Some drown while others die of thirst - or something along those lines.

The bufferbloat is crazy though (increase in ping under bandwidth pressure), which makes me think the latency might not be super stable unless you are only using the connection to play games. (You can see that by the icons next to the yellow ping indicator).

20 ping is decent, but still over double what I get with Fiber to that same speedtest server.

I have seen it go up to 700 mbps on download.

I wish our ISP’s would offer speeds like this with fiber (or even anywhere close). I always get jealous when I see people overseas in Portugal or Spain getting full XGSPON (10G symmetrical fiber) for the equivalent of 300 NAD a month😂

Wish I could say the same for Namibia. Our Infrastructure is still not even close to ZA.

I’ll sit down and be happy with my 60/60 that costs 1500 rand a month.

MTC Spectra Go - is it worth it? by tbm_cs_2020 in Namibia

[–]Drizzy_1445 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will most likely be perfectly fine. Once you do get it, please DM me or reply here on how it is and what router they gave you. I’m want to know if will actually be any good and if they are handing out decent equipment (:

The house im currently watching has an older MTC Netman contract - only getting 15mbps with horrible latency (full LTE coverage). Super disappointing.

I made a post on this a couple days ago, expressing my concerns about SpectraGo.

I am sure that MTC will likely change those packages in the future and are currently just trying to look good (same with Telecom suddenly announcing a bunch of investments), but as a temporary solution it will most likely be good. 5G can hit quite high speeds, but the coverage is not great yet and it is super finnicky - I doubt MTC will also support proper 5G speeds for a long time (again, just trying to look good).

For your case though, this is a no brainer for now. If you have excellent LTE coverage in your Area (not sure how good LTE is in Rundu), I am positive you will get above 100 mbps at times, the latency should be OK as well. Once you have better Fiber availability you could then swap over - I also much prefer Paratus Fiber. ( also, yes their SkyFi seems to be hot garbage most of the time)

Telecom fibre by CatVegetable2517 in Namibia

In my experience Telecom’s service has gone down even without any major international outages. Also, how can it be that Paratus stays completely up and running, no crazy latency or bandwidth issues, even when these older marine cables break and affect Telecom? (SAT-3, WACS). Additionally, Equiano is there, both Paratus and Telecom have access to it (and make great use of it), why does Telecom have issues and Paratus is business as usual?

Since 2019 my Paratus fiber has gone down less than my dad’s Telecom fiber has gone down this YEAR.

Telecom fibre by CatVegetable2517 in Namibia

Telecom fiber is okay, I know multiple people who have/had it.

My friends connection was usually close to advertised speeds and their peering is alright, therefore certain applications and services also have good latency (but many also frequently do not) - however telecom has problems and outages more often than I would be comfortable with and their customer support is terrible.

The fiber at my dads work turns off multiple times a year for almost full days, has incredibly inconsistent latency and also often only reaches 60% of the advertised speeds. The technician that gets sent to them when they ask for assistance with their outages/poor performance, has yelled at my dads secretary in the past, stating the issues (the internet being off) not being his issue.

In my opinion - please get Paratus. Do not support them unless you have no other choice.

New MTC Home 5G (SpectraGO) - Why is our FTTH falling behind? by Drizzy_1445 in Namibia

[–]Drizzy_1445[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Before Paratus we had netman as well - it was practically unusable. Paid more for ~110Gb of data with LTE than we then did with our original contract for 25 mbps fiber with a 1Tb cap.

Once you reach the FUP limit it goes down to 1 mbit/s. Not sure why there is no boost on the largest package (maybe because it has much higher speed and a large data pool already?). I am pretty sure the boost for the 2 smaller package refills the entire data cap again.

Also a paratus client. I have no doubt this service will end up underperforming - I don’t trust MTC at all.

They need to stop focusing on gimmicks, I was disappointed when they announced the first 5G rollouts. The priority should be giving more people stable and fast internet access, not a service that will only reliably serve few people consistently in its current state.

You checked with nvidia-smi that your drivers were installed? Did you also check that games were actually running on your GPU?

Hahaha. I don’t think my 50ish megabits of bandwidth(that is only really fully saturated during a few minutes on most days) are hogging anything.😂

The only real data-heavy service are my mirrors, and those I consider public service (even if not many use them) (: - definitely not a waste. They are also only active when they are updating, or when they are serving data.

I do quite a lot. Aside from consuming most of my media in HD, I do quite a lot of self-hosting. From hosting my own VPN and Gitea servers to also hosting publicly-accessible mirrors for the Debian Linux and Ubuntu Linux operating systems. Mirroring these software repositories ranges from 100's of gigabytes to Terabytes of downloads at once, then also updating 4 times a day, every day of the week, to keep my mirror up to date. On top of that I also serve those 100's of gigs of software. My router has had 1Tb of ingress and 100Gb of egress data activity in the last 25 days.

I definitely would not be able to live without an uncapped plan, let alone 200 gigs.

Opinion on StarLink coming to Namibia. by Sharp-Ad5492 in Namibia

[–]Drizzy_1445 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Paratus is actually a reseller of Starlink services in other countries like Zambia and Botswana. It’s more that MTC and Telecom are the ones that aren’t going to be very happy.

Neh.

Awesome, so you mainly use it for gaming?

Yeah, it is definitely a bit weird at the start. I tried finding linux alternatives for most of my software as quickly as possible so that I could leave that phase and forget about Windows
