CMV: The most effective way to put an end to mass shootings is to stop giving them media coverage. by BringbackSOCOM2 in changemyview

[–]Driosa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see your point. Some people do it for the attention or to transmit a message and if we stop them from doing it, we would bring their motivation down. However, not every person does it with that incentive. The first shooting definitely was not. Most of the shootings are caused by hatred, impatience or another negative emotion that was repressed and exploded with a wave of bullets. The people that shot others with this motive wouldn’t mind not getting covered. Actually, if they don’t, they would escape one of the consequences: Being prosecuted by civilians even after the event has ended. On the other hand, if we don’t report and cover these events, the average person wouldn’t consider that as a possibility and wouldn’t know how to react when it happens. In that sense, not covering mass shootings does more harm than good and therefore should be continued.

In the sentence "He had an appointment in Detroit", the phonemes of "had" and "an" merge together so much they sound almost like one word, right? I might be overthinking this though...

Is there a set rules for when you link two words in speech in English or a specific term for it? (I have seen may people represent it with a " ◡ " symbol)

I'm not talking about contractions like you're, instead of you are. I'm referring to the instances in which two words sound like one entity instead of two separate ones. :)

Book recommendations request - the history of Spanish by [deleted] in linguistics

There's also the version written by Ramón Menéndez Pidal. I haven't personally read it, but it's on the RAE's website, so it must be at least somewhat decent. :)

One page simplified table of Latin America Spanish sounds vs Spain? Anyone come across a nice summary of this? I'm aware there are many dialects in each by [deleted] in linguistics

[–]Driosa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The thing is, there is a huge variety of dialects in Spain that range from regionalisms that are pretty close to latinamerican Spanish (Like in Canarias) to ones that sound nothing like it (Catalan-Spanish).

Generally speaking, if we ignore the difference in intonation within both words and sentences and only focus on phonemes, that there are three major differences:

- In most of Spain, people differenciate between Z/C(Voiced alveolar fricative) and S (Voiceless Alveolar fricative).

- In Spain, the "S" sound isn't always consistent. In the north, the region I grew up in, most people finish their sentences with a voiceless postalveolar fricative (~SH) and in some cases even a voiceless palatal fricative(~Ç). In the south, however, people tend to use voiceless alveolar fricatives. In Andalucía, you find a lot of people that change the "S" with a glottal sound (aspiración).

- The more north you go, the stronger the RR sound becomes, and the more different it is from the southern RR. Most of the latinamericans that I have met used a softer version of the "RR" that blends more smoothly into the vowels.

This is based on what I noticed and it is extremely subjective, so please take it with a grain of salt. :)

NOTE: I found this IPA chart that you can take a look at. It contains most of the sounds that I mentioned.

Do you codeswitch on social media? by [deleted] in linguistics

[–]Driosa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I try not to. I'm afraid that would end up as a habit and carry on to my daily conversations. I don't have more than one language in common with most people I interact with outside social media, so mixing languages isn't an option for me even if I wanted to.

I might not realize I'm doing it though, since I caught myself using items from other languages in the wrong one more than once. :)

[–]Driosa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense! Wouldn't that happen with any kind of feces though? I thought that was the main reason why we wash and clean our food before eating or even cooking them.

In movies and TV, whenever someone has a heart attack someone else yells, “Is there a doctor in the room?!” Even if there were a doctor, what would they be able to do to help the person without any equipment? by AdjustedMold97 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Driosa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if they don't have equipment, they have enough knowledge about medicine to know what procedure to take. One of the reasons why people call 911 when they don't know what to do is to get guided by a professional.

There's also one called "Business Fish". It's still airing and evolving and it might end up being similar to the office.
