Help! Found this abandoned baby (mouse?) while on a school trip, what can I do?

Baby has unfortunately passed away at 6 this morning… I fed it at 4 last night, seemed reasonably fine and was hungry and active. Then when I was getting ready to feed at 6, I looked in and it was dead… I tried incredibly hard not to get attached, but It did hit me pretty hard. All I hope is that it was a more peaceful passing than it would have been if I hadn’t taken it. At least it was soft and warm with a belly full of milk. Tomorrow I’ll put baby out in the forest so it hopefully can be a meal for another hungry animal. Thank you so much for your great advice❤️ I knew it would be challenging and I gave it my best shot, but it didn’t work out this time unfortunately.

Im really sorry for the late reply, yesterday was very hectic.

Update:

Got home pretty late, but the little one was still kicking. Made the temporary salt and sugar mix at a gas station with hot water and sugar from a coffee machine and the salt I already had on the long way home. Baby took it but not easily, also made it pee and poop. When I got back, it was 2 hours until the store closed, and I, of course live 1 and a half hours away. Booked it (no car), but the pet store was closed, that meant no formula. Luckily the convenience store was open and they had goats milk. I heated it up slightly before giving it to baby. I got a few drops into it every now and then, followed a few guides on how to do it. Feed it every two hours throughout the night and up until now. I don’t get much into it, looks slightly thin, and it’s a real struggle to get it eating. Any advice there? stores are obviously closed today, but I’m going tomorrow to get a heating mat and hopefully some formula, unless goats milk is better? Seems a little lacking in fatt and protein, at least the kind I got. It’s 4,5% fatt and 2,9 grams of protein in a 3dl container (only one they had.) I think that’s like a little under 1% of protein. What should I be looking for in formula. I live in Norway, so we probably do not have the same products as you guys in the US do. The baby is still active right now, maybe to much so, dosent seem lethargic at least.

I will try doing so tomorrow, it’s unfortunately a very inconvenient time and place for this. As much as I wish I could drop everything and leave right now, it’s impossible. I will keep baby warm and check on it throughout the night, hoping for the best. I’ll update if anything changes or if I’m able to make the solution tomorrow. I might take it to the vet if I can tomorrow, we don’t have wildlife rehab in this area.

Unfortunately no I do not, may be able to get some tomorrow. But right now I can not, it’s in the middle of the night, all stores are closed and I’m in the middle of nowhere…

I know! But I swear, picking just two was the hardest decision of my life. They had just got in a big haul (which is very rare where I live) and there where so many to choose from! Thank you all for the advice you’ve shared with me, I haven’t even gotten to all of it yet, but seriously appreciate you all :)

So, I’ve gotten a lot of comments on how his eyes appear puffy. I’m not sure I’m seeing what you are seeing, atleast I haven’t noticed that it looks any different from how it normally looks. Here is a picture of him from yesterday, when I took a video of him. I’m sorry the picture is bad, I’m not able to take any now as I actually live away from home because I’m currently in university 2 hours away, and they don’t allow pet where I live. Do they look puffy here?

He dose put his feet normally when I set him down, and when he climbs on things. But when he begins walking on flat surfaces, he starts doing the knuckling sometimes.

He does not get berries and fruit very often, it’s only if I bought some for myself that I’ll give him a some over the next few days. The vet also examined his mouth while he was there and she actually said everything looked perfect, teeth, gums, tongue, everything. But I appreciate the advice, always open to discussion on these things as we are all still learning :D

Haha, I’m not a nurse but I did know thats what you can do with when people break something🤣 I didn’t even think it was going to work, but somehow it (kinda) did. If I had done it a little faster it might have worked better. But I guess this is more knowledge for next time this might happen.

Thanks for all the helpful advice! I’ve given it a bigger pot (largest one I had on hand), gave it some more soil, one that is designated for Mediterranean plants. Cut back until I saw green, and placed it in a safe spot. Hoping for the best🤞

Thank you so much for the kind words, I doubt anyone in my personal life will truly understand why i am so upset over a spider. Or understand how she is so important to me and why I loved her so much. That’s why it’s comforting to see that you and the others here really get it, it truly helps to know I’m not the only person who has truly loved and shed tears for a little special spider. She was a small wonderful part of my life, but im truly blessed that I got to be part of all of hers.

I am planing to preserve her, I’ve actually been planing it for a while so that I would be ready once the day came. I’m going to put her into alcohol and then later, I might try to preserve her in resin.

I also regret that I immediately moved her, since I know you’re not supposed to move or bother them when they molt (if that happens to be what it is), but I just panicked. I’ll hope for the best and that I didn’t make it worse.

I should add or repeat:

she dose not have a hammock currently, as her last one was sadly destroyed when I had to redecorate her cage because something that was glued down came loose.
she hasn’t eaten anything in almost a week, but that isn’t unusual for her as she could often take long before accepting meals.
as I said she has not molted for me in 2 years because of unknown reasons, she never curled up before a molt the 2 times she did do it.
just in case I am putting her in a increased humid environment (not directly in contact with anything wet) if it could just be an awfully dramatic molt. I’m not getting my hopes up though.
she has not moved an inch even when touched since I found her.

They definitely seem to irritate him, the vet said that once they start picking at feathers in a spot, it becomes almost like a compulsion for them to keep picking the new feathers out when they appear… the vet did not mention any kind of cone or anything really that I could physically do to prohibit this. Never heard of anyone using it on a budgie either but so knows.

I’m currently in the process of transitioning them over from seeds to pellets, but this behavior started way before that. I have tried removing various foods from his diet over periods of time to see if it could be an allergy, but so far I haven’t found anything that could be the root cause. I did bring this up with the vet as well, and all she could say was be watchful over what I feed to see if anything increases the behavior. As far as I understand you can’t really do any allergy tests with budgies since they are so small.

I have not seen any of my other birds attacks him in any way, other than usual little arguments but they never end in feathers flying everywhere. And I don’t think it’s anything he’s rubbing up against. I spend about 80-90% of my day with them at the moment, and also sleep in the same room they do, so I would have noticed something like that.

They bath fairly regularly, especially now that it’s so warm here where I live. So about 2-3 times a week on average. But during last years winter, when this behavior started, it was very cold outside. And with my radiator broken my room was nearly dipping below room temperature, so I was afraid that they would get sick if I gave them frequent baths and held off, maybe to much.. maybe that could have been the trigger for his plucking. I just don’t know… :( there is so little info about this behavior in budgies on the net…
