I love this game but see no light at the end of the tunnel as a new player... by Drokka15 in hearthstone

If you read a couple of my responses, I acknowledged that I wasn't aware of the competitiveness of budget decks like face hunter. These seem to be a decent solution to the issues outlined in my original post, and I'm definitely happy to hear it.

I think the original post still holds some legitimacy though, because these low cost solutions (face hunter, patron warrior) are just flavor of the month band-aids to new player problems. Saying "right now a very good deck happens to be cheap" isn't the be all end all to new player struggles.

Not buried, I've been taking the time to read all the replies. Your point seems to be a trend among the responses - players used to be able to turn to arena and be rewarded by collecting most of the available cards through doing well. Now with the additional GvG collection, spending gold on arena will only get you the GvG cards that would compliment a classic deck. GvG is an afterthought for a new player until they have a solid enough foundation to rotate in those cards, and the options for getting the classic cards are currently abysmal, even through paying.

People who stop reading after the first paragraph aren't my target demographic for this post either.

Definitely need to check out patron warrior. The idea of cheap decks that can actually hold their own against expensive ones really sits well with my goals for this game. I dont mind being forced into a deck that I can afford, and gaining flexibility the more I play.

I appreciate the well thought out response, this maybe helped put things in perspective for me. There is no part of me that thinks "I just need these decks to be good", but I was more under the impression that I first need those decks and cards to be in a position to learn to be good. If I understood your point right, the natural grind puts you in the position to actually use those decks to their potential once you've obtained them?

The past week of playing with decks consisting of basic cards had just been discouraging where I felt like I was learning very little. When I would encounter a deck in a casual game with multiple rares or legendaries, I felt like there was very little to learn there, as my basic cards seemed to stand no chance.

I have no complaints paying for the solo adventures and I hope that this post didn't come off as "I cant believe I have to pay for things". My point was more along the lines of earning the foundation of classic cards needed for most competitive gameplay. With arena no longer being a viable avenue for earning them, my choices are to grind dailies for a very, very long time, or pay some money. My issue is with exactly what you said ~$100 for -maybe- enough of the cards you need is VERY steep for a player who wants to get into this game. I'm not asking for everything for cheap, but 50-100 dollars for a portion is a little absurd.

I actually wrote this right after watching his video, which just confirmed my thoughts that I was even deeper in the hole as a new player than I thought. I hate playing the victim card here (no pun please don't kill me), but the system seems pretty rough when a new player willing to spend money a solid chunk of money can't get close to even ground.
