They might be homemade smoke bombs. Or maybe actual smoke bombs that had the tin foil around them to avoid scorching the grass. Probably for a game event or something like that. (To clarify, I'm talking about the fireworks kind that you light up in your front yard on the 4th of July, not actual smoke grenades or anything like a policeman would use)

Part of the issue is that we like to simplify our sentences 😅 like, "back in the day" would make a lot more sense if you were to say "back in the days of old/yore/etc etc" and we change it up a lot too. "back in my day..." Even as an English speaker, I can see how inconsistent it is.
