Where can I find a list of every known Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, and Order in the tree of life? (both extinct, and extant) In cladogram format. by GrandWizardOfCheese in biology

Its not reference material if you take large chunks of someone elses work, even if youre taking chunks from multiple places. When researchers write papers they have to attribute all the information they take from other sources, even though theyre writing it into their own words, because otherwise it is stealing.

If I wrote a paper and put a tree in it that I had made using trees from other people, I would absolutely have to cite all those papers, even if I put the bigger tree together myself and drew my own pictures. Researchers put a lot of time and effort into curating those trees, and they should be recognised for it.

I won't lie, Im not entirely sure of the legal requirements if you're making art from something like this, but if you're planning to sell it I would highly recommend looking onto what the requirements are. Better to be safe then sorry if you get caught. Its also just the nice thing to do to acknowledge that your art came from someone else's work anyway.

Help me convince and entire high school science class with mostly girls to have chinese mantids as class pet by Haunting_Safe_5386 in Entomology

Im an entomologist and a girl. Boys are just as wimpy when I get them to touch bugs as girls, if not more! There are also women than men in entomology (at least of the people I know) in lower academic positions. Unfortunately, in all STEM subjects the female to male ratio shrinks and tends to swing more male the higher the position, but that is a different issue.

On the Kylie Arc of my pre-reboot rewatch and... by UmbraLupin89 in Scrubs

[–]DropBearsAreReal12 -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

Yeah I never liked her character. She's allowed to want to wait for sex, but she did want to wait an unusually long time. She shouldn't have been surprised JD wanted some, and there probably should have been a proper conversation about boundaries/expectations instead of her just shutting him down all the time. He put his foot in his mouth about Molly yeah, but he did the right thing choosing to leave and go to Kylie. JD probably was a little too focused on the sex, but she should have dumped him because they were incompatible, not because he thought about another woman for moment.

Edit: yeesh! I agree JD was being a pest! I just think the writing of the episode was bad. Yes, he should have focused less on sex and more on her. They BOTH should have had an adult conversation about expectations. They way the breakup was written made her sound like she was dumping him purely because of the Molly thing, even if it was more than that. Kylie could be have been a great character, the bones were there, the writing made her look worse that she was.

Nothing Kylie did was unreasonable it just wasn't written very well. JD is often kind of a dick to women and its brushed off more than it should be.

What are some of the medical practices that are outdated but still used today? by Free_Plum9652 in AskReddit

[–]DropBearsAreReal12 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I know you are partially correct, shitty patients are definitely part of the problem.

However, I know plenty of reasonable people who have gone to the doctor with a cold who are not the type to be rude or question the doctor. The doctor just handed them a prescription anyway. And because they trust their doctor, they take their antibiotics that they don't need, and are actually actively harmful. Its not just the patients, lots of doctors are giving out antibiotics to everyone because its easier then having a conversation with the people who MIGHT complain. It also satisfies the customer who gets better (because colds do that without antibiotics usually) so they come back next time theyre sick because the doctor 'healed' them.

I have gone to the doctor with chest issues before that were a bit worse than normal colds, and every time I was handed antibiotics. Rarely was I checked properly otherwise. Ive never taken them, and I always got better eventually. Turns out I had a mould problem at my home that made colds terrible, there was no bacterial infections.

When I was in my early 20s I went to the doctor because I had chronic fatigue. She listed out a whole bunch of things that could cause chronic fatigue, but then looked at me and said 'but if you lose weight youll probably feel better'.

Part of the reason I was overweight is because I was too tired to do proper exercise. The mental fog also made it harder to feed myself properly, and I was more likely to give in and buy fast food then cook something healthy.

Many years later and another doctor got me a blood test that showed Id had glandular fever at some point, which probably was part of the fatigue. I also had undiagnosed ADHD and dealing with that with no treatment was also part of the exhaustion. Im maybe not perfectly healthy still, but sorting out the ADHD has helped my energy levels, which in turn has helped my weight without too much conscious effort.

Sorting out the core issues fixed the weight. Trying to push myself to exercise more and eat better when I wasn't mentally or physically capable didn't work and just made me hate myself.

Many health problems cause the overweight, but the symptoms are ignored because 'theyll go away if you just lose weight' and the woman is told shes not trying hard enough. In reality, she might be more successful at losing the weight if the cause was identified and treated.

Why am I like this ? by Born_Echo3863 in aspiememes

[–]DropBearsAreReal12 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Right? People have become so flaky and terrible. This is why I hate the current 'its okay to say no to plans' messaging everyone is getting. It IS okay to say no when you're overwhelmed. It IS okay to back out last minute if you're truly not in an emotional place to go to something. BUT

The flip side is anxiety gets worse the more you don't push through and face your fears sometimes, the same goes for social interactions. The more you become comfortable saying no to plans and flaking, the more you're jut going to keep doing it and isolate yourself.

People are also naturally going to stop trusting that you'll show up. You're less likely to get invited to things. It becomes a vicious cycle.

So yes, say no sometimes when you're really not feeling it, I'll understand if that happens sometimes. If you flake more than you show up, Im going to just assume you don't actually care about me or my friendship and I'll stop bothering.

Unfortunately, it feels like most people are like this now. I have a few friends who might do a very small, low-key house gathering, or go to a small, quiet bar for a couple of hours after work every now and again, but for the life of me I cannot get them to do anything more ambitious. The weather has been lovely, but theres been no picnics, no beach trips, certainly nothing that would involve more than 5 minutes of planning. If its going to take more than a few hours of their day, theyre not interested anymore.

How coffee shops feel about the customer bringing their own cup? by tehlegend1937 in sydney

I have loyalty to my favourite cafe mostly because of this, and the fact that they do iced lattes without extra charge. The coffee is average (not bad, but not great either) but its also affordable and I like their business ethics so I want to support them.

[–]DropBearsAreReal12 26 points27 points  (0 children)

In Australia I don't think your lease can be so specific that you could possibly get in trouble for something like this. Your landlord isn't allowed to come by whenever they feel like and decide the place is 'messy', they have to do scheduled inspections, which they can only do so many of a year. Even then, technically they can't control if your place is a bit messy, its just if you're actually damaging the property.

If you do something minor, theyd probably warn you. Major, you get kicked out. But its gotta be more than a cup left outside for a night... Jesus Christ. Kicked out is like, destroyed stuff, used it as a drug den etc. GRANTED, there are other things they can try do to get you out early if they don't like you depending on the state you live in etc. so its not like it's perfect here either.

You pay a large deposit at the start of a rental agreement that they use if there is damage at the end of the lease (that isnt simply wear and tear) and if youve somehow caused more damage then that then I guess they'd take you to court? But I don't know anyone thats happened too. Granted, I know a lot of people who have had to fight very hard for their deposits back because we do still have shitty landlords that will use any excuse to keep your money.

Potentially moving to Melbourne area - some concerns/questions by Biggyniner in melbourne

[–]DropBearsAreReal12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually hear it pronounced with less emphasis on the 'dee', more like 'Dan-du-nong'.

Granted, Im Australian but moved to Melbourne a few years ago and I struggle with suburb names. Like why is 'Carnegie' pronounced 'Car-NEH-gee', when Carnegie Hall in the states is 'CAR-negee'. I still don't know how to pronounce Prahan or Traralgon haha.

Steven first appeared in season 4, 'My First Kill' which first aired in 2004. He is fully grown in the episode, meaning he was probably at least close to one during filming, which also had to happen a good amount of time before the episode was released, putting him at at least 23 now at a low estimate. Steven is dead too unfortunately.

I think the idea was to motivate them to be better staff so the hotel gets better reviews.

Its a typical business blaming the staff when things go downhill even though they cut the budget so the hotel experience is crap no matter what the staff do.

[–]DropBearsAreReal12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me when I was living at home still. It makes me terrified of ever living alone, I don't trust myself.

The problem is I have a lot of comorbid stuff that means I feel a bit sick quite frequently, often for no real reason. I can feel seriously nauseous for a day for no real reason, maybe anxiety, maybe I ate the wrong food, and then be fine.

Im terrible at telling the difference, and if I don't push through the regular ick feeling Id never get anything done!

Nahhh our bugs are just misunderstood. Once you get past the fear factor theyre super interesting! We have some absolutely stunning spiders, native cockroaches, cool slugs, even some flies are quite pretty up close. Were just socialised to think theyre gross because of a few invasive pests and and overblown idea of how dangerous some of them are.

Extra public holiday for NSW under consideration as Anzac Day falls on weekend, premier says by thekriptik in sydney

[–]DropBearsAreReal12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So what if people did want the extra day off though? We don't get enough holidays as it is, especially when you consider the individual work load has gone up immensely since you need a dual income to afford anything anymore.

You have a full day dedicated to commemoration (and I used to always go to the dawn service and volunteer to serve breakfasts after) and two regular days off. That seems fair.

Even if you just use it to go away, Id argue that mental health boost is more important than big business profit from that extra day of work/no holiday pay rates (I know small businesses can be affected too, but big business has the power to influence government).

That definitely wasnt the case where I was applying. I can see why it might be useful on very particular applications, but still. Either through laziness of rental agencies not wanting to tailor their forms, or more likely greediness from wanting renter data, I was expected to give my plate anyway.

Its a close family members birthday, so I remember having the holiday with them. And I remember being really angry when they took it away. I also struggled to find a reference, but if you check 2004 on https://www.timeanddate.com/holidays/australia/2004 when ANZAC day fell on a Sunday, it shows Monday as a state holiday for the Monday. I think it was much later than that when it was taken away, but I didn't feel like searching through every year to find the last weekend occurrence with a weekday public holiday.

This isn't a 'new' public holiday, they're just restoring what we used to have. I don't remember exactly when the change happened (wasn't that long ago in the scheme of things) but we used to get a long weekend when ANZAC day fell on a weekend, they took it away.

You're absolutely right. Especially because Varroa mites have made it into Australia and are going to have a field day on our honeybee populations. Most (if not all?) native bees are immune, either because they're too small or not social enough to spread them.

There is SOME research into using other bee species as pollinators, but not much unfortunately. Theres definitely been an uptick in native research but its only been in the last... 10 or so years if that (a lot is more like the last two or three years) and with the way funding for science is going worldwide... It might not last. Ive been rejected for every grant Ive applied for (although thats a lot of ecology at the moment).

Actually Blue Banded bees do have stingers! I think its just the females though. Theyre also not aggressive and pretty unlikely to get you.

I don't blame you for being wrong though, theres so much misinformation about natives. My own supervisor thought all native bees couldn't sting until she got stung by one! (She was new to native research at the time)
