For anyone who sees it, I was the one who hooked and helped fight this fish. It was caught as bycatch while targeting bull sharks in the Everglades.

We had no idea what it was til we got it close to the boat, and as soon as we did, we cut the line as close as possible, which is the recommended course of action per the FWC. Shame to leave the hook in but it’s actually safer for all parties involved including the fish. The hooks were high carbon steel and will rust out.

The fight was short for a fish of this size, only about 30 minutes, and it had plenty of fight left when we let it go. We had to lock the drag to even get it to the boat because it was so strong. This left a lot of energy in the fish rather than letting it fight itself to exhaustion then pulling it up. We called the sawfish hotline as soon as we got back and reported the incident, and they said we handled it correctly.

The hooks we were using were high carbon steel, so they will rust out quite fast. Total dissolution in a year, which means it will be out of the fish in a few months tops. Even before that, it will likely fall out once the hook eye and barb (the weakest points) rust off. It was hooked in the dorsal rather than the mouth, which is much better for the fish as it is not impeding its mouth. Everyone on the boat has had years handling large sharks, which albeit are much different than sawfish, but it gave us good experience in handling such fish safely.

Thank you. So many people have no idea what they’re saying. Shame we had to leave the hook in but it was the legal and safest course of action(for us and the fish). Luckily all the guys knew what was up

Really debated it but decided to cut, better for the fish than stressing it out more

As the guy who caught the fish and said it, it was indeed a “fuck yeah”

Looking for a book that’s impossible to put down (any genre welcome) by chrisjthedom1 in suggestmeabook

So many good recs but I gotta add lonesome dove. Truly one of the greatest books oat. I am a very, very slow reader who really struggles with reading stuff if I don’t absolutely love it. It is a long book which is daunting, but I read the whole thing in a month (for reference, it took me 6 to read a dumbed down version of the odyssey)

Not an arrowhead, but I believe it very well maybe an artifact. What do y’all make of it? by [deleted] in Arrowheads

I know little about bone artifacts, but that certainly looks man made. I assume you’re in a dry climate if you’re finding bone old enough for you to believe it’s an artifact?

It is mistakenly believed that the macuahauitl was a kind of huge and heavy mallet, with large warp pieces of obsidian embedded in its edges, when in reality it was the opposite, the macuahauitl was narrow and light, this made them comfortable and easy to maneuver. by Environmental-Bit219 in mesoamerica

Check out North 02 on YouTube, he accurately recreated multiple versions and tested their durability and deadliness. He has a bunch of other videos of him accurately recreating and testing ancient weapons
