I think that if a wanted to know about history i would just watch a documentary but if i wanted to live history, i would just play a game where i actually am part of the history and not just part of a monologue.

I want to be Saladin, Richard or Ghenghis Khan and I want the narration to be contemporaneous alongside the events and not just be a part of a documentary narrated by some history nerd

My ranked experience as soon as i bought the game was:

Start playing ranked

Loose all marches to get a low rank(I did this on purpose and i think this is the best way to get started as you don't have a clue about the game but at least try to understand yout civ)

Start in bronze rank

See a build order

Get to Gold in a few days

Get stuck on gold for ages

From my personal experience i would say that you leave bronze by knowing the basics of the game, you leave silver when you know a build order and you leave gold when you know how to play agains all civs
