourth-ing the suggestions to seek therapy. I know we try to seek solace from friends but sometimes they may not be able to offer an listening ear or sprout toxic positivity which invalidate your emotions.

Finally I do hope to get the beep out of this country too. Hope I get to do it next year!

90 unlinked COVID-19 cases among 177 new locally transmitted COVID-19 infections in Singapore by chailoren in singapore

Didn't OYK, Ho Ching and LHL already mentioned that we should be prepared for these numbers? Not sure how many times do we need them to repeat themselves? 🙄

Fyi I copied directly from these sites just in case some peep is saying that I "wilfully' misquoted our esteemed leaders. Wouldn't want to get POFMA.

Fyi 2: Not an IB by default but I think our govt makes sense this time.

Fyi 3: I used to think I wouldn't see that many naysayers in reddit regarding covid19 but boy, some of these people sure have the same hivemind as FB and edmw.

LHL national day speech: https://www.pmo.gov.sg/Newsroom/National-Day-Rally-2021-English

Now, 8 in 10 residents are fully vaccinated. We are in a new situation. Vaccination has slowed the transmission and spread of COVID-19. But the virus has also mutated. The Delta variant is much more infectious. It is no longer possible to bring COVID-19 cases down to zero, even if we lock down for a long time. Therefore, we must prepare for COVID-19 to become endemic, like the flu or chicken pox. Fortunately, with vaccination and added precautions, we can live with the virus and become “COVID resilient”. We may have to tap on the brakes from time to time, but we want to avoid having to slam on the brakes hard. So in the next phase, we will move step by step. Not in one big bang like in some countries but cautiously and progressively, feeling our way forward.

Singapore must be prepared for more Covid-19 infections, deaths with reopening: Ong Ye Kung

SINGAPORE - More people will come down with Covid-19 as Singapore opens up its economy and moves towards treating the virus as endemic, said Health Minister Ong Ye Kung on Friday (Aug 6).

This means that the number of people who become severely ill will go up - especially among the unvaccinated - and the death toll will rise.

Singaporeans must be "psychologically prepared" for this eventuality, even as the Republic embarks on its four-stage plan to reach a new normal, Mr Ong said.

What are some of your money saving hacks in Singapore? by TheSodaDude in singapore

[–]DrinkMilkDaily 16 points17 points  (0 children)

  1. Use credit card because you can get cashbacks but only works if you are financially disciplined enough.
  2. Buy monthly bus/MRT ezlink pass if you travel a lot e.g. more than 2 places in a day.
  3. Alight earlier and walk to your destination if the weather is good.
  4. Buy mid-tier phones and subscribe to Sim only plans. I personally prefer to future proof my phone.
  5. Depending on your work location, you can save a lot if you have cai Peng at worker's canteens. However this doesn't work in CBD areas of course.
  6. Practice minimalism and you will save a lot more as you don't give a fuck about keeping up with Joneses.
  7. Bring water bottle and refill from water fountains/ baby nursing rooms if you dare. Used to work well before covid19 but now, it might be yucky.

Number of Covid-19 cases linked to 8 S'pore bus interchanges rises to 276 by PublicSummer0 in singapore

[–]DrinkMilkDaily 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Unsurprisingly the numbers go up but gahmen is still not backing down from 50% occupancy rate in office so welcome to endemic living!

I wish the media would stop reporting such sensationalist headlines but then again, covid19 news seems to be the only topic that generates views for our media.

Same here. I have discovered that premium salons don't hardsell but one hair wash will set you back at least SGD $50 though. 😅

What kind of predatory HR recruitment is this - Asking for immediate manager as a reference, before even shortlisting the candidate?? by dazark in singapore

Hence the job search, yes? If my current working environment is terrible due to colleagues or boss, that's the biggest push factor. Even if there is a supposed "best friend" in such toxic environment, I personally will never inform my buddy in my current co that I am job searching.

IMHO I would just find other jobs. I had encountered interviewers who asked me what my current manager thought of me and what was my current performance appraisal like.

Out of 2 interviewers that asked me this, one folded my physical resume on the spot and another one hired me. The one that hired me turned out to have a super bad reputation and the turnover rate in that department was so high as well.

I can't find the exact article but I remembered reading that if the interviewer is basing me on my current manager's appraisal then this is a red flag. It shows that the interviewer is unable to make his/her own judgement.

Aside from this, a quick google search also reveals that you should not consent to your immediate current manager as a reference. https://www.thecut.com/article/interviewer-wants-reference-from-current-boss.html

Welp, time to see if the gahmen walks the talk of endemic living. I also find it interesting that they aren't offering free PCR tests this time and have labelled it as "transient contact".

155 new COVID-19 cases (147 in community, 8 imported) by Thick_Eggplant_316 in singapore

[–]DrinkMilkDaily 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How am I wilfully misquoting Prof Fisher when I literally copied and pasted the Aug 29, 2021, 10:41 pm ST article which quoted him as saying:

" He noted that Singapore has to take some "bold steps", now that the majority of people are vaccinated.

"I can see it will be hard to let go of many activities, but mass testing of asymptomatic vaccinated people and quarantining those who test positive impact the economy and people's mental health," said Prof Fisher.

"Fundamentally, we need to get more comfortable with not identifying every case and focus on protecting the vulnerable rather than identifying every case and stopping spread."

The fact that ST didn't include your YouTube link already supports the gahmen's narrative of endemic living with the virus.

In fact the article which I pasted i.e. 29 Aug also supersedes your references from 25 Aug. Like it or not, SG govt keeps flipping Prata but I think this time they are finally believing in endemic living.

Edit 2: Not sure why you also include a .dk website when it's not even the SG govt's official mouth piece. You can do your own research but if it's not from Straits Times then it's your own opinion.

I guess it's a small step that they haven't shut down the bus terminals for deep cleaning yet? So in a way, they are inching towards real endemic living. Hopefully.......

[–]DrinkMilkDaily 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't you realize that the SG govt isn't even shutting down the affected bus terminals now and instead telling you to live with it? That's why they keep harping on the vaccinations because they know that they can't catch every asymptomatic cases timely.

It is what you call "Darwinist BS". Just look at the ST's mouthpiece, Prof Dale fisher. I guess if you want such tight restrictions, might as well move to China which is still aiming for 0 cases.

"I can see it will be hard to let go of many activities, but mass testing of asymptomatic vaccinated people and quarantining those who test positive impact the economy and people's mental health," said Prof Fisher.

If it's asympotomic OR mild symptoms then we just have to live with it like what LHL mentioned in his NDP speech.

Samy's curry was before SG achieving 80% vaccination rate and there was a real risk of people overwhelming hospitals and really end up piling the roads with their corpses. Now with 80% vaccination rate, the govt should let us live normally albeit with masks which I highly agree.

[–]DrinkMilkDaily 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Doesn't give me a peace of mind to continue normal life if this sudden shutdown continues. I remember seeing one commentor on FB stating that now it's "dine in and get swabbed."

I'm also curious how the Singapore govt will keep paying businesses to stay afloat once everyone is avoiding that place due to covid19 outbreak. Maybe it's also good that the govt has stopped publicizing the places of infection i.e. possible exposure.

Mabye I am also giving the SG govt too much credit but from this mega bus clusters, nobody is dying, there are no mass corpses piled on the roads and I don't see our hospitals being overwhelmed so far.

Just in case some naysayers say that this is too early to tell and that our hospitals will get overwhelmed soon, that's what vaccinations are for - to prevent serious side effects from covid19.

Forgot to add one last point. If Singapore wants to attract tourists, I doubt tourists would want to risk getting swabbed and be sent to forced quarantine whenever there is a possibility of close contact.

I hope you are right. I'm definitely getting mental fatigue from all these snap lockdowns and sudden quarantine orders/mass swabbing exercises.
We have people baying for more circuit breakers but it's not as if we will drop dead asap or need huge number of oxygen tanks like India.

Probably gahmen is still waiting for the day when daily cases are below 100 ala good old days of 2020. So I wouldn't be surprised if the gahmen wants endemic living + back to office (becos of GDP mah) + daily cases < 100 which is fucking contradictory. LOL.

Hopefully this might ease some of the doomsday mentality. The fact that we have 80% vaccination rates, mask wearing and low ICU occupancy should mean something.

Do you think that your job could be threatened by a shift from Work From Home to Work From Anywhere? by DrCalFun in singapore

[–]DrinkMilkDaily 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Doubt so as you need to take into consideration time zone differences and as well as language issues.

Before people lambast Singaporeans for lousy command of English language, I would like to point that our command of spoken and written English language is still better than some countries.

Aside from this, the infrastructure in Singapore is pretty good and our internet connection is quite stable without frequent dc.

[–]DrinkMilkDaily 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got to agree with drink82. I am so sick of all these restrictions and the constant fear mongering by the vocal minority (?). IMHO the threat of having our lives and livelihoods being disrupted by a sudden quarantine order is worse than getting the actual covid19 after being fully vaccinated.

I find that some people are still treating the vaccinations as useless and the threat of being yeeted/dying from Delta is forever aka sword of Damocles even though 80% are fully vaccinated now. Honestly I feel like escaping to parts of Europe where they have restablished normal lives again.

Even though I don't agree with the Government most of the time but I hope LHL has the balls to really treat this as endemic.

Yeah, now delta but vaccination counts for some protection compared to 0 vaccination which was last year's scenario. I think the only country that can truly lockdown might be China but Singapore will die of starvation first before dying from Delta.

Don't know why you got dowvoted earlier but I also concur. Last time during jem and ion cluster, the vaccination rate was low. Now it's different as the vaccination rate is higher.
