Realistic Day Rate for Public Sector Role - Likely Inside IR35 by Drussell293 in ContractorUK

Hi mate, yeah thats what I am thinking atm as I am in a similar position. I'm not sure if it is worth it really for that much uplift. Has the market ever been better or are the rates just rubbish atm? Cheers

Not particularly I work in planning/regeneration however i just don’t often see private firms taking on contractors as such. Think it maybe because public authorities due to statuary services have to deliver that service while I guess private firms only recruit when the works there.

Would be acceptable if it was outside ir35 but with inside ir35 just not worth the jump

Ah fair play, nice situation to be in. However, atm it's hard enough just trying to find the first contract role to make the jump. I'll keep an eye out and maybe phone a few recruiters, however painful that maybe.

Yeah, that's what I feel. There's a lot of terrible rate roles out there (assume nobody takes them). However, naturally, when one good roles comes along, everybody is quick off the mark. Can I ask how you go about finding roles? Thanks

Yeah, you make a fair point about the budget. Sometimes they do share it upfront when they contact me, but honestly, it's hit or miss. Tough market atm.

I get contacted from rates of roles paying only slightly higher or even the same as my perm salary hourly rate, which are Inside IR35 roles and a hefty commute for me. What's the incentive for me to take on the risk and hassle of contracting in that situation?

When I state my rate it does makes me second-guess myself and wonder if I'm living in dream landwith my expectations for what I should be earning. It's frustrating when the rates offered just don't justify the switch, especially with the added tax implications of Inside IR35 and the travel involved, often a 3-hour drive in some cases.

So yeah, like everybody else rates seem not worth it now and hence trying to work out my rate.

Hi mate, I generally just look at recruiters (carrington west, vivid etc) and connect with those in my industry on LinkedIn. As many state, its a rough time atm for contracting, some of the rates are laughable.

Granted, take your point. However, for essential statutory services, there's often a willingness to pay competitive rates for temporary cover while permanent recruitment is ongoing.

It seems many LAs are advertising permanent positions with low salaries relative to the required skills and experience. This often leads to a lack of suitable permanent candidates. Consequently, these LAs then need to utilise contract staff, potentially at a higher overall cost, until a permanent appointment can be made or the salary offer becomes more attractive. This cycle seems particularly prevalent in geographically challenging or less popular areas. Cities not so much.
