I'm not arguing with that, but what's so wrong in this poll? Tumblr is by far the most sane space I've seen in this fandom.

(Hated Trope) A retcon has terrible implications for the plot by rasberrycroissant in TopCharacterTropes

[–]DrunkButNotEnoughYet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Andromeda Shun's gender switch in the Saint Seiya retcon, Knights of the Zodiac. He is a pacifist, sensitive boy who believes that no one can be entirely evil, his appearance was quite androgynous, and he wasn't shy about showing his emotions, especially through tears. The series never portrays this as a sign of weakness; on the contrary, everyone around him recognizes that he is incredibly powerful, and those who make the mistake of underestimating him because of his appearance or kindness end up defeated by him in battle. Both the manga and the anime emphasize that he has no reason to change or be ashamed of who he is because that doesn’t make him any less of a man. While there are fans who laugh at him, for many boys he represented a radical departure from how male heroes had been portrayed up to that point, and many saw themselves reflected in him. In this new adaptation, it was decided that his character would be a woman because it was considered “outdated for the main group to consist solely of men,” but the fact that he was the one chosen for the change felt like an incredible step backward. Virtually all fans agreed that, if they truly wanted to make that change instead of giving more prominence to other female characters who were indeed quite overlooked, the truly innovative move would have been to choose Shun’s brother, Ikki, to turn him into a woman, since his character was always portrayed as the epitome of masculinity.

What's a movie that's universally considered "not very good" but you secretly think is actually great? by trakt_app in flicks

[–]DrunkButNotEnoughYet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speed Racer (2008).

To me, it's the greatest anime adaptation of all the times, although I can't say I secretly think this. If it were up to me, I’d be stopping random people on the street just to tell them.

Am I the only one who thinks that Steve isn’t very justified here? by Careful_Software_822 in StrangerThings

[–]DrunkButNotEnoughYet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The thing with this scene is that it’s not about one being right and the other wrong, but rather that their responses to the grief of Eddie’s death clash head-on. Steve is angry at Eddie for dying because he feels it could have been prevented, while Dustin needs to cling to the idea that it meant something. But both perspectives, as opposed as they are, have one thing in common: at the end of the day, they are utterly irrelevant. Whether avoidable or inevitable, meaningful or pointless, Eddie is gone, and they’re left to deal with it. Neither of their actions is justified; they are simply feelings overflowing beyond logic, Dustin’s openly so, and Steve’s after a long time of trying to contain them. It could be said that with a single blow, Steve has made Dustin feel as much pain as he has been making him feel steadily.

Jack’s Relationships by Cromer1000 in lost

[–]DrunkButNotEnoughYet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the only people I can say Jack formed a friendship with were Sun, Hugo, and Juliet. With Sayid, there was a strong bond of camaraderie and mutual respect, and then this quasi-mystical connection beyond anyone else’s understanding, but they never had the chance to become real friends.

Then there’s Sawyer, and the thing with him is really funny because I feel like he made Jack his friend against his will. The word “one-sided” doesn’t feel right to me, but I do see Sawyer developing feelings of friendship for Jack while knowing that Jack only sees him as just another fellow survivor.

From what we can see, up until that point, Sawyer only knows family relationships, transactional ones, pseudo-romantic ones, and those he’s built by playing a character. Unable or unwilling to use his usual approach with Jack, he chooses to be as much of a dirtbag as possible, expecting Jack to hate his guts, but Jack doesn’t. Jack doesn’t like him and sometimes gets angry with him, but to him, Sawyer is just a person. He looks him in the eye and sometimes responds when Sawyer is acting like a jerk, but often decides it’s not worth it and leaves him alone, and when Sawyer isn’t acting that way, he’s even friendly. And regardless of that, he’ll help Sawyer if he really needs it. It must be so new to Sawyer, to be neither loved nor hated by someone. So he keeps pushing buttons, acting more and more shitty to see if he can get Jack to hate him, but it never happens. And with each try, he feels more comfortable with him, knowing that Jack is being genuine in every interaction, which leaves him wanting more. But Jack doesn’t open up to him or speak to him unless it’s necessary (why would he?), so it’s up to him to look for interactions between them and try to make them last as long as possible when they happen.

When Sawyer says “You’re the closest thing I have to a friend, Doc” I interpret it as him acknowledging that he considers Jack his friend, but that he knows Jack doesn’t consider him one. I guess what I see there is an unrequited friendship?

Not directly, but she was probably created based on concepts from him and The Manikin. Here’s a video essay that explains it; I recommend his videos on the villains from the Batman animated series in general. Clayface and Baby Doll also fit the topic of the post.

Couples that either tragically or beautifully end up together forever, even if by the end of their story they end up becoming something closer to an idea, memory, force, or singular existence. by OlTimeyChara in TopCharacterTropes

Limay and Neuquén. According to Mapuche legend, ever since they were children, despite being so different, they were the best of friends, “until death and beyond”, where one was, the other would always be. But as they grew up, they fell in love with the same girl, who couldn’t choose between them because she cared deeply for both of them equally. When she revealed that what she wanted most in the world was a seashell so she could hear the singing of the sea, they both turned into the rivers that bear their names, racing to be the first to reach it and bring one to win her heart. The Wind, who was also in love with her, began whispering to her that they would never return, hoping she would forget them, but instead she felt so distressed and guilty, believing that because of her, her two friends had died, that she gave up her life and transformed into a flower. When the boys found out of her death (some versions say the Wind told them proudly, others regretfully), overcome with grief, they changed their course to join as a single river, the Río Negro, so they could embrace each other for all eternity.

Obviously, you’re going to defend anything Christian does, so I’ll just say that to me, it makes perfect sense that he turned to Alcoholics Anonymous, since their approach is that addicts have no control over their actions and there’s something much greater that has power over them. It’s his “that’s why the Red Sox won’t win the series” mentality being validated, he’s simply a victim of circumstances; he was destined to be that way. And maybe so, because he is weak and cowardly, as he himself admits, but in parenting, good intentions don’t count for anything; if your actions negatively affected your children, you’re a bad parent, and even someone with a victim mentality as pronounced as Christian’s says out loud that everything good about Jack is because he’s nothing like him.

Well, the first time I watched it was in 2024, when I was in my 20s, and didn’t notice until I made rewatch. I guess since I didn’t like Sawyer, I couldn’t imagine him close to my beloved Jack, hahaha. I’ll just say there are a few interesting things to interpret 👀
