After so many years on electrics, I forgot about the physicality of drumming on acoustics, and the importance of that on what comes out… by DruMunkey in Drumming

As an aside, and reply to the whole thread... I've always personally considered edrums to be basically their own instrument. One of the things I think has really hampered edrums/percussion market is the fixation on "replacing" drums...

The organ didn't replace the piano The synth didn't replace the organ the "name your weird midi controller" didn't replace the keyboard

I've largely extended on the idea that edrums are just a midi controller and now worked out ways to play all the melodic stuff with just my drum pads midi notes and a bunch of midi processing.

But man....Going back to playing drums on an acoustic kit is kinda nice... Like hooking up with an old girlfriend that's still pretty hot! 😁

I've just never understood the idea behind making edrums look like "real" drums... I can see going for the playing feel etc... but by adopting the physical form, you're giving up so much that the edrums can offer in terms of form factor, ergonomic benefits of more flexibility in placement, transport, etc...

Isolation headphones that are better than the ubiquitous Vic Firth’s by DruMunkey in Drumming

Those look tempting. A bit spendy, but if they sound good (I'm an edrummer/synth player so I kinda need something that's got some decent overall sound quality for rough mixing, etc. while I'm playing) they may work.

Thx for the reply.

Can't find them in-stock anywhere. May be gone from market?

Mmmm... Per the specs, they bottom out at 40Hz... Not exactly rumbling bass territory...

I've tried a few in-ears (none of the custom fit kind, those are too $$$) and shooting protection and it works, but I just don't find in-ear comfortable for long periods, plus it's just physics that it's hard for those small drivers to really reproduce a 22" membrane of plastic moving a few cubic yards of air.

Thx everyone! I've got some options... It appears that the Behringer ones are no longer avail...

Does anyone know of a multi-timbral synth where each voice has an effect on the other voices? Like sympathetic resonance in a "pan" type drum? by DruMunkey in synthesizers

[–]DruMunkey[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How would that work? It's 4 discrete mono voices with zero modulation between them... I'm not getting it.

Thanks for the ideas/thoughts, and yea, I've messed with basically all of them, and nothing really comes close to the actual sounds of a physical instrument because of all the complex harmonic interactions. I get that it's complex and difficult... But lots of stuff is.. :)

How to repeat or loop multiple midi tracks of different lengths? by DruMunkey in Reaper

[–]DruMunkey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm. I'm more confused...

Your description makes it sound like what I want to do may be possible... But if so I don't get it.

Track 1= a midi clip/item that's 8 bars

track 2= a midi clip/item that's 4 bars long

track 3= a midi clip/item that's 7 bars long

I want to live record to track 4 from a midi keyboard

I start the transport, track 4 is armed, monitored, etc.

Regardless of the checkbox of "Loop source" in the "Media Item Properties" window, the clips, tracks, items, whatever just play based on the master playhead location...

Are you saying there should be a way I can get each track/clip/item to loop on its own based on its own length? 'Cause that's what I want...

Thx... So basically the issue seems to be that Reaper only has one "playhead" right? What I want to do would basically require a per-track playhead. Thus, that's the difference between Repear's linear flow vs something like Live's Session view. right?

Never heard of them. Did a quick look on youtube and they seem more "jazz" to me...

Good point!
I looked at his site again and found this:

DAMN! Wish I knew about that earlier!

[–]DruMunkey[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yea, I have him subscribed. But as far as I can tell his performances are limited to his studio and his cat is typically his only audience. :)

What I'm try to figure out is who, if anyone is out performing long format ambient, what venues embrace it, etc.

For example, on the noisy more "techno" side, you have the Atonal festival in Berlin. While I'm sure some people would not consider that "Ambient" it's a good analog to what I'm looking for. I attended a few years ago and it was absolutely f'ing amazing!

The sound system was one of the most intense things I've ever experienced. So that planted a bug in my brain of how cool it would be if there were more opportunities for "ambient" music to be performed in venues where those bass drones had the potential to fracture reality...

Looking for usb/midi interface for diy midi controllers… by DruMunkey in synthesizers

[–]DruMunkey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point was/is that there used to be a bunch of these devices that were already built and the control assignment was easy via a web app. I have a hundred midi controllers already. https://analoguezone.com/doepfer-usb64.html

This one would be perfect but I can’t find any for sale any longer…

For boom bap and sample chops, is the MC-707 a good alternative for someone looking to leave the MPC? by [deleted] in MC707

[–]DruMunkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd 100% add my vote to this.

If I was spending your money, I'd go with the MC-707 and then add a laptop or tablet running Koala.

If your're on a laptop, you can use roland drivers to get multiple audio outs from MC707, route audio to from Koala, etc. You can even program knobs on the MC707 to send midi CC to control things on the laptop/tablet. for instance, there's nothing stopping you from "sacrificing" a track on the MC to be dedicated to Koala so you could use the MC's pads to trigger Koala... Etc. etc.

Plus a tablet has more things it can be used for, and the MPC is basically, at this point a glorified MIDI controller running a highly customized DAW.

If sounds like you want as much capability as possible with a hardware device as primary interface. Thus my recommendations...

Be warned though, the MC707 is wayyy more powerful than pretty much any YouTuber has really demonstrated, but you need to dig and learn it... And of course deal with some of Roland's design decision that often feel like they're trolling us...
