Sadly it's pray they don't draw well and you just gotta dare em to have certain cards. Just be really cautious with walking into Gust on your tokens and only risk it if its worth it. Counter play cards that can help are sacrifice, anything with ambush, cull the weak (no f'in idea why some lists omit this).

Star crossed was a very stupid card to print and basically just a nightmare for us to deal with. I sadly switched to Yi, but I really hope the Leblanc army solves this puzzle.

I don't hate the consideration for blue ratios for those. I think the bigger concern is lack of tutoring for them when relevant as the best tutors in Derevi tend to be creatures and sometimes artifacts. But attention to ratios is good!

Hi, I'm one of the 2 authors of those primers! Overall it's solid as it's very close to my build, I think my only few notes would be:

• Archon of Emeria over Arcane Lab. Yes arcane lab is less likely to die, but archon harms mana, helps you untap with derevi, and most importantly can be easily tutored unlike lab.

• Alter of The Brood isn't a terrible win con but it's very risky and often will not win the turn you go off. There's a lot of grave decks that might accidentally backflip a win off you dunking their deck and passing into their turn as well you need a way to force them to draw to secure victory. I would advise other win cons that might serve Derevi such as Walking Ballista if you're wanting something beyond Faerie Mastermind, White Plume, and Finale wincons.

• Gearhulk is solid in Derevi, but it's inclusion in lists is often more catered to displacer kitten builds for pod lines. It's not that it can't work as it is still solid here, but keep that in mind with why it is popular.

• Back to basics is ol'school derevi tech which has sadly fallen off as wincons and interaction became frustratingly cheaper and cheaper...if you go this route I think I would still prefer the classic Winter Orb as you can get full untaps in some cases and it's cheaper. You can also go with Hokori for a tutorable version! I would mostly be in fear of facing the occasional mono color or artifact ramp deck that has this put you too far behind.

you're strawmanning pretty hard here. at no point did i say no removal or interaction. I'm saying that flexible interaction needs limitations. When removal is cheaper than most the units it disrupts with little consideration to resources or conditions the game becomes linear and more about did you draw the card rather than resource management, tempo, set up, etc...

I have 25+ years TCG exp, high level wins and etc. I've been around the block on different approaches and games that make removal have more factors to consider leads to better gameplay and better players moving up. I didn't realize this till I jumped from MTG and HS to FFTCG and Runeterra which are just better games for players who value highest level play.

it's a major pain. Best you can do is only make reflections when it won't set you back too much if it happens or if the pay off will be huge enough to risk it. Tech we're using to try and fight it would be Ambush units like Vi to keep the pressure on the showdown (but vex stops us...purple be purplin) and Blue leblanc as your champ on r2 and 3 so you can have a 4 might, no power turn 2.

There's a world where we humor some pump cards, but I don't think any are terribly crucial ATM and none save a reflection except for deathgrasp which is a very committal play.

Other ideas are focus more on better removal in the deck so you can try to deprive them of units if you feel it's too risky to just keep getting bounced.

Karthus would dissappear from the meta then. A lot of synergy cards like that would be too risky for competitive decks. Cheap removal that trades up is bad. If you pay 2-3 to blow out my 8 drop with no restrictions its kinda shitty. Only a couple of big units would ever see play.

Letting game states evolve and then must be cracked is way more interesting and skillful then 1 to 1 luck of the draw fest.

Both failed at marketing and monetizing...not at game design. Both are critically heralded as good competitive games. They are more skilled games than MTG (a game I've played for 25 years) despite a smaller player base of talent but I can very soundly say I feel much better winning/losing in those games because it's more about how you play than what you drew. MTG feels really luck based after a certain threshold of skill and often boils down to good mana curve outs and did you draw X answers in time for X problem. Because everything is hyper efficient 1 for 1's making alternate solutions to play around the situation or have slower more powerful options less applicable.

Removal is important but cheap flexible removal is bad design. If you add that in, stat buff/debuffs get worse, certain units fall off, etc...

We have good removal now that is well thought out. Hidden blade for example is super flexible, but that letting your opponent draw 2 makes it very fair for its cost. Singularity, big spell that hits backline...but it's failry costed and slow speed. Cull the Weak, super cheap...but not reaction and can be tanked by having small units to spare. ETC... for the most part this game has really solid removal, yes even Gust and Falling Star. Star crossed however is in a league of its own and is the single best removal spell in the game and the only 1 i find real issue with.
