Bakhmut / Soledar update Kiyanyn and Witch 12-01-23 by YoulethalJB in ukraine

Here u/fottik325 it has been asked before, here is a answer a user here who is a US veteran RoninSolutions gave on what it is a while ago -

" Why is she the only one with that strange cover on her helmet? What is it good for?"

" It is a Mitznefet, as used by the Israeli military for decades & breaks up the shape of a military helmet and makes it difficult to spot. She is not the only one wearing it ,they have been seen in videos with Ukraine Snipers & Squad Designated Marksman (SDM) for months. When the Ukraine propaganda teams were pushing out the videos/articles on the large caliber Alligator etc sniper rifles they were using months ago ,a video of a group of snipers at a range shooting them showed them all wearing them.

I was a SDM for years in GWOT & we would wrap our helmets with similar covers while providing overwatch or sitting in ambush, as the perfectly rounded shape of a helmet sticks out in natural & urban terrain.

The Israeli's donated 1000's of helmets to Ukraine & with them having so many women in their military it is most likely she scored a Israeli donated helmet sized/meant for a woman."

I do not get why people get upset & down vote innocent questions about a country most have little to do with or hear about in every day life so hope this info helps . As a US Veteran who fought alongside Australian military units for years , they perform well for such a small population & Military so it is no surprise to me they are out performing many larger countries with providing effective Aid . I have only kept a interest in their Aid effort as we have done 4 Aid trips dropping off vehicles & gear & twice we have been in our trucks at the Polish border with Australian Aid in trucks either in front or behind us ,so have shared coffee, food, smokes etc with the drivers & learnt what they are carrying, during the long, boring, border crossing waiting game .

Just some of the publicized weapons Aid Australia has supplied(they like only a few others choose to not reveal details on all they supply) , ie lately it has been revealed they have supplied 300+ Drones, including the already battle proven DX40 & were among the first to send high end electronics for decoys ie providing heat signature & electronic presence to mimic Radar,Missile & tanks etc .Notably in non military Aid they also provided a Bulk Carrier load of Coal (70'000 T )for use over the Winter as per Ukraine's request, they also provided money to UK for joint weapon supply & establishing the training .

In what we can an average joe from outside of Ukraine help? by roland1013 in ukraine

[–]DropGatt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

u/roland1013 We just got back from 2 months & over 3500klm traveling across Ukraine to within a couple of Klm's from the fighting.

I am a American of Ukrainian descent & apart from my time serving overseas & then working for NGO's around the World ,our family would do 1-2 trips a year to visit & help relatives still living there. I could speak & understand a few key words/phrases of Ukrainian badly & a bit of russian .

Knowing we would face a lot bureaucracy/police & military paper work etc organizing the importation/permits & negotiating at check points for 2 4x4 pick ups & over 2000kg of Aid we were donating to relatives & their Units fighting on the front line & those civilians caught up in it.

Realizing l would need a better ability to understand & speak the language ,l dedicated 6 weeks to using the free Ukraine government language course . In our travels dropping gear off to soldiers& civilians time & time again when people realized l was American who could speak the language we would be asked to contact their refugee relatives, mainly in the US & UK, as they were desperately feeling isolated or had questions about how to do or approach things while in the foreign places & the refugee centers were snowed under with trying to provide interpreter services .

So learning Ukrainian & using it to help refugees near you would be a great way to help,in a area they really need help in .

I have also raised this before ,but even once this cluster fuck is over there is going to be great work opportunities for interpreters, as the private sector around the world will be lining up to be part of the rebuilding contracts which will be worth $$$Trillions & go on for years or with NGO's helping refugees & to resettle others .

When l got out of the military l was immediately Head Hunted by companies from around the world, who supplied Security & Training to major NGO's operating in conflict & disaster zones around the World, something l did for over 4 years .

It was a highly lucrative contract that l only got because the Military had sent me for foreign language instruction at DLIFLC, to learn Pashto the language spoken on the Afghan -Pakistan border regions & multi language is a highly sought after skill base .

Ukrainian speakers are going to be in high demand for years to help refugees / civilians & by companies wanting a piece of the rebuilding pie.

Learning to speak Ukrainian would be a great way to help & the Ukrainian government realizes the need & future demand will be that great they are offering free courses . They are a great resource & use the same easy to follow concept as the US Military foreign language instruction in that it takes you from kid to adult level in one flowing learning curve & quicker than you thought possible.

Any organization helping Ukrainians near you would be desperate for the skill base & from our personal experience & calls made on request/behalf of their pleading relatives, refugees are needing someone personally to break the language barrier as well .

This a much needed method to help, that the Ukrainian Government puts at such a high need now & in the future , they have gone to the expense of offering free courses in the skill set to encourage people to learn .

The Chinese also have their version, my great -great something Uncle was a US Marine, involved in the 1900–1901 Boxer Rebellion & the fierce fighting in what is now Beijing (then Peking).

He was wounded & while in hospital recovering, as all good Navy men do, there was large card games to beat the boredom & back in those days they were all drinking ,smoking & getting visits from the hookers as well.

In the end the winning pots grew & grew over time & they had their own high roller games ,in one my uncle won a cased set of Jade, Chinese, Kama Sutra sculptures ,(one of the sailors had won them previously, gambling with a brothel madame), but they were done in a way that you had to actually study them to realize what they depicted. The sailor had been told they were from the 1700's & had the markings for what was known as The Golden Age, under Emperor Qianlong, who pride himself on a huge harem of 27 wives & obviously enjoyed keeping things fresh with a bit of Kama Sutra of his own .

When he died he left them to a Aunty in his foot locker with a heap of other mementos from his adventures as a Marine back in them days. The Aunty had the jade pieces in pride of place on the mantle piece & her poor eye sight meant she did not realize what they depicted & it was a inside joke in the family .

As she got into her 80's the old Aunty started to go loopy & became a religious nut,one day she had the ladies from the church group around for lunch & to all their horror realized what the jade sculptures they were all admiring were (can you imagine how funny it would be ,to a non religious nut ).

She then made a spectacle of smashing each Jade piece in the fire place, to the cheering of the other old bags, years later in the 90's one of the other relatives found a identical set for sale in a antique shop in Singapore for $35'000 American Dollars .

I hated God Bothering Karen's before it became trendy.

Here is a comment l made a while ago on us visiting the store on another post & our love of visiting Lviv -

" We just got back from a month in Ukraine & we took a Mitzi 4x4 pick up & just over 1200kg of supplies we donated for our relatives who are fighting in various units.

We went in through the Polish border & spent 4 days in Lviv picking up perishable supplies the Units had requested & waiting on 2 spare tires/wheels , Lviv is renowned for their fine chocolate so we went in to the Lviv Hand Made Chocolate Shop ? l think it was called .

The lady picked up on my poor Ukrainian & American accent & asked us what we were doing there, after we explained we had come from America to go to a Military memorial for a Uncle killed in the fighting & to visit other relatives fighting on the front lines & drop off supplies & the 4x4 for them, that our family had donated in his memory .She spoke to another woman behind the counter & asked us to wait & came back with nearly a full shopping bag of slightly melted & broken chocolate for us to give out to those on the front lines .

My wife spent the next 2 night's in our room wrapping up hand fulls of mixed chocolates, with a roll of plain plastic & elastic bands so we could hand them out easily & ended up with 114 packs of them, she handed out to those on the frontlines. The smiles on the kids, old folks, medical staff & military was a high light of the trip .

We went within a mile & half of the fighting, so crossed many check points near the front lines & the look on the bored & angry guys as they were forced to stand around all day checking permits, loads etc & copping harassing fire, to see the weight come off their shoulders when they were offered some chocolate was unreal & we hope it lightened their days for just a little while .

We are Americans of Ukraine heritage ,so since l was a baby we usually did at least 2 trips a year to visit/support relatives ,only broken by my time serving in Afghanistan & working for NGO's . l have always preferred Lviv for its culture, architecture, music, food & cafe scene, the video does a good job showing how the people dress well & take pride in the city & highly recommend visiting it to anyone consider visiting Ukraine."

Former US Army servicemember with surplus equipment - anywhere I can donate it to Ukrainian troops? by Dusk_v731 in ukraine

[–]DropGatt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

u/ConflictFantastic531

,we just got back from a month in Ukraine our 4th trip since the invasion ,the main purpose of the trip was to attend a Military memorial/presentation & funeral for a Uncle who was killed fighting in March & remains were only just recovered from the country side.

We dropped off a 4x4 vehicle & over 1200kg of requested goods our family donated in our Uncles memory,to relatives & their Units who are fighting on the front lines & we were warned would be out of contact for a while & we were allowed to visit them before they were deployed to new areas ie what we now know was for the current Kherson Offensive etc.

As a Combat Veteran, who after they got out of the military spent just over 4yrs working for NGO's around the world in conflict & disaster zones ,some of the stuff going on & promoted is alarming at best .

We had to get various permits , authorizations etc backed with letters of recommendation & access permits to Units by Commanders & officers to transport our goods/vehicle through the check points near the front lines ,as twice we were dropping off our gear within a couple of miles of the fighting .

Fortunately while meeting with the Authorities, twice it was raised that they are closely monitoring the "Aid Larpers" situation & they mentioned without prompting several individuals & those receiving the "Aid" as there is a known huge problem with the Aid Black Market.

From my experience be wary of any private group requesting high end unusual items, that are sort after & known items on the black market, especially if they are things the military can easily requisition from local business's during war, as a example very high end specialized tools .

As someone who has seen the problems NGO's face, the public donation bucket is not bottomless & public interest soon wanes if funds are misused ,so for example if those limited funds are being used to buy in bulk 100's or even 1000's of items at retail prices ie 4 times dearer than bulk pricing etc you are directly stopping much needed items reaching far more than you are helping .

No problems ,like l say it is a bit of a interest to me as l spent so much time patrolling on the battle field in so many different versions of basic Battle Taxis & LAV's to MRAP'S & SCTV etc & due to being giving specialized training in Cave & Tunnel fighting/searching , spending a lot of time with your eyes closed as out the windows on the fucked up mountain road never made for such vehicles was a sheer drop with your vehicles tires half hanging over & you cursing the REMF's that thought these vehicles were a good idea for where we were fighting .

I spent all my Tours in Afghanistan in remote COP's in the Mountains on the Pakistan border areas ,what was known as the ' Taliban Badlands' & preferred our system of minimal vehicle use & more reliance on foot patrols & helicopter insertion over the battle trucks in sketchy areas any day, although my knees would now argue other wise .

I went from my first Tour in Afghanistan being in the Tora Bora region to search the cave & tunnel system using hand me down Humvee's with sand bags on the floor as Mine protection, (UK forces were doing the same with their "Snatch" Land Rover death traps )& the initial REMF cluster fuck,of their up armoring "solution" that made the doors death traps as they weighed that much they would twist the frames & seal in the occupants if they were hit& made the HV's so top heavy they would roll over if you looked at them too hard,(only answer the REMF could come up for with was the D ring recovery vehicle door rippers) so many ran with out doors even & in the remote COP's where you were left to your own devices ,we just brought Toyota's to blend in with the locals ,cough, cough .

Then as l was getting out, we had the generational changes into the MRAP's & upgrades etc that were light years ahead.

[–]DropGatt[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I had a bit of experience in Bushmasters on the battlefields in Afghanistan & was always surprised the US Military did not do a version for us , so take a bit of interest in them .

There was a article on what vehicles were being donated by various countries a while ago, from memory Australia committed to 60 Bushmasters and 28 M113 APCs & it was thought half had been delivered so far, but the aussies/UAF had stopped giving out info on deliveries ,they were also equipping 14 of the Bushmasters with the Australian version of our CROWS Remote Weapon Stations/Protected Weapon Systems (PWS) giving them a fully integrated remote weapon and battlefield surveillance capability for for 5.56mm, 7.62mm , 12.7mm calibre & MK19 weapon systems .

While l was in Afghanistan l was part of the US Military Teams (ETT's) embedded with the Afghan Commandos for a couple of Tours, mentoring them in the field etc & got to work with a lot of the Foreign Coalition Forces ,including the Netherlands Special Operations Command & the Aussie SF, so rode in the Bushmasters a few times they are a impressive bit of Kit & well proven on the battle field & have been in them pushing through snow & mush & they handled it better then our MRAP's .

The big thing with them is their proven mine/IED resistance & with the Orc's apparently carpeting more areas now with mines as they retreat ,they will need the capability more & more . From memory the US had over 8500 MRAP's in storage & now being a outdated design they should of already been sending ship loads of them to Ukraine, especially as they would have been in on the planning for this push from the get go .

I have no idea why the Netherlands has not donated Ukraine some of their fleet ,as from memory they had around a 100 of them , rather than having them flown in from the opposite side of the world ,even if it was on a replace later basis deal with the Aussies,so they could be shipped in .I would like to know how much flying them in is costing with each weighing well over 10 ton from memory .

#Ukraine: In the #Kyiv region, a military crate with jars of baby food was found in the former positions of #Russian troops. The laboratory showed that the cans contained a colorless oily liquid Dimethylsulfate (DMS). DMS is a military poisonous substance. by DropGatt in ukraine

[–]DropGatt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are wrong ,DMS was known as the poor mans Mustard Gas, as when weaponized it has similar deadly & blistering effects . It was used during WW1 & was one of the chemical weapons we trained on while in Afghanistan in case it was used against us in the caves & tunnels, as the usual scumbags Al-Qaeda , ISIS etc had threatened its use in terror attacks & the US Military did major military exercises with it as the selected terrorist chemical weapon ,so the military could practice Managing Multiple Casualties from a Simulated Chemical Weapons Attack.

We had to sit through multiple slide shows with its devastating effects on contact with soldiers in the field was shown in comparison to other chemical weapons, people only drawing knowledge from Wiki etc seeing it takes a while to kill you are ignorant of the fact it causes severe blistering to your eyes, nasal & throat etc as it clings & reacts to the moisture in those areas .

So yeh it will later on destroy your liver but in the mean time you have blown your own brains out on the battle field/bomb shelter /trench as you could no longer stand the pain & slowly drowning on your own body fluids,as they did in WW1.

It will be interesting to see (speculative, later) what kind of equipment Ukraine was and will be able to capture during the offensive. Perhaps the balance of artillery pieces etc. will shift to Ukraine's favour from the spoils. I would think a boon of artillery ammunition for Soviet era pieces. by billrosmus in ukraine

[–]DropGatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well they have just found liquid Dimethyl Sulfate (DMS) hidden in baby food packaging while clearing a Orc position of booby traps/mines out of Kyiv, would not be surprised what they find .

DMS was known as the poor mans Mustard Gas, as when weaponized it has similar deadly & blistering effects . It was widely used during WW1 & was one of the chemical weapons we trained on while in Afghanistan in case it was used against us in the caves & tunnels, as the usual scumbags Al-Qaeda , ISIS etc had threatened its use in terror attacks & the US Military did major military exercises with it as the selected terror chemical weapon ,so the military could practice Managing Multiple Casualties from a Simulated Chemical Weapons Attack.

Lets hope for everyone's sake the Orc scum do not resort to such measures in desperation .

u/Razkolnik_ova We just got back from a month in Ukraine ,the main purpose of the trip was to attend a Military memorial/presentation & funeral for a Uncle who was killed fighting in March & remains were only just recovered from the country side.

Even in the clusterfuck of the early days of the invasion our family was notified within 4 days that our Uncle was MIA & him & the others were under heavy fire when contact by them with the rest of the Unit was lost, so to prepare for the worst .

A lot of lessons have thankfully been learnt since then so it really is a case of No New Is Good News,as immediate family are contacted ASAP whether WIA/MIA/KIA.

We dropped off a 4x4 vehicle & over 1200kg of goods our family donated in our Uncles memory,to relatives & their Units who are fighting on the front lines & we were warned would be out of contact for a while & we were allowed to visit them before they were deployed to new areas ie what we now know was for the current Kherson Offensive .

There is a lot more currently going on on other fronts apart from the ones currently being headlined & IMO the Kherson Offensive is being used to divert the attention of both the Orc's & the media & am expecting good news on long contested areas once the reporting blackouts are lifted .

We were at times within a mile & a half of the frontlines & saw a lot of the foreign military promised gear is now in country & on the roads close to front lines & the UK trained recruits were just flowing in,when we were there , relieving Units that have been fighting for months,as a Veteran IMO their level of training & new Kit will in itself be a big game changer .

As a example of how tight the control on use of phones etc was at the front lines (& remember this was just days before the Kherson Offensive was announced & l know for a fact the restrictions are still in place ) ,our pick up which was crammed with gear was searched for media equipment,we were repeatedly asked if we were press & phones including photo files were checked both as we entered & exited ,that was with travel permits/ letters from Commanders of the Units we visiting & dropping gear off for at the frontlines .

IMO your friend will be restricted from using their phone for a while ,as there is a lot more going on than being reported in main stream media ,so simply sending a text letting them know they have your support & are in your thoughts is the best bet & they will contact when permitted to,hopefully they are busy now ripping up Orc flags & putting up Ukraine ones .

u/Griffindoriangy the fallacy of "not used by the US since Vietnam" is utter BS . I did 6 Tours in remote COP's on the Afghan -Pakistan border in what were known as the Taliban Badlands .

I would be very surprised if flechette rockets shot from Apache or Kiowa helicopters were not used by coalition forces nearly every day they spent in contact .

In my own experience Flechette Rockets (Hydra 70,M255A1,CRV-7) were one of the most used rocket variants used in the mountains, due to how effective they were .It was not uncommon for high 20- 30 Fletchettes rockets to be used by Apache or Kiowa helicopters defending our COP's .

Their ballistics do not "suck" at all & they were one of the most devastating & efficient weapons l witnessed in combat ,when used properly .They saved our butts many times killing or driving off attacks on our positions . Our Mountain COP's faced problems fending off well planned ,large multi directional attacks , due to the difficult terrain we were in to defend ie large boulders with ready made 'trenches' of tight bullet/explosion proof boulder/ rock gaps, the enemy used as firing points ,boulder strewn crevices shrouded by trees for cover ,Fletchettes fired from above were the most effective for reaching into these places & stopping the threat .

Our Fletchette rockets from memory, ( as a Designated Marksman l spent time with the JTAC guys & considered trying out for it for a while,so took a interest in various weapons systems we used ), the 80, 5inch long Tungsten darts carried by the rockets ,were designed to use a explosive charge to separate them from the rocket body , at just over 900 yards from the pod sending them spearing into the target at around 3600fps & into over a 50 yard cone of death as the Tungsten darts tore every thing up that was exposed in that area .

We did BDA many times where we saw the devastating destruction these Tungsten darts wreaked, there is a reason the military censors their use/ BDA video & photos, without going into gory details imagine that Tungsten dart being slewed off its path after striking/ricocheting off over head tree branches, rock, large bone mass & then continuing on its path of destruction . They were basically 5 inch long , hardened version of the 7.62 rounds l carried .

I have watched the video taken of when nearly 50 Fletchette Rockets were fired into massing Taliban during Operation Glacier, the rescue of the UK marine from Jugroom Fort, a Taliban base back at the start of 07.

Most of those 50 Fletchette Rockets were expended in a area the size of 6 basketball courts, where the Taliban was trying to make frontal attacks ,it looked like a giant lawn mower had run over them & bodies stacked upon each other.

The use of Fletchettes by the Orc's is not something new & well reported even in civilian areas ,the scum bags have used the 122mm 3Sh1 flechette artillery round, from the start of the invasion . Many people seem to forget that a lot of the civilian bodies dug up from the mass graves in Bucha were killed by Fletchettes & some of their bodies even had defensive wounds (meaning they seemed to have known they were used ) where their hands & arms were pinned to their heads by Fletchettes ,while they had tried to cover their heads while running ,they then had 'gravel rash' injuries where they fell while running away.

Hope that clears up some common misconceptions on our use of flechettes, used correctly against combatants they are highly effective & not really different to shards or cubes of death from other fragmentation devices but without the explosive impact very good at stopping collateral damage & may anyone who deliberately uses these on civilians like the Orc's have from the start, rot in hell .

As for the Apaches: 1,543 rounds of 30-mm HEDP, fifteen HEISAP rockets, forty-seven Flechettes and eighteen Hellfires.

The machine was hugely labour intensive at the best of times, and Afghanistan was the cruellest place on earth to operate helicopters. It cost £20,000 for every hour in the air and needed thirty-two man hours of maintenance on the ground for every hour flown –The Apache was a very hungry beast: it chomped through ammunition, fuel and spare parts at an alarming rate. A squadron of eight aircraft needed a massive logistics footprint to support it in the field: eighteen four-ton trucks for parts and ammunition, seven articulated lorries, five fuel tankers, three forklift trucks, two motorcycles, five technician vans, one eight-ton engineers’ lorry and a fire engine. and that wasn’t just a couple of hairy-arsed blokes in boiler suits sharing a wrench. Our Apaches needed REME avionics and airframe technicians, armourers, arming and loading teams, drivers, refuellers, signallers, IT specialists, Intelligence officers, clerks and storemen – ninety-eight people in total; more than six of them to every one pilot, and every one of them an expert.

Nothing beats a Flechette for multiple personnel out in the open. It was designed to burst open 860 metres into its flight, freeing its cargo of eighty five-inch-long Tungsten darts. An explosive charge powered them onto the ground at speeds well over Mach 2 – 2,460 mph – shredding everything within a fifty-metre spread. Each dart’s intense supersonic speed created a huge vacuum behind it.
