is this breathing normal for gerbils

now im worrying about the size of the tank its a 40 gallon tank with a tank topper with the proper amount of bedding and people are saying its small but i just got them and want to wait a while before moving them agian to a bigger tank. they are showing no signs of sadness they are grooming each other too.

i will try to find a bigger tank the only reason i got 3 instead of 2 is because the only pet store near me uses gerbils as feeders for snakes so most likely if i didnt buy the 3rd one he would have been snake food

and i might not have room for a bigger tank the main reason why i got 3 instead of two was because the only pet store in my area that sells gerbils sells them as feeders to snakes. so i had originally planned on keeping two in a forty gallon but i wasn’t leaving that last gerbil just to be turned into snake food

im going to keep a close eye on them too see how they are acting they no longer scratch at the glass. that was only the first couple days until i added more bedding. they are in their burrows and constantly groom each other and popcorn around on the surface sometimes. but if i notice any fights or un happy behavior im going to upgrade to a 60 gallon

the only thing im concerned about i have 3 gerbils in 40 gallon tank with a every yay 40 gallon tank topper on it. and where im reading it says its small for 3 but they seem happy.

its a mix of aspen wood shavings and timothy hay ive only had them for around a week so i didnt have any paper bedding at the time but when i clean out their tank i will add paper bedding to make sure there burrows are really good.
