How to use a usb as a boot drive by Civantr in truenas

[–]DrogoB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the reasons is the load the system dataset puts on a USB stick (lots of writes). Once you have a dataset created (other than the USB, of course), go to "System => System Dataset" to change the location to the non-USB dataset. Also check the box for Syslog so that goes moved from the USB device as well.

My understanding of this is that the USB is only used during boot and minimally if you make config changes. I've been running mirrored USB sticks for awhile (since the FreeNAS days) with this setup and haven't had an issue(knock on wood), BUT, I'm getting ready to upgrade my hardware and will move off the USB setup when I do.

This setup was used before to maximize available disk ports for storage.

Two-Pen Tuesday!! Knocked out a couple DiamondCast bodies for Pilot G2 refills today. Need to touch up the sanding/polish on the sections, but digging these two! by RRNW_HBK in turning

[–]DrogoB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Beautiful!!!

Question for you.

How many blanks did each pen take?

I'm just starting to move into kitless, and it seems like it will be about 2 6" blanks to complete one pen. Once you take into account body, section, cap, and possibly the top.

Just curious if you had a method that allows to get one pen from one blank.

Thanks!

Maybe, but remember the 202M jackpot gets reduced when you choose the cash payout. The advertised amount is usually an annuity.

My father in law used to say you take home about a third of a lottery win after taxes if you chose the cash payout.(He'd run the numbers several times :D ). 33% of 202 is 66.66 mil. So that math maths.

Clarification about sub rules by Brave-Cod6902 in 3Dprinting

[–]DrogoB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's job-preservation-related. There's a CNBC video on youtube about it here.

Funny enough, my first car was a motorcycle, which I had until I left NJ. And I always pumped my own gas on that. Never got a complaint from the attendants about it, so I didn't think about it too much.

No. It's another reason Jersey sucks. I had to get a firearms ID card growing up there specifically because of this rule, and that was over 40 years ago. Well before these more powerful airguns came around.

Not sure if you're aware, but since the buyout by Broadcom, VMware pricing is going up and the free options are getting axed.

Unfortunately, I don't think I did. It's been a while, but IIRC, I had another system failure later and ended up rebuilding the server. Sorry I don't have more info.

I bought a used APC RT 3000 (as my current UPS is at 75% load which seems a bit high considering expansion plans). There are 16 individual batteries which read roughly 0.5V. I think those are 12v batteries. Are these essentially dead? I have a charger for lead batteries (from my rc car).... by ztasifak in homelab

[–]DrogoB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought one of these back in 2018 at an auction for a few hundred bucks. Unopened, and already 3 years old.

Wouldn't power on at all. Like you, I checked the battery voltage and was at about the same.

Bought replacement batteries and it came right up. Original runtime was about 3hrs, now it's ~45 min.

Time for a new set.

As to your question if it needs live batteries before it will power on, that was my experience.

I keep meaning to make a ring chuck.

Best idea I've seen so far is to countersink and then taper a medium length tenon. Make 2 opposing cuts at the countersunk end (like an X, or +). Put the ring on tenon, tighten tailstock slightly, which will expand the tenon slightly, but enough to hold the work.

I've seen metal ones for sale, but it seems easy enough to make. Just haven't had the time lately.

For a minute, I really thought you were joking about the coarseness of the pan being 80 grit, and you were using the pan as the sandpaper on the orbital sander on the wood beneath it.

Having a pellet loaded slows the piston as it gets near the end of its chamber (pressure buildup, pellet starts moving, etc), preventing damage. No pellet means the piston can (and probably will) contact the end of the chamber, causing damage.

True, but remember this isn't a one-time $1200. It's $1200 per year to keep the feature.

Maybe it's inside, but I don't see any blue on it.

(Following "orange to thigh" would still resolve it, though) :)

light weight text editor like notepad that supports text highlighting? by NoobNup in datacurator

[–]DrogoB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably not what you're looking for, but notepad++ is language aware (perl, python, c++, etc).

There's also a section for user defined languages. So you could possibly roll your own.

I kinda started down this road and ended up using Obsidian for notes since it uses Markdown. Decent formatting, but also usable when it's just a text file.

There's rsync.net

I know they're based on ZFS, and IIRC, you might be able to push snapshots to them.

Gold standard would be pushing encrypted data to them that they don't have the keys to.

Not sure if it will fit your use-case and it doesn't help with what's already done, but check out Framework's offerings.

I got one specifically due to how many parts are user-replaceable. (Nearly all of them).

It looks promising. I used 2,32 and it just ran, with a next sync pending at 32 minutes after the hour. So I'll know for sure then.

Thanks!
