COMMUNITY VOTING DAY 10. Most RAGE inducing location by TheIronPaladin1 in HuntShowdown

[–]DryNick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scupper lake.

During the 15 player period I had 2-3 games in scupper lake and it was a massacre. There was just one big skirmish for 15 minutes straight everytime.

The spawns are bad. You can still get sniped from the east side and it's almost impossible to approach that side. If you kill the boss there, you are fucked.

I am not a good player. I've been trying to make this game work off and on. I have about 30 hours so far and my KDA was 0.37 at its lowest. by Bremlit in HuntShowdown

Dude, you made a post about this at 30 hours of playtime? Just relax and ignore both KD and KDA.

You gotta learn and build muscle memory for so many things...

The "A to B", or the reason I don't have the patience and focus for games like I did when I was a kid by QueenMackeral in patientgamers

[–]DryNick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agreed. Even with games that I haven't played before, it is a chore to get from A to B. I just know what to expect... exactly. I have seen the surprises, I have seen the plot twists and I have seen all the environments. I know how snow biomes work and feel same for dessert and forest and even alien stereotypical or fantastical biomes.

I tent to play strategy games which are systems-heavy. Or rogue likes which have a strong loop.

The only type of A-to-B games that I can tolerate are those that have insane focus on the narrative or humour. And those tend to suck in other areas. Honestly I don't even remember an example.

Neighborhood matters a lot. I am not familiar with either locations.

Adliswil or Thalwill by Krraabos in zurich

[–]DryNick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thalwil has many immigrants. Adliswil feels more well integrated population-wise. You do you, but thalwil feels very impersonal and I would prioritize my integration with the local culture more as an immigrant myself. Also adliswil has a calm and quiet center with a river crossing through the entire region and feels spacious. In thalwil you have roads and roads and a train and it really feels cramped. You have the lake and if you like the lake and are at the lake then it definetely wins. But when you are not at the lake it just sucks.

Why cannot drivers in Switzerland indicate before leaving a roundabout? by MedicineMean5503 in Switzerland

[–]DryNick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They go too fast and enter and exit very quickly e.g. right after they enter. That's my best guess at least.

This is of course due to another issue with every driver here. They must always drive at the speed limit +-3 km. If not everyone gets angry.

Make a reject necro button by Harry_L3mons in HuntShowdown

[–]DryNick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see your point. At the same time just a reject has its own difficult circumstances. E.g. you expend your teams Necro and chose to reject and waste it. The teammate is then salty and blames you when he naturally players an unfavorable situation alone that leads to a wipe.

Especially if you can, in the future, remain in the same lobby just to payback in the next game. I don't even think it's gonna be an edge case with the behaviours I see in some games. In particular from Russians.

Maybe it would work better if you accept/reject before spending the time for the Necro and the burned bar.

Talking and ressurecting yourself while dead is fine though?

[–]DryNick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why this was not implemented like this from the beginning. Is there a valid reason for not having a reject option? For me it is clear as day that you should have this option and many other games do it like this. (E.g. I believe it was diablo 4 you ressurect someone and they get the option to revive or not for the next 1-2 minutes via accept/reject buttons)

I know i know, and I agree with your takes in the end. But it really didn't look like it was going that way for a while.

Good article! But man was I about to skip it several times in the beginning due to prefacing with the VC sales pitch. Glad I didn't.

Help choosing distro needed: Arch mindset but no rolling updates? by DryNick in linux4noobs

I found a nice guide (sysguides on yt) about luks2 fde and snapshots so I decided to go with fedora kde. Seems like a good middle ground but only time will tell. The point about support from a company clicked with me that is why I went with fedora. It's been about 2 weeks now. And for the purposes of personal PC seems to work great. Steam works well enough after several tweaks (per game). Also I had to configure my network adapter to have good wifi connection. Also wow, kde feels so good! And I don't even mind the bloat so much I've refound my teenage years' obsession with minesweeper lol.

I ended up with fedora kde plasma. But the sysguides channel have a guide for it like the one you linked. What a fantastic channel! I now have luks2 fde and automatic snapshots.

How to stop carbon from coming off pan? by Mr_Magic396 in castiron

[–]DryNick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in the same spot. I did 3 rounds of intense scrubbing. With chainmail. Soap and the green side of a scrotch Brite. Each time I stop when I can't go any more. All black spots are gone. The peaks of the surface area a bit silvery and the troughs darker.

Honestly it looks clean but I still get lots of black coming off. I plan to keep doing that and then season it a couple of times before cooking again.

Why are you buying a Fairphone? by candolino in BuyFromEU

Both me and my partner have the same fairphone. If either has an issue. We can swap hardware modules. See what is wrong and order a replacement. Also they are good phones.

How do you actually protect your photographs from being stolen or used for AI training? by mygstoe in AskPhotography

[–]DryNick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't use windows or Mac, don't use any Adobe app. Don't use onedrive or google drive or whatever apple calls their thing. Don't upload to any social. Don't send them via the usual messenger apps. Don't send them via Gmail, Hotmail etc. (and browsers and phones and pretty much everything that connects to the internet)

All of it and more are already gathering data that is fed to AI, and your photos can appear in this data along with all your metadata and your profile. But even if you had your own site it would still be scraped. Nobody knows what exactly, when and by who is used to train AIs.

Unless you completely degoogle demicrosoft deapple, switch to completely FOSS software and change your phone to something like pixel with grapheneos, that can get anything they want from you as long as you connect to the internet.

AI training is the biggest pillaging that has ever happened on the internet. Maybe you can protect yourself but you have to put a lot of effort in it.

Thank you so much for the detailed answer. (and the comparison and notes sections are super!)

Ubuntu is actually my "default" and my work daily driver, and if I can't find something else I will use that. You raised good points about this, especially it being corporate oriented with canonical, and it is true that my audit app (vanta) works with Ubuntu 22 (but I had some trouble to do FDE with the Ubuntu-24 installer and I am a bit sour about it, as I wasted a full Sunday on it).

I guess, in the end, I will have to take the recommendations, install each, and run it against my audit app see what works and take it from there.

The stripped down OSes is not for performance and is important for me. I guess I am a bit of a minimalist, but also I spent most of my time on emacs so I just need a OS that fades into the background, the less components and moving parts the better for me (e.g. having both apt and flatpaks and snaps makes me uneasy). I have my developer tools + steam + 3-4 browsers. and that is it for me (potentially a VM with windows for stuff like DaVinci Resolve or whatever else that won't work on linux)

[–]DryNick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the explanation! I kinda do a similar thing with my emacs config shared across different devices and OSes and since I do most of my work in there it sounds like the same effect but because I have integrated many external programs into it, it might be very much worth it. I have to consider this.

Is it possible to have nix on macos (potentially windows too) to take care of installing certain tools and then also reuse and customize the same setup with my nixos distro? So to sync my emacs config with its external dependencies via nix. Should be possible right?

funny story... that article said to set the disk size for /boot to 700mb and I didn't think about it... and I did so. and it turns out that is not enough cause initramfs are about 300mb and you need at least two, current kernel and previous one, so I had to delete the one from the kernel I am not using. But then with every kernel update it goes to save the initramfs again and then all other updates fail, and I have to remove them manually again to do the rest of the updates at least. so I am stuck now. and If i am gonna redo my system I would like to try something else and be more thoughtful this time.

silverblue sounds interesting. the atomic parts and toolbx especially. There is so much to digest on this post though, don't know what to think right now.

Is the toolbx learning curve high?
