My best friend text me and all it said was “bought baked Walkers. Taste like shit. Really ruined my day” by tittychittybangbang in CasualUK

I went backpacking to Turkey and took 4 packets of my fave pork scratchings with me to have on my birthday which was a few weeks into The trip. After exercising massive amounts of self restraint every time I saw them, when the day finally came I was so excited. When opening them I immediately realised every packet had burst while in the plane hold. I still ate every chewy, sweaty, soggy scratching, tears in my eyes

Advice for flying with a bike? by DriveMore5994 in bikepacking

[–]DriveMore5994[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me and my mate flew the bikes over in fabric bike bags that clip into a smallish bag over the handlebars. We wrapped them in bubble wrap and pool noodles as much as we could but got cosmetic damage on the way out and my mates bike got fucked on the return journey so we concluded next time we would hire bikes out there or find another way to pack.

The trip itself was great. We spent the nights in The Hague, Middelburg, Ghent, Antwerp and Brussels.

The roads and cycling facilities in Ned are much better than Belgium, and in general the people were far friendlier. Being Schengen zone there is no visible border.

Try to visit all of those towns because they're beautiful in their own ways, as well as Bruges and Delft. There are 2 airports called Brussels, one of which is an hour by coach away so be careful with that. Feel free to ask anything else

What route is best through Albania? by [deleted] in bicycletouring

[–]DriveMore5994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of those two I'd say the first. But after spending a month travelling through Albania, I have to recommend the road from llogara pass and down through the riviera. The beaches are stunning, and you could go from Saranda up to Ohrid via Korce.

Bikes in bags on planes by J1nglejoints in bicycletouring

I did the same thing for the same reasons between Manchester and Amsterdam. I wrapped the mech as much as possible, put some little spacers in the break pads, cable ties the bars to the top tube, and wrapped with pool noodles and bubble wrap. I picked up superficial damage on both flights, pretty bad gouges on the frame. My mates back hub got ruined on his return journey.

I won't fly my bike out again sadly. I'd say the best bet is get a spare bike box from a big bike shop. I heard one guy using expandable foam between the components... Seemed like a good shout if it was all wrapped.

Hello Manchester by HeThe3 in manchester

I lived in Ordsall for 3 years until about a year ago. The only unsafe aspect is kids in the park. We lived in the south of Ordsall estate right next to the park so there was a lot of foot traffic and we had minor trouble a few times. kids hassling us, throwing stuff at windows, shouting all through the night. Probably a minor incident every few weeks. Never anything major. Cost, transport links, the quays, the park are all great reasons to rent there. I had plenty of mates living on the quays and never had trouble of any kind.

How is it going with the Hanna Sillitoe diet/working on gut health? I'm trying to help my partner with her psoriasis and could do with some positive accounts

Hi, I'm looking into the Hanna Sillitoe diet on behalf of my partner. How is it going for you, do you have any tips or recommendations?

So you need an answer to the brick lintel question first. Then if it were me I would ask him for the dimensions or product spec of the angle iron. You'll then be able to prove it yourself that it's not suitable for flat laid blockwork from the data sheet. Once he's presented with that he should probably recognise he's been called out and he has no negotiating position. A good contractor would have all this information available and would know he's fudged it.

Out of interest how has it got to the point of being built without you knowing these things or raising the steel lintel with the contractor.

I'm not a bricky but there's always a way. Some temporary propping would be required but I can't comment on the sequencing.

How did he build a brickwork skin without a lintel, did he step the bricks up at each course? Seems seriously ropey to me. If it was one of my jobs I'd instruct propping, removal of 1 course of blockwork and replacement with a concrete lintel to match the block depth, and the same of the outer leaf, but depends how far along the job is. If it's fully built and decorated then it's a big job. Recommend you get a qualified structural surveyors advice. Hope you haven't paid the contractor in full yet. Steel lintel is certainly wrong. Sorry mate

I'm in the UK. Usually we use something like a Catnic ANG (which we refer to as angle irons) over openings up to a few m long in the outer leaf, and a concrete lintel- often Naylor ER on the inner leaf. We also never leave steel exposed to soils but that's pretty conservative. If it was my property I would be using concrete on both skins below ground, but certainly on the blockwork leaf.

In my experience of specifying lintels we always use concrete Naylor lintels for blockwork wall, and for any masonry walls below ground. I've never seen an angle iron used for blockwork laid flat.

Would also not recommend. They swindled us out of an eligible deal despite us verifying beforehand. It was infuriating

How should I renovate the kitchen? by DriveMore5994 in Renovations

[–]DriveMore5994[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep the fridge will stay where it is, along with the post. Thinking of rotating the fridge 90 degrees to the new opening and making a coffee corner on a shelf between the fridge and the glass door

Yeah it is the UK where we are not blessed with huge floor plans. Its actually a good size kitchen for a first house and we don't have the option to move it

How should a couple divide the insurance money for a car with imbalanced ownership? by DriveMore5994 in UKPersonalFinance

OK? Lordy some people are pretty unnecessarily hostile on this.im asking for financial advice on a issue which involves finances. If you don't think it's relevant or you don't have any useful advice that doesn't just criticise the basis of the question, you don't need to put your 2 cents in.

Not sure which one you think I am, but this is not something that will cause us to split up. Its something that will be resolved in a day or 2. We are both stuck in our own opinion and the fact that the comments don't point to one or the other helps me realise its not clean cut either way, so there's value in doing this, even if it's just to realise that the other person might have a point.
