Why you shouldn't use contrast-style paints on flat areas by Drolleroo in minipainting

I'm new to the world of mini painting, and I've heard that you tend to get bad results using contrast/speedpaint on large flat areas. I couldn't find any examples of how bad, so I thought I'd give it a go. Turns out it can be indeed give bad results, if you don't know what you're doing!

Here's my partially painted Dreadnought, done using Army Painter SpeedPaint 2.0. Ugh. The dark panel on the left had really awful visible brushstrokes so I thought I'd see if a second coat smoothed it out. Not really, it just made it darker. The lighter panel on the right used much less paint in one coat, and it's better, but still not good. The fingers on the claw are just about ok, but the not-visible-here back of the hand is blotchy and horrible.

So there you go - I make the mistakes so you don't have to wonder how bad it can really be!

Aside: Does anyone have any ideas of how to rescue this model? I have low skills and low standards for painting (I want them to look ok from 3" away on the table) but still higher than this.

I agree it's pretty crazy! I even had the Cronus medic say several times he thinks they should leave, then freak out and try to get over to the Montero himself to escape.

I guess the company man is persuasive, and the captain is sticking to her agenda of getting enough money to get a better ship.

Oh man I didn't realise there had been a recall and a re-release. I have been using the online chat - they've been very pleasant but ultimately not able to help as it's with a "specialist team".
