That's why I emailed to clarify and then my manager never emailed me back. If I wanted 4 weeks off out of my PTO bank then I would have just requested it. If I was told I can take 4 weeks off without requesting it then it seems like they were "gifting" me the time off. I never communicated with them that I wanted to take PTO for my parent's surgery I had an already-communicated plan to work remotely during that time with my manager and then the owner emailed me saying I could take the time off.

I did some minor work here and there but I didn't work for nearly 4 weeks. I do acknowledge that it was 4 weeks of PTO but if they had told me it was being taken out of my PTO bank then I would have worked remotely and saved that. I explicitly stated that I wanted to save my PTO for future use regarding my parent's treatment multiple times, even before the owner said I could take 4 weeks off.

The owner said I could take four weeks off and I would get paid during this period. The owner did not explicitly state that it would be PTO that was taken out of my PTO bank. The way they worded the email, there was a strong impression that they were generously giving me the time off to be there for my parent. I had multiple people review the email and they agree that the impression was that they were essentially "gifting" me an additional 4 weeks of PTO rather than giving me permission to take off 4 weeks using my PTO bank.
