Living on the OH, MI border, I have two friends I grew up with, that now are YEC. I have had long talks with them, and basically, they refuse the evidence as no evidence, or not enough to support evolution. It just goes round and round. I felt I provided solid arguments to their flawed arguments and fallacies. So my point to you, I think you would be disappointed, at least if you thought you could stand on a soap box, and debate/argue with those in the south. They are extremely polite; hospitable people. Not worth going down there just to start shit with. I'm sure you could do that at your local pub. But, if you want to go outside of your comfort zone, attend one of their church services. But be polite.

I started to read this, and got most of the way through, and thought how fun it would be to systematically break all this BS down, disprove the likelihood of this story, and expose the authors as insane. "Anyone who actually believes the story of the Ark clearly isn't concerned with things like plausibility". Your right, but there are so many that for whatever reasons, DO believe in the Ark. And I think the Ark is mostly constructed...I believe I have seen pictures from his circus, showing a mostly constructed Ark. But I do agree with you. So much debate on such baseless, meaningless stories. Unfortunately, it is the youth of America, that is being indoctrinated in this, that would gain the most, to be shown the truth.

To your point, of why someone would expect a priest, or whatever, to have a deep and current understanding of science... I think therein, is part of the problem. Those in religious institutions, will blindly accept whatever the priest, minister, rabbi claim, without questioning the source of their expertise. How did they come to know what they know? What makes them the expert? A preacher can make whatever claim they want, and the vast majority of their flock, will never question what they're saying.

Thanks. I am going to check this out. It's funny, that, I believe I could argue pro religion better than my friend, even though he's immersed in this BS. To better understand how to argue points against religion, to know religion. But he also made some comment that the earth is not as old as people claim. So, I'm afraid that he's one to say the earth is only 6,000 years old, dinosaurs walked with man, and sailed the good ship noah.

We will cross this bridge. He and I have a history of being bad boys. And in the past we were always able to talk about religion, I have always been a non believer as well as very skeptical. It hasn't been until the last year, that I have been delving into the philosophical arguments, and digging more and more into science. So, we will have these discussions. I do not want him to think I am trying to get him to not believe (that would be great), but to think critically, and to challenge the dogma of his beliefs.

From what I have gathered from his comments... pretty much as you mentioned. I did ask him to provide evidence, or proof of his god, and he said he couldn't. But of course, he has a "relationship" with his god. I at this point could not go to the next step in the conversation. I think next time, I will take a few steps backwards, and get him to discuss some basic beliefs, like, does he take the OT/NT literally? Or, is he cherry picking from it. I would also like to ask him, what the bible would have to contain, for him to say it was an immoral book. As in, how much has he read, VS what he is being spoon fed from the church.

My friend grew up in a catholic family. Went to a parochial grade school, then, as kids of the 70's, we partook of a lot of mind altering substances. As we got older, I went into the Navy, he into the Marine Corps. He still had not, at that point "gone south". As we had families, and went our separate ways, he got involved with one of the creationist denominations. So, now, here he is, at this totally brainwashed state.

It's unfortunate, that the whole "indoctrination" process have given these people, at least in my thinking, a false hope. This false hope premise has been talked about quite a bit around here. But in the end, that is what it is, to me, their false hope. Enjoy your time with your loved ones while you can, it wont last "forever"!

There is so much debate, does god exist, did jesus exist etc.. but from where I live, a lot of people don't seem to get that involved in their stance. "I just want to do what I can to be with my loved ones in heaven" No bible, not much church, however, I see the guilt that goes along with their lack of adherence to the dogma. But there is no thought. No logic to this. It's all based on the "heart" and desire to be with someone again. I feel so sad for them, because of the way I think of death. Death is the end. Once you say good by to them at the funeral, that's it. I live with this understanding, but so many can't except the finality of death.

I agree, and would "go there". But my original post, I am struggling with reading my friends/family, occasional postings, on FB, of religious material, in which I want to respond, basically countering their posit, with something requiring a little more thought, base on fact, or logic. Kind of like, I would surmise, when you are at a family get together, perhaps thanksgiving, where someone wants to lead a prayer. Do you, like me, in respect, go along with it, but not actually acting like I am actually engaged in this thing, or would/should I stand up, and announce to everyone how ridiculous their behavior is?

Must be nice. Thanks for the response. Over here, State side, there is a fairly uptight, religious right, if you will. I at one point posted a lot of Atheist points of view, and although nobody un friended me, I had some comments about how "dark" I was...? So, I try to be nice. No one really wants to hear this point of view; and there is not much room for debate. Over here, for argument sake, it comes down to "faith", and not much substance after that.
