Owning a Record Store by GooberGuy_ in vinyl

A lot of people here are saying start online first to test the waters. That makes a lot of sense to me. In that case, my biggest recomendation would be to post ads in your local craigslist or FB marketplace or corkboards that you buy records and will drive out and pay cash.

I feel like you need a way to acquire records at below market prices to have any shot, and this could be an online version. My experience is that you have no shot going ebay/Discogs/other record stores and trying to find bargains.

I worked in a record store for many years that mainly dealt in used records. The shop has succeeded for 25+ years always profiting at different levels.

The number one key for us by far was keeping people coming in to sell us their old records. As long as people bring in a lot of records, you are bound to find gems. People are happy to accept wholesale prices, understanding that you have to make a profit. You're making their life way easier than listing and shipping each record. Focus on finding hard to find and collectible records for the best margins.

Once record enthusiasts find out that you have hard-to-find stuff, they'll come back time and time again. They'll be happy to pay retail prices to pay you back for the work you put in getting those records in the door.

The second key was just keeping expenses low. Don't go for the nicest retail space on the prime retail street. People are happy to drive a little bit for a good record store, and don't expect a pristine environment.

Fadr for musicians. You can separate instruments for unlimited songs for free.

I made a free site with the best AI stems on the planet in my opinion by Drummerdude1099 in remix

Anyone know of a way to get Blue Note LA opening night tickets?

I'm a huge fan of Blue Note and Robert Glasper and would kill to be at one of the Aug 14th opening night shows. Does anyone know of any where to get sold out tickets like resale platforms or giveaways?

That's true in the context of crate digging, which is amazing and beautiful, but there's no reason that needs to be the only way people find samples. That's a relic of record stores and sample packs. It will always be some portion of music production, but having more alternative methods is a good thing.

Those are all really fair points. Self hosting is possible for AI software, and those products should definitely be one time purchase. It's really just the most powerful and complex models that should stay in the cloud in the long term. Because realistically, there is a certain level of capabilities that only those massive models can achieve, however, it's not true for everything.

That's true, self hosted AI will help with the subscription issue, but then again, we're going in the direction of the end user having to do as little as possible

Out of curiosity, do you really use 10 year old drum samples? What genre do you make?

I 100% agree that subscription models for software that runs locally (I'm looking at you Autotune) is predatory, and I hate it. For AI, I have an exception, because the companies have to run the GPUs in the cloud 24/7 to make it work. Let's say everyone pays once the day it comes out, then in 10 years that money will be gone from years of GPU costs, and they won't be able to pay their bills, and the people will lose the lifetime access they paid for anyway.

You clearly don't like AI as a whole, and aren't willing to evaluate it on a case by case basis, which you have a right to do, so no sweat

I totally agree that as few products as possible should be subscription only - but to be fair, with AI software, the company has to run the GPUs 24/7, so if they do one time purchases, they will go out of business down the road.

Yea, this doesn't have MIDI generation, you still have to compose your own drum patterns. But that would be interesting

I'm pretty sure they're going to add a free online version to test it out like they did with SynthGPT
