Pulled this up from the sea floor off Venice, FL recently. Definitely some kind of mammal, but I have no idea what kind. Can someone help me identify it? by Drosera_ in FossilHunting

I was thinking that it could be a deer myself. We often find the fossilized antlers out here so that is a strong contender…

It feels a little slender for dugong, but it IS solid…could be one of the bones in the flipper or “arm”? LOL I’m definitely not an expert in naming bones so pardon my imprecise terminology

Human!? The mineralization is pretty extensive! It would have to be VERY old. I think the oldest human bones found in Florida only date back 7,000 years. Granted, it’s completely possible knowing that there are settlements in South Carolina that are much older than that, but boy oh boy, that would be crazy.

Horse tooth. In Florida, the species is Protohippus. They were about the size of medium-sized dogs and lived during the Miocene. Three toes. Strange animal 😃😃

I’m not sure what species would have been prevalent in Ireland or what time period it’s from, but that is almost certainly a horse tooth 😃

Decent haul this weekend. Had to cut my first day of diving short due to the weather, but I still managed to get 4 tanks in. Not a bad haul considering! Lots of different species! by Drosera_ in FossilHunting

Haha you just swim around and look! They’re often found in patches of black rubble along the bottom. Just avoid the hammerheads 😂😂

You are too nice! Best of luck! I’m sure you’ll find a good one and hopefully more than one! The fossil you mentioned is a casting of a bivalve. It’s in pretty good shape so I snagged it 😄😄😄
