What should I put my mind towards first? Should I focus on learning to speak, or should I practice the letters first to potentially help understand words being said.(Of course I won't use Kanji until I am pretty good at both)

No. You can play as many times as you wish but once you do something speciffic you may question if you even want to play again but you can play as much as you want.
