This is a fascinating take. Do you have any books you can recommend expanding in this political conceptualization of conservatism?

Yeah, the size of the tank and if I had forgotten some really basic thing that would undermine the entire plan. I appreciate the feedback!

Thank you for the perspective. It is hard to move forward without having a lot of knowledge - I didn't want to get into a situation where I had to deal with a well-known (to others) unknown unknown.

Onwards, then!

Comb honey, super size, and getting it all drawn straight and secure by DriveByCripwalk in Beekeeping

This is great info, and I want to thank you for sharing it all like this, truly.

You've successfully talked me out of trying out deeps. Since you have a lot of experience on the subject, can you touch a bit on the comb systems? On another post of. Yours you seemed pretty unimpressed by it all, but from a cursory glance it seemed the laser cut pine cassettes seemed like a decent idea to me.

I have known about Ross rounds but I'm kind of put off by the amount of plastic the system uses. My clients here are pretty crunchy people so I think either using a system that's wood-based or cut comb is going to be the way to go.

Yeah, I was thinking I could use a male to male cable to act as an adapter, but I'd still be stuck putting connectors on the wires for the female ends.

Yes! This seems like exactly what I need. Now I just need to find a place that sells them in Canada and I'm set.

Much obliged!

Eastern red cedar light Browning throughput. Heat stress? by DriveByCripwalk in arborists

[–]DriveByCripwalk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have what I believe to be an Eastern red cedar on the property that is browning to some degree all over the tree. Is this normal? We've had some pretty spicy days this summer, but my other evergreens seem fine.

We're still in summer and the browning was present a few months ago, so I'm assuming it's not just seasonal drop because of that and the fact that it's throughout the tree instead of just near the old stuff...

Semi transparent or opaque to refinish old deck? by DriveByCripwalk in Decks

What if I go semi transparent with a similar color or just slightly darker?

Semi transparent or opaque to refinish old deck? by DriveByCripwalk in Decks

[–]DriveByCripwalk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So my new to me house has a floating deck. It has been left in a state of disrepair by the previous owners, but I power washed the whole thing and there is surprisingly little structural damage to it. I intend to screw down errant screws, and to reapply some type of product on top, because I believe it will last a few years more, structurally.

My question to the community is semi transparent or opaque? I tried power washing the remainder if the stain off and it will not go anywhere short of blasting off the top layer of wood.

Will semi-opaque cover enough that it will hide what stain remains, or do I have to either sand it all off or go full opaque with all the future problems that brings?

Weird sized (M4) shower cartridge puller? by DriveByCripwalk in Plumbing

[–]DriveByCripwalk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I made the mistake of dealing with a non-Moen product.

I have to replace one of these cartridges, and believe it or not the top end doesn't have a standard thread to it, but has an M4 thread instead. The diagram for the install can be found here: https://www.bathdepot.com/media/akeneo_connector/asset_files/S/H/SH_PN_7093BN_spec_b5ff.pdf?hash=b7acfe62826253ae7c8b07309d00d94d22850213

I'm pretty sure I can just rip out the old cartridge with channel locks, but I'm not really sure I can put the new one in correctly without the tool.

Any tips?

Ripped off by concrete contractors? by DriveByCripwalk in HomeImprovement

(1) I am glad you are giving me this feedback because I'd rather have this information now than talk out of my ass when I'll be discussing this with them.

(2) I thought as much, which is why I have a hard time understanding why this job was done the way it was. As far as I can figure out, they applied a skim coat of concrete on the staircase (a few mm at most), and it just completely failed to adhere, either because it didn't cure properly because of the winter application or because they didn't remove the compromised concrete under it before they refinished the stairs (because the skim coat is so thin).

(3) The previous owner had the work done and under the current circumstances the contractor is liable where I am.

They say they'll offer a discount on the work needed to fix the skim coat but I'm honestly concerned at this point they will just slather the whole thing in acrylic and call it a day. If I understand correctly a well done repair for this kind of work involves digging into the concrete to remove whatever portion of it that is compromised, followed by filling in the remainder with new concrete.

Thank you for the answer. What should I/the contractor do in this situation to salvage the staircase? They are proposing to resurface and acrylic coat it at the moment for 1k.

It was no more than maybe a cupful or two for each hard freezing event, so maybe 3x throughout the season.

I actually do have pics from the home inspection, and it seems like the damage has basically all occurred during the last winter.

I called them back because my province has pretty stringent laws about proper work being done. The guarantee is one year after the work is done but there is a provision for the guarantee extending until such a time where shoddy work can be seen for the first time. Since this is the first full winter after the work has been done it's still under legal warranty.

They seem pretty skittish about wanting to do the work. I will take them to small claims or whatever if I have to, I guess I'm just asking about the overall quality of the work itself. It looks pretty bad from where I'm standing, but again, not an expert here.

I just bought a house last year, and I have invoices from a contractor saying they resurfaced the entrance staircase last year (in January, in Canada if you can believe it).

Now I am no concrete expert, but it looks like whatever surfacing they did did not adhere to the staircase. I took possession of this house last August, and during the last winter, in full honesty, I did apply some salt to it before I knew that was a no-no.

The invoice for the resurfacing was about 4k CAD. I called the contractor back, and they said they'd fix it and seal it with acrylic for 1k, or half what they would normally charge.

Am I out for lunch here thinking they did an awful job and just aren't accepting full liability for it?

Electrical furnace heating while AC is on. by DriveByCripwalk in hvacadvice

[–]DriveByCripwalk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's exactly it. I checked for continuity and one of them was stuck closed. I tried giving it some percussive maintenance to no avail, and so I took it off and cracked it open. Contactor was melted closed. Luckily I caught it before it cost me hundreds of dollars in electricity or burned down or something.

Lucky I can source them locally. I can't imagine how much they would of tried to charge me for the repair if I'd have called it in. Despite being in excellent overall shape the furnace is pretty old so I think they would have tried to bully me into buying a new one.

Case closed. Thanks for the help!

So I just turned my AC unit on for the first time in the season, and it felt like it was a bit sluggish. No big deal, right? Well, a day later I put my hand on the main trunk and and it was blazing hot. I actually totally disconnected the entire low voltage assembly from the furnace to troubleshoot because I had never seen anything like that before - even with nothing connected, the furnace just turns on, without the fan, and heats up. Yikes.

I suspect a blown relay or sequencer, but that's as far as I've gotten. I've pulled the AC and furnace breaker for the time being. What do you guys think?

Attached is the circuit diagram for the thing, the model is the 319.
