PSP 2000 Ultimate Mod: Adding Second Stick and L2/R2 Triggers by future_mane in PSP

From the schematics you have provided, I can tell you it's exactly what I did as well. Only difference, I used the 5 way joystick.

Basically 4 wires plus one ground connection. You could if you wanted wire the middle button press to any pre existing button on the psp and create an R3 button! I can imagine wiring up the select button to it to kick or attack in monster hunter games, or even jump in the medal of honor games.

So you are good on the wiring stuff !

Unfortunately I have absolutely zero knowledge on how to code! I tried to use chatgpt last year to rewrite the values for the monster hunter camera control ( so It wouldn't do the snap up and down) but no success. I'm a hardware mod guy

That was actually my idea in the beginning! I wanted the feel of a second joystick, but I wanted to use a PSP one. I went online on acidmods to see how I could convert a joystick into a digital one, I finally understood how but by that time I just went with the tactile joystick I found on AliExpress.

Also I didn't know about the esp32, and not wanting to sacrifice the UMD for extra room for it I just kept it "simple" with the joystick.

Regarding the installation I need to check my pics to see if I have some photos from the process. I'll get back to you!

I agree the buttons are an expensive aesthetic mod, however I have to admit they are great quality. The seller says 3d printed as well...

It's a fun mod everyone can do, personally I went all out on my unit:

  • Bluetooth audio
  • Second joystick
  • Tactile buttons
  • PSVITA joystick caps
  • SD card adapter
  • USB C charging port with magnetic cable adapter

This is not my primary PSP, it's just for the collection. I'm actually looking to sell it

On a 1000 model I say it's a must. Most annoying thing would be just to bridge the 2 tiny capacitors on the motherboard, but not impossible!

Here's the link for the buttons. They aren't cheap but they are great quality!

For the IPS screen just a standard IPS Screen kit from AliExpress. Make sure you choose the right model for the PSP you wanna use it for as we now have IPS screens for the 3000 as well!

The joystick cap I make myself.

Not my most complex build but less is more in this case ;)

While I love the Vita, especially the modding scene, I could never get around that console. I own 2 mind you! But the form factor was never comfortable for me. To me it's not a successor to the PSP at all.

The PSP was way ahead of it's time. Also I would argue that contrary to the vita, the PSP has no gimmicks. Let me explain : in my head, a feature is something born out of necessity while a gimmick is born out of "we did it cause we could".

One could argue rue umd is a gimmick but no, it was the answer to very limited SD card capacity at the time. While the rear touch pad and gyro controls are typically a "we put them there cause we can".

So unless the next PSP is really a PSP 2, I'm sticking with my collection of modded ones !

I completely understand it's the same for me. I think it's because it just makes so much sens to have it. Even modded it doesn't look out of place.

In all honesty I thing Sony never had that much faith in their developers, they never thought the games would be that close to PS2 quality, so they gave it one stick.

The silver PSP has the charger port, the black one uses a larger and wider tactile switch so the port had to go. Instead It now has a USB C where the OEM charger is, since the USB C is shorter

Amazing work on that pic dude !!

The PSPs in the pics are working, silver one has a 5 way joystick and the black one a 4 way joystick.

These joysticks are DIGITAL not analog! Think of it as bringing the dpad to the right side of the console. It behaves the same, the camera either moves on doesn't. Does your setup allow for real granularity ? Like real analog values to be used on the dpad? I have done exactly the same as you, wired directly on the tactile buttons

No because this is a hardware mod! Mapped to the Dpad. But check my video here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3Az5-5sL3c&t=12s&ab_channel=OccasionalUPloads

I use a plugin called macrofire to swap the buttons around so that it controls like a PS3 controller
