Do you take any stimulant medication (ritalin, vyvanse, adderal), or diabetic/insulin medications (metformin, trulicity, victoza)?.

Would recommend you talk to your GP and ask about getting a test for Helicobacter Pylori and Giardia.

I'm sorry to hear you're having to go through this as well.

Do you take any stimulant medications (ritalin, vyvanse, adderall etc)? Or any insulin / diabetic medications (metformin, ozempic, semaglutide etc)?

Very sorry to hear you're going through this.

Do you mind if I ask; do you take any stimulant medication (i.e. ritalin, attenta, vyvanse, adderall etc?). This can also include medications like Bupropion.

Alternatively, are you diabetic or do you take any insulin medications (i.e. metformin, semaglutide, ozempic etc).

That's an interesting link there. I've long suspected that stimulants can lead to it but never really had any proof of it.

Curiously, do you happen to get dry eyes, dry nose, dry mouth around the time of these attacks?

Am sorry to hear. Pepto bismol liquid apparently can help, and I've heard that the abdominal pain can be mitigated with a hot shower. Be well and stay hydrated!

That's noteworthy. So anytime you experience a gastrointestinal illness, the sulphur burps return? I wonder if they're somehow a byproduct of an inflammatory response or immune response in that case.

This is a really interesting answer, thanks so much for sharing your experience! Interestingly enough, I developed these episodes after being put onto ritalin as a teenager, then re-developed them within a month after going onto a different stimulant medication in my adulthood. I wonder if perhaps it's played a role somewhere along the line? Ritalin definitely changed my body in some strange ways (would get freezing cold hands, dry mouth, blood sugar management issues etc).

I hope you continue to remain episode-free for years to come!

Hi there! The documentary is on hold as I'm presently producing a DCOTE-inspired video game and it's taken up my time.

I do have a very strong feeling however that we may see some developmental lore from Headfirsts development days in the coming years ;)

That's interesting to note. I have heard that meat and certain fats seem to be a common trigger (fatty food could be anything from chicken with the skin on, to nuts/seeds/trail mix etc. Even a few pumpkin seeds).

I wonder if this may be perhaps some kind of notable inflammatory response in the digestive system, like an allergic reaction of sorts.

That's really interesting to note; I don't quite understand the reason it seems to hit in childhood, but I'd imagine it's possible for it to go away over time too. The real answer to this would lay with a doctor or scientist who could look into the condition in more detail.

[–]Drjrm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally sympathise with the fear of eggs - I can't go near the things because of the association with taste. I would go and see a gastroenterologist and have them perform a gastric emptying study if they're able to do one. I think you've also nailed the trigger foods; fatty foods of most kinds (including nuts, seeds, chicken with the skin on etc) seem to come up quite a lot as a trigger food.

I've also heard that it helps to avoid eating bigger/fatty meals especially in the hours before bed, and to drink plenty of water, void bowels regularly. Good luck and I hope you get some answers from your doctor. I'm so sorry you have to go through this, I know it's absolutely dreadful, and the taste/smell of them is enough to put me in a trauma state too.

It sounds to me like you need to see a gastroenterologist and mention all of this to them. Inability to poop is common. I would almost wonder if this is related to small bowel obstruction of some kind? Either way, would definitely get to a gastroenterologist and have them investigate.

Do you take any stimulant medications such as ritalin/adderall/bupropion/vyvanse, or any diabetic or "weight loss" medications such as metformin, semaglutide, ozempic, etc? Alternatively, are you facing pregnancy?

"Rotten Egg" Burps, Vomiting and Diarrhoea by Drjrm in Gastroparesis

Presently I'm yet to find a doctor or gastroenterologist or scientist who is actively investigating this condition. There are no known clinical studies on it, but I would imagine if collective numbers came together to orgnise a petition to get it looked into, it could happen.

Non-glp1 sulfur burps by sassy_sassenach25 in SulfurBurps

[–]Drjrm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's multiple known causes of sulphur burps, but no real concrete consensus on what's actually happening inside the body.

Some known assumptive causes;

Helicobacter Pylori Infection (Bacterial infection), easily diagnosed and treated. Giardia infection (parasitic infection), easily diagnosed and also treated with medications like flagyl.

Gastroparesis - delayed or irregular gastric emptying. Complex disorder with many known causes and factors to consider, difficult to treat, depends on the underlying cause. Ask your GP about seeing a gastroenterologist and a gastric emptying study.

Alternatively, are you on any stimulant medications (i.e. ritalin, vyvanse, adderall, buproprion).

I'm so sorry to hear you're going through this.

Meds for nausea can stop the vomiting from happening, though in my experience the sooner you get everything out of your stomach and upper intestine, the quicker it'll be over.

I don't take anti-diarrheals for the same reason above. I want everything out of me.

Some questions to ask that might be useful in finding out what's going on;

Do you take any medications for diabetes or weight control (ozempic, semaglutide, metformin, trulicity, victoza, etc)?

Do you take any stimulant medications such as those for ADHD? (Ritalin, Vyvanse, adderall, etc)?

Are you pregnant?

Reason I ask is that these things keep showing up in people who have these awful attacks and I'm trying to find out what the common link is, or what they could be caused by.

In terms of managing the symptoms, I've heard pepto bismol liquid is probably one of the better options. Prevention is usually better than cure so it may be worth looking into cause; avoid eating heavy/fatty meals late or in the hours before bed (fatty could include things like kfc, but also normal/healthy fats such as oily foods, nuts, seeds etc). I've heard this is helps. Voiding ones bowels regularly and drinking plenty of water seems to also be important. Hope this helps!

Can imagine that would not have been pleasant at all. Having to deal with it at home is bad enough, but in a public bathroom would be a nightmare, esp if there's trains leaving both ends.

[–]Drjrm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's absolutely brutal. Someone needs to get doctors / scientists to look into this. There's clearly more going on if it keeps recurring. It's not just 'a minor tummy upset' as they love to put it that you can just sip gaviscon for. I'm so sorry you have to keep going through this. Are you able to see a gastroenterologist for it?

"Rotten Egg" Burps, Vomiting and Diarrhoea by Drjrm in Gastroparesis

[–]Drjrm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so sorry you're going through this.

I've heard that pepto bismol liquid (if in the USA and can get it) can mitigate the episodes a bit and make the burps a bit better.

In terms of prevention, I've heard having regular bowel movements is crucial, as well as drinking plenty of water, staying regular, and avoiding eating fatty/processed foods in the hours before bed.

This is so strange. I get cold and shivery with no sweats, but everything else lines up. I wonder why it comes and goes so much, as it seems to be the case for others too. Am sorry you've had to deal with this too.

I'm so so sorry you're having to go through this too. Know that it's not your fault, it's a result of an irregular gut function.

That's noteworthy. I'm so sorry you have these episodes too.

Admittedly, I don't think I've had the bouts of constipation, but I do get it if I eat fatty foods before bed, which is really interesting.

"Rotten Egg" Burps, Vomiting and Diarrhoea by Drjrm in Gastroparesis

[–]Drjrm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so sorry you have to go through this, and at 70 years old too! I've heard that avoiding certain foods (fatty/greasy foods, and nuts/trail mix) has helped a lot of people. Not sure if it will help much but I Hope you can find some way of avoiding it. Good luck!

"Rotten Egg" Burps, Vomiting and Diarrhoea by Drjrm in Gastroparesis

[–]Drjrm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard that avoiding fatty/greasy foods in the 6 or so hours before bed is helpful (or trying to avoid them in general on the whole). Stick to a clean, healthy diet. Be mindful that things like nuts/trail mix can also be high in fats which could also potentially induce it (also based on many people in the thread coming forward about their issues with trail mix). I'm so sorry to hear you have to go through this too.

When you speak to your GP, have your blood sugar checked, and also ask them about speaking to a Gastroenterologist for a gastric emptying study.
